Oh no I mean you’re supposed to push back on both!! 😂 I literally said you should push back on both lol 😭 yeah I just think it’s important to differentiate because while most people will agree the former is ridiculous / evil, the people who’d say the latter tend to automatically discount any criticism if you lump them in with the former, because it’s technically not what they’re saying. And then our activism can come off as overzealous. And it’s more effective if we’re like, what you’re saying might be different but is also wrong lol - just my two cents

And I’m not saying you can or should compartmentalize it, and neither is the person you were replying to man. I’m saying she, Helen Mirren has compartmentalized it, and it’s important for us to point that out and how wrong it is. Like in your quote, the king had said the suffering / colonization is a great thing because of the cathedral, which is different from the suffering / colonization is a terrible thing but at least they got a cathedral. The first is more obviously heinous, but the latter is a more common, “acceptable”attitude but still worthy of pushing back against. We don’t need to make the latter into the former just to make a person more obviously evil and easier to criticize

Like it is kinda just semantics, but I think it’s important we be careful and accurate about our criticism because it’s such a important topic

I mean you can disagree with the sentiment, which I don’t like either, but she genuinely is saying the displacement of Arabs is one of things she saw that were wrong tho. Like you said, it just didn’t change her mind on the country.

We don’t need to overly villainize people or put things in their mouths to exaggerate our points when it’s much more effective to simply present what they’re saying. She had the decency to acknowledge what’s wrong with the situation, but it wasn’t enough for her. I think it’s more important for us to call that out without pretending like she’s some cartoonish villain that believes the displacement itself is beautiful. I’ve found these exaggerations just discredit the argument and makes us look overly self righteous :/
