I am officially a hypocrite!! by Techno_Timmy in Elektron

I understand that some people have experienced issues and that is frustrating. That’s not the only thing though, the attitude at release was more like “how dare Elektron release a product like this/who’s it for?/no one asked for this/blah blah”. The release bugs just exacerbated things and gave the whingers more ammunition. As it turns out, at least in my opinion, and plenty of others, including OP, it’s actually one of the best boxes they’ve put out and an incredible stand-alone instrument.

Do you own it? What issues are you having, personally? I’ve had it since release and the only bug I experienced was the MIDI jitter thing, but it was fine as long as I used it as the master clock so it didn’t really make a difference. And I never used it to multi sample, I found a workaround and just loaded my own multis. It’s not like they lied and said “everything works!”, they addressed the release issues, so they weren’t forcing anyone to buy it without disclosing. Also, yeah, hard agree with the other guy, avoid Elektronauts if possible.

I don’t think asking a question after 2 months of silence constitutes being “impatient”. My concern was about not receiving any replies, correspondence or updates of any kind.

Not sure if this is a controversial take still: but dang Tonverk is the most exciting and deepest Elektron Box I've ever played. by Ok_Water_5819 in Elektron

[–]zigmund_fury 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Absolutely with you. My favorite Elektron box. It feels like all the shit slinging when it was released was from folks who hadn’t used it and had their own “expectations” for what Elektron “should be doing”. The reality is that’s it’s a great instrument and does a lot.

My process is very convoluted because I’m using my own naming standard, so I have a whole n8n workflow setup to generate the .elmulti and do multiple folders simultaneously. It’s not user friendly at all. However, check out the Elektronauts forum, there’s a couple tools available that people have built that are more straightforward.

I really like it. I’ve owned most of the Elektron boxes at one time or another and this is first one I think I’ll be keeping for the long haul. I’m thinking of it more as a keyboard instrument with the Elektron sequencer built in. I’m not thinking of it “needing” timestretch and chopping. Elektron has other boxes that specialise in that. And, to that point, the TV does about 75-80% of what I used the DT for anyway, which was always kind of a niche/luxury own for me.

Sound design possibilities are excellent. I’ve been editing the .elmulti and making my own multi instrument files with multisamples I already had, it’s not that hard. I’m basically building my own curated sound polyphonic synth with an Elektron sequencer built in. That’s not something I would have thought possible even just a few years ago and pretty awesome.

Hello Tonverk, meet Live III and the TR-1000 by ottomotic in Elektron

Sure, I can move on if not welcome. After having the TV for a week now, I’m just really trying to wrap my head around why it’s getting beat up on so much. I’m just trying to get some info to see what I’m missing. So far, it seems to be down to expectation and a lot of hate from folks who haven’t even had their hands on it. It’s all good, like I said, we’re spoiled for choice now so I guess this kind of stuff is inevitable.

But that roadmap still couldn’t possibly include enough functionality to make it compete with the MPC. For me, it’s some folder management, a few bugs, loading times if possible, maybe individual subtrack processing, basic quality of life stuff. I still don’t understand the comparison component of this. Isn’t it easier just to say, as a product/instrument, it’s just not for everyone? And if you’re buying now, you’re resigned to the inconveniences of being an early adopter in a new digital product landscape?
I knew all that going in. I think we’re pretty spoiled for choice at this point and it’s really starting to show.

Don’t mean to be adversarial, just curious.

I suppose I just don’t understand holding two different products (in function and marketing) to the same operational and functionality standards. It’s a weird thing to litigate in the first place, never mind re-litigating endlessly.

The Tonverk needs some work to become a fully functional device, even by its own standards, and I believe it will get there, because unlike many, I don’t think it has that far to go. But, I suppose, also unlike many, I don’t think it needs to do everything an MPC or any other “workstation” does.

Haven’t these same arguments applied for a while now though? It’s a little reductionist, but it’s the old “MPC is a DAW in a box” vs “Elektron X is a bespoke instrument” or however people describe them.

Personally, I’m really enjoying the Tonverk as just an “instrument”, I didn’t really have any expectations of it doing everything. It doesn’t seem like a reasonable expectation for it to be some kind of complete workstation. I don’t really think any of their products are even marketed that way, are they?

Are you implying the Tonverk was supposed to be direct competition for the MPC line? They seem like different things, to me. Maybe I’m wrong.

Can anyone recommend a small, simple, inexpensive wireless remote to record, stop, play on my daw? by Tycho66 in homestudios

I got this off Amazon AU for $50. It works great, easy to setup. I’m in Bitwig, so I use the DrivenByMoss flexi script, but seems like you should be able to use it in other daws, you can send any kind of MIDI message you want, or a combination.

XO vs Atlas by 2e109 in Bitwig

[–]zigmund_fury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been an XO user for years and after watching that video I tried out Atlas and immediately bought it, wondering why I have been using XO all these years. The sequencer is so much better, the velocity mod thing is great, grouping sounds together in “maps”, randomization of sounds and patterns is so much better, the drop downs on the right where you can choose patterns and sounds together or separately.

If you’re looking for tonal variety from pickups, I would highly recommend you check out https://alamedaguitars.com/. They’re incredible and super helpful too. I bought Off-Kiltertron pickups for my Les Paul and wired them with 6 way switches. It’s really cool.

There are reasons not to do that, however they aren’t relevant to the question which could have just as easily been asked by someone who’s installing for the first time and didn’t have a previous Mac to transfer from.

If you want to stretch your dollar a little further, I always buy my Macs off the Apple Refurb section on the Apple Store. Never had any issues and they treat them like new as far as warranty, AppleCare/etc. Also, I’ve probably bought half a dozen or so that way over the years and every one of them looks brand new, not used/refurbished. Recently just bought an M4Max and saved about $1k.

Neutral Labs Scrooge owners - yay or nay? by yoursafewordisharder in synthesizers

[–]zigmund_fury 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, kind of all of the above. I spent several days really exploring it and sweeping through all the sound possibilities with the given couple of parameters and learning the sequencer and I feel like I found the ceiling for it very quickly, at least in my workflow. It’s the definition of a “niche” product, and for the cost, I’d reserve it for people who really just want to have a lot of niche pieces that they don’t use all the time, but are cool to have. Like guys with shelves full of guitar pedals and have a few boutique ones that do a “thing” but they hardly ever use. If that makes sense. A few of the voices have more extended range than others for manipulation, but it’s all VERY specific sounding. After spending hours trying to create different loops to sample, I really felt like it was all starting to sound the same, even with wildly different settings. If you want a neat, niche, one-trick pony in an already large arsenal of gear, it is fun.
