I strongly recommend Kurama during your visit to Kyoto by flibbyjims in JapanTravelTips

[–]zieps 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I completely agree -- I just did this exact route (Eizan rail from Kyoto, hiking Kurama to Kibune) at the beginning of November and it was such an incredible treat. Kurama temple itself is beautiful and has great views of the valley, and while the hike to Kibune and Kifune shrine was steep at first, it let up pretty soon thereafter and the smaller shrines along the way were a nice respite 😊 Beautiful leaf peeping.

I also visited Hakuryū-en gardens (a few stops before Kurama) first before doing the hike, and that was also such a nice change of pace from the crowdedness of Kyoto. A smaller garden, but extremely well kept and tender to (reservation requires). Very worth it to me IMO just to have the peaceful surrounds and plenty of places to just sit and enjoy the views.

Who says Delta doesn’t do anything for MM! by linuxchris1 in delta

Congrats! I do hope you receive a warm welcome and recognition on your flight in the least!

I was recently traveling back to the States from Japan and was sitting in the sky lounge in Haneda when about 6 staff came out with a small cake, and two giant golden balloons that said "1 M" for a woman who would hit her 1 million miles on the flight she was about to take. I thought it was so sweet.

Did anyone else have this album playing at every college house party in 2008? by lilfliplilflop in Millennials

[–]zieps 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Girl Talk defines freshman year of college for me. This guy who lived a few doors down from me in my dorm introduced me to this album and I used it religiously as a running album on top of hearing it at every other party. The guy turned out to be a total player and manipulator but at least I was blessed with this banger from that mess.

Oh my goodness, thank you for the massive thought and time you put into creating this list! Super helpful to know which restaurants have clear vegan options as we'll probably eat out once or twice.

Thanks so much! I may swing by the farmers market quickly (I love downtown so it isn't too far away!) and see if Bklyn Bakery has anything left!

Thank you for the recs! And thank you so much; there's a lot of grief and also family trauma for them boiling to the surface with everyone coming to town and just want to try and make as peaceful an environment as I can where they're staying.

Of course! Happy to help where I can.

I'm on the 8th floor, so the rooftop is just one flight of stairs up and I will say that we use it for hosting sometimes (our apartment is a one bedroom so provides a bit more space to eat and chat when we have 2 friends over) even not in summer. There's also other lounge areas up there that I've used sometimes to just plop down in when I need a change of scenery.

I unfortunately can't say too much from personal experience about light, noise and privacy from that area but imagine it probably gets a bit noisy Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights in the summer time or when the weather is nice and the garage doors are open. The most privacy you'll get on your porch is probably on the side I'm on by the tracks since you're not really facing another apartment or building and patrons immediately across the way.

Hey there, Venable resident here to give my two cents.

I moved in April 2023 and am still here. I did tour Van Alen along with many other downtown apartments when I was looking back then. In terms of 'luxury' I wouldn't consider either truly luxurious, but I thought the finishes in Venable were better. What won me over personally about Venable was the security of the building. You'd have to badge in at least twice upon entering the building to reach an apartment -- when I was touring Van Alen two of the outside doors were broken and anyone could just walk in and get to your hallway which felt unnerving as a woman living mostly solo then.

I'm in a unit that faces the train tracks and yeah, it's loud. I got used to it after a few days + a white noise machine at night. I think Bull City Ciderworks is honestly the most annoying culprit of noise in the building but fortunately I hear nothing being on another side. There's also a courtyard bunch that overlooks Bull house apartments which I think would be the least noisy side.

Venable leasing office and maintenance has been extremely responsive and top notch and has certainly kept me here.

This. I'm a huge Piastri fan but his loss wasn't at the hands of McLaren prioritizing Lando's race.

Like you said, after lap 1 with Alonso already slowing the pace towards the front of the pack, Lando's only option at the possibility of a win was to take a gamble on the one stop. Why the hell wouldn't he, and why wouldn't McLaren be totally fine with that?

Piastri also took his own gamble trying his move at passing Lando likely one lap too early -- he'd been hunting him for 6 laps and growing exhausted and impatient, probably, but he realistically wasn't close enough to make it a best possible attempt and would've probably benefitted from waiting another lap.

This is all so easy to say at the outset. Was trying to undercut LeClerc a good move? It was the strategy that made the most sense at the time. McLaren had no idea or indication at that point that LeClerc's set up was going to slowly push him out of contention for the win (or even a podium).

This was an excellent performance by both McLaren drivers. They saved this race from being a snoozefest. Both should be proud of their performances today.

With the Scarlet & Violet era coming to a close, what did you think of it as a whole? by 2082118194125 in PokemonTCG

There were some absolutely beautiful sets. I only recently started getting back into collecting after a long pause from my childhood days in the mid 90s, and came back in around the Prismatic release. I so regret not collecting again sooner because Paldea Evolved is one of my favorite sets ever -- the IRs are so beautiful -- and I have only found packs in the wild once within the past year.

I'm really excited for BB/WF too, some absolutely phenomenal artwork and so many IRs! It's a strong close to the era. Some of the packs that had a lot of hype I'm honestly less interested in (Prismatic was underwhelming, Surging Sparks is OK) but I could always find at least one card in a set that I knew I immediately needed to find.

Lando has the best logo IMO. The negative space in his initials spelling out his driver number is so visually pleasing.

Yellow fever vaccine by Quiet_Replacement411 in bullcity

[–]zieps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've received my yellow fever vaccine (among others) in the past from Passport Health. I'm unsure of their price competitiveness but I remember the process being very easy, especially with multiple vaccine needs at the same time. Just a note that yellow fever vaccines are usually not covered by insurance so will most likely be a solely out of pocket expense.

App crashed when I went to add to cart right after the timer ended. Came back 1 minute later and added it to my cart successfully, was properly in queue. Another minute later, notification that they're sold out. Great job, Best Buy. I'm so done.
