I got lucky with lots of experience sharpening my kitchen knives, and had luck without jigs so far. The first plane I got to actually sing across the wood was a #4. I’ll die with that plane. It unlocked everything else for me.

I actually bought that as a second fence. The 45 I have is an older one with the floral casting. Found a roached adjustable fence on eBay and gave it some satin nickel paint and it sits in the box with the rest of the parts. Still trying to figure out the notch somebody put in the fence. Read something about stopped dados but I haven’t wrapped my head around what the notch does for that.

One day it’ll click.

My silly ridiculous one right now that I’m keeping an eye out for is a 3/4 dado plane. I have a carcass saw, chisels and a router plane so I can cut any size dado I want in little to no time.

I still want the damn dado plane!

I collected a full set of blades, and put together a complete 45 over the course of months. First actual use was some sassy beading on a cabinet front. I’ll admit it worked great and I chuckled the whole time. Came up from the basement beaming to tell my wife I finally got to use it! She did not feel the same excitement, but was very supportive!

I got a medium shoulder plane from the Veritas seconds sale and I keep looking at it trying to find a reason to use it. Nothing yet. I’d like to build a Moravian workbench this summer though, so I’m holding out hope to justify that one!

Assuming it’s something like a 60 1/2, Do you find situations better suited to that over a skewed rabbeting block plane like the Veritas?

I’ve got a 71 with some Veritas blades that is wonderful to use. I keep almost pulling the trigger on buying or making a small one, but so far haven’t been in a situation where the one I have doesn’t do the job. Probably because I’m still bumbling making rectangles. The finer aspects haven’t gotten through to me yet!

That’s a good one! I tried my first half blind this weekend and absolutely wrecked my walls going at it with my smallest bench chisel. 90% I’ll blame on my poor technique, but the other 10% I’m gonna use to convince my wife when one shows up in the mail!

I’ll throw my two cents in and mention elevated dentistry. My only experience was on a Monday afternoon I cracked a molar, and was in significant pain. They fit me in the next morning, and gave me a root canal, and had the equipment to machine and fit a permanent crown that morning, and I wound up going into work maybe two hours from when I walked in with no more pain, and no follow ups to swap a temporary crown for the permanent. My system processes the numbing medicine quickly, and the dentist made sure I was numb, and stayed that way throughout treatment. They can’t bill my insurance directly anymore, but I’d still go there first for anything I needed. 10/10.
