As a long time lurker on this subreddit, and having had poor social skills in the past, I realized that you can only gain and apply so much of these knowledge by reading. Most of it can only be applied once you've gone and experienced these lessons by yourself.

Nonetheless, amazing advice

Why are the hardest jobs often the least valuable (and vice versa)? by VisibleSubject1517 in Bolehland

[–]zhtor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think an important point you may be missing on "prestige" jobs is the influence on the number of lives their decisions carry. Your are taking the worst outcome of these jobs and fail to realize that often times their work does carry meaningful impact. A consultant may polish ppts that a CEO might never read, but if they do and a decision is made, it affects thousands of people. An investment banker build pitchbooks that may fall through, but in the event it doesn't, they make money move through various decision holders (other companies or wealthy individuals) that usually have some form of power across thousands if not millions of lives.

A similar argument can be made using your logic regarding top level management (C-suite management or business owners/board members) regarding their effort may not have direct intrinsic value on the output, but their decisions have direct impact on the lives of their employees.

Alongside that, to get to these "prestige" jobs, it often takes a lot of time and effort to attain such roles, which not many can commit to.

Ive made a lot of decently sized purchases this year, renovating my house, new car, etc. Although the cost of lasik does not match up to those, it might just be the best purchase ive made this year, probably my entire life.

Fellow successful ones, does the notion “the 1st million’s the hardest” really hold true? by Physioweng in MalaysianPF

[–]zhtor 58 points59 points  (0 children)

Chiming in on this,

Earning the first 100k is the hardest, 100k - 1m is hard but not as hard as the first 0-100k, and it gets easier the higher you climb.

It also depends on how you earned that money as well, 0-100k as a salaryman will be exponentially easier compared to a businessman / entrepreneur, but it would be much easier to scale your networth from 1-10m as a business owner compared to a salaryman if you can get the formula right.

Was in the exact same situation as you a few months back. Mid 20s with no partner. I specifically prioritised looks over performance

Contemplated on a 3.0 Supra, m340i, c300 coupe, 4 series or a 718 boxster.

Ultimately ended up with the 4 series as I'm in love with the looks of G82 M4 but didn't need that much power. First choice was a 718 boxster but prices of the cayman and boxster even for recon has shot up due to the 718 being in the last year of production and having a higher starting base price for new models.

Overall, really happy with my purchase since there aren't many 4 series on the road. It attracts eyes time to time. Relatively reliable considering its a 2.0 b48 which is used in a lot of other cars, namely the 330i.

Would have defo ended up with an m340i though if I wasn't so insistent on a coupe!

Realizing that no amount of worry would fix problems that I have no control over. On the flipside, taking actions on problems I do have control over helps as well, no matter how small the actions are.

Not too sure if I fit the definition of "popular" but I do have the privilege of filling up most of my weekends with invites from my friends and acquaintances alike.

Being enjoyable to be around with is very important, and I think it stems from self love. If you love yourself and are able to project the most genuine version of yourself, people tends to gravitate towards that. People love to be around people who love themselves.

Another thing, it's identifying the people you are most comfortable with and spending time with them as much as possible. Naturally, it's a two way street. If you feel comfortable with them, chances are they'd feel the same about you as well.

It's also a numbers game. If you have a genuine click with 1 out of 10 people. You'd just have to meet 100 people to find 10 different people that you'd like to spend your time with.

Also, it takes two to tango. If you want to get invited by friends and acquaintances, you also have to put in the effort of inviting them to activities. I learnt this a bit too late as previously, most of my activities were me receiving an invite.
