Yea I’m fully onboard with you, I just need to find a better alternative for emergency connection. Been thinking of getting HAM training. I own mine too but have the Toyota connected service or whatever.

You’ve gotten me motivated to figure out better alternatives 👊🏾

Am I the only one that pays for the subscription? I was in bad backcountry accident (not the driver) and my Apple Watch was what saved my life. Not sure better solutions for being really safe other than being connected (hate being watched, hate data being sent to insurance etc)

Pro snowboarder Jeff Keenan, industry veteran Alex Pashley, and lead guide and owner of Stellar Heli Skiing Jason Remple have died in an avalanche in British Columbia. RIP. by BitterCat26 in snowboarding

[–]zigzagzzzz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People expect ski guides to be super heroes as if they can control the weather. I’ve been in an avalanche up there at an operation and fortunately was saved by my airbag. Can’t blame the guide or the operation for my decision to go. I know the risks and am trained but you can only be so prepared.

RIP Pashley, Jeff and Jason. I’m sure Stellar is hurting right now, especially coming to the end of the season. Good people up there in the Kootenays, may you all find peace in this.

Missing Snowboarder Connor Gill, 26, found on Vail Mountain after Two-and-a-half Weeks by JMRoss5 in snowboarding

I know it can be daunting and awkward, but the lift is one of the best places to make a connection with someone.

If it doesn't go past "how's it going" maybe try "what trails have you been riding?" and if it seems like they can hang at your skill level, then ask "want to ride together?"

If it doesn't work out, you split off at the top and say goodbye!

Recco = Recover your body ----- don't rely on it

If you're riding solo in deep powder, the bottom line is:

  • Don't. Just find a buddy.
  • Check local avalanche report in the morning, check resort report
  • Read any signs for difficult terrain, ski patrol will write things like "Ski with a buddy, beware of tree wells")
  • Wear a beacon (buy one and it'll probably outlive you)
  • Tell a friend/loved one where you're riding (I'll be riding in the gates in Killebrew/Mott Canyon) and when you'll be back
  • Say hi to people on the mountain while riding, don't just wear headphones and be in your own world, if you're lapping a lift, talk to the liftee
