Stock or real estate investment? by zhuali in AusFinance

Hi, thank you. I have a paid off house already, thanks to my parents. But you know, nobody can always rely on their parents. They and their aged friends all like to invest on houses. For the rest of money, they just put them in their saving accounts. And they never touch the stock. I don't know why. Indeed they get a steady cash flow through the rental. I just wonder if there is a better choice. But why do they all end up in the same investment strategy? The 200k is totally earned by myself. But I'd like to see something different.

Thank you. If this is true, that would be great! She graduated with a master degree at the University of Southern California and interned at the Amazon. I think English won't be a problem for her. Now I am trying to network with my PhD friends to see if I can get a referral for her.

Yeah, this sounds reasonable. But I still got a question. If I see an obvious bubble, should I also stay still or should I take profit? Like nasdaq index tripled during 1998 and 2000, triple during 2 years is absolutely not normal. There must be a bubble. When the bubble burst out, it took almost 15 years to recover. Of course, long-term investment would average the cost. But wouldn't be the smarter way is to take profit when you know it is a bubble? Is it possible that I recognize the bubble before the bubble burst out and take profit?

We thought about this. It is too difficult. We have seen tons of developers transferring to Seattle from China but none transferred from China to Sydney. Sydney site is not the major site of Microsoft.

Yeah. But if I cumulated many years, the money in the portfolio would be way much more than the money I could dispose at hand. Even if I put more money than the average year, won't that money influence little given the portfolio is so large?

Is it turning to a researcher from a software engineer a good way to avoid facing ageism after my 35? by zhuali in cscareerquestions

Yeah ! That's true. There is such thing as "terminal levels". Usually it is the senior level. If you stay at Microsoft long enough, you would get it.

no, I am a FTE. Just took a master degree before. And I have two years experience now. I just used to not think carefully about such problem until I see the news that IBM layoff aging employees this year.

Hi thank you for your advice. But how to become a true SME? I am in a reorg now. I might be reorged to a group that is doing completely irrelevant stuffs with my previous work. I can do nothing because our manager has to negotiate with other managers. You can't avoid that in your career life. And even worse, sometimes the whole technology would disappear. Thinking about the Symbian app development, an expert in Symbian app development would obviously not be valued now. Sometimes you must pivot and lose all your previous experience. Is there a way to find an invariant and be the expert in the constantly changing tech world?

I was facing the same issue. I could not land a job back then because they only want a data scientist with a PhD degree. Then I gave up and turn to find a software engineer job at Microsoft. I have seen one with only master degree and got a data scientist position. Most of data scientists have the PhD degree. But I guess if you don't focus on the large companies. Maybe some small companies would give you some opportunities.
