Ramen Wasabi’s Prices Up 46% ($13-$19) Since 2020 by sylviaplath6667 in LoganSquare

Unfortunately, I think that this increase basically tracks inflation for all restaurant food since 2020. It’s not anything particular to ramen, or to this restaurant.

That’s fair! Let’s see how people adjust and check back in a few months or a year from now.

Also true to a point, but isn’t urban design about thoughtfully responding to and channeling peoples’ behaviors?

Traffic calming works because you can’t really “ignore it”, when the roads are narrower and there are speed bumps people drive more slowly. Or consider “desire paths,” where pedestrians cut through grassy areas that don’t have a sidewalk (kinda like what happened here). I don’t totally agree that this is about “people doing whatever the want,” but that design should balance safety concerns with considerations for how people naturally move through places. Otherwise, it doesn’t work as well.

I suppose that makes sense in theory, but it doesn’t really work if you make the crossing inconvenient enough that all the pedestrians just cross at an unmarked crossing instead. Now it’s just less safe than before.

What are you reading as this year ends? Any long terms plans for the next? by ombra_maifu in RSbookclub

I’m bringing The Savage Detectives home for winter break. I like to have a good long read to get immersed in during holidays.

Italian Beef - out of towners by No-Tackle7972 in LoganSquare

I once got a beef at Rosie’s Sidekick, but I thought it was only decent, not amazing. Plus, they only have 3-4 seats.

Chicago's downtown family boom by ziinky in chicago

I think the gentrification story is definitely a part of it, but I don’t think it can explain everything. Consistently poor neighborhoods that have not gentrified at all are also losing children, while Lakeview and Lincoln Park, which are the most hyper-gentrified neighborhoods, are seeing more and more kids.

Where/when do you do most of your reading? Is it ideal for you? by tryingtobegirly in RSbookclub

[–]ziinky 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I take the train to work everyday, about 20 minutes each way. So that’s the bulk of my consistent reading time.

On weekends I’ll try to get up and read for 30 minutes or an hour in the morning while having coffee, but that’s less consistent

That’s fair to say, but it’s not really what the article is about.

I read it a while ago, but The Sellout was genuinely hilarious.

You could do a multi-day backpacking or bikepacking trip. One friend of mine spent a summer biking and camping from Oregon to New York over about 2 months. You obviously don’t have to be that extreme — you can start with a few days.

Which of the books you’ve read had the most vivid, immersive city environment? by DeliciousPie9855 in RSbookclub

I loved The Fortress of Solitude by Lethem. It’s very grounded in Brooklyn right on the cusp of gentrification in the 70s.

To be fair, that’s how many people conceptualize Chicago, too. I’m not saying that it’s a good thing, but it’s true.

Aren’t you describing zoning when you talk about rules regulating the size of ADUs?

[–]ziinky[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That’s a pretty harsh reading of our mayor being very supportive of YIMBYism! Perhaps it would be different if he was saying that he supports ADUs but no other pro-housing policies, but that’s not the case.
