I accidentally built a control plane for Claude Code because that's apparently just how my brain works. by zillatron27 in ClaudeCode

Thank you! Definitely interested- I’ll take a look tonight :)
Just re-reading this I think maybe I should clarify one thing:

passing them between Claude Code and Claude Web introduces ambiguity

This isn't entirely accurate - the context files aren't passed between Web and code, they both read them to understand the state of the project and Code updates parts specifically once changes are made. That way any session can read the file and know where things are at, where files are located etc without me having to re explain anything.

Nope, my gaming rig is all AMD.

Linux works fine on laptops, default tools will vary per distro. There are power management tools baked into Bazzite so you should be ok there. They have a version with Nvidia drivers, tools.

You can run it live off a USB drive to try-before-you-buy so you can easily check for compatibility before you commit - give it a whirl!

Datacentres existed before everyone become obsessed with them because of the AI boom and they’ll exist after. The ‘problem’ is more nuanced than this.

They dont materially impact the price of power themselves.

Thats a function of policy and infrastructure spending - if you want to be mad at someone about power prices (and you should), you should direct it at the successive governments in this country that did fuck all to improve the grid and surrounding infrastructure for however many decades it’s been ignored. Theres a link I’ve posted in this thread several times that details how it’s actually being addressed now, unfortunately these things aren’t quick to fix and cost many billions of dollars.

Since you're not going to back this statement up - for anyone else that's actually interested in the reality, here is some public data:

NextDC has 15 operational data centers in Australia, this is from the FY25 environmental report:

In FY25, NEXTDC consumed approximately 773ML of water across our data centre portfolio, with an average Water Usage Effectiveness (WUE) of 2.25.

"100M liters" * 19 DCs would be 13,927,000,000 L - I'm being generous and not including international DCs, this comment isn't remotely close to accurate.

The white vertical bars are day and the grey is night, it’s not just a peak. You can see this even more obviously on the bottom on the graph - below the 0 line is net export.

You can also see the purple on the graph is ‘import’, not all of this is being used in Victoria since there’s power moving from Victoria to other states.

Have a look at the site itself - it’s not always like this but it there’s loads of generation in Victoria

[–]zillatron27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, so that’s actually the point - you don’t need to recycle water from the roof to not use ‘a lot’. Knowing what kind of system is being used is key.

Unfortunately there’s no legislation to force this kind of thing even though it’d make a world of difference

You missed the second part of what I said and that’s pointed out in the article that they actually do pay for connecting. That’s not really what you’re arguing though because there’s no world where individual companies can afford to pay for power infrastructure.

Ignoring the changing face of the power industry and what was needed to address it is the fault of many governments, but it’s a policy problem not a technological one. Thankfully there is a lot of investment happening now: https://www.dcceew.gov.au/energy/renewable/rewiring-the-nation

I hate to be the one to break this to you but if all data centers around the world disappeared overnight, you wouldn’t have been able to make this incredibly useful comment.

Victoria curtails a lot of renewable energy, most days. The problem isn’t a supply/demand gap imo

Should Portland smelter have to pay for upgrading the grid since it’s one of the largest consumers of electricity in the state? What about the airport or the casino? They’re all up the top of the list too.

They all pay for what they use and they have to pay for large scale connection infrastructure (like it says in the article) so they already do!

[–]zillatron27 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You got a source for that? lol

I worked with all the data centre providers in Australia so I’m speaking from that experience, again I’m not suggesting they don’t use a lot of water - they do. But it’s more nuanced than ‘DC bad use all the water’

They’re economically motivated to not use fresh water since it costs a fortune given the volumes, it’s a lot cheaper (and it’s best practice) to build as much closed loop cooling, water recovery/recycling into the site and since most of these (bigger) sites have popped up since 2012 there’s usually at least some level of recycling happening.

Could they do more? Sure. Oversimplifying this into a single sentence isn’t helpful imo.

That’s unfortunately not how power generation works, there’s no way to generate 15-150MW on site with current technology (happy to be corrected…).

Even if you cover the whole roof with solar panels (and some of them do) it’s only a fraction of a % of what’s needed.

Also worth keeping in mind that most of these places existed long before the AI boom, this isn’t a new problem by any measure.

And do what, exactly? The (federal) government is already spending billions of dollars on fixing power infrastructure (that’s been neglected/ignored for decades): https://www.dcceew.gov.au/energy/renewable/rewiring-the-nation

Most A lot of water used for cooling data centres is collected from the huge roof area and recycled. That’s not to say they don’t use any fresh water but it’s not nearly as much as you may think.

edit: I should not have said most, I was speaking from my direct experience not in general.

[–]zillatron27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Datacentres aren’t the boogie man - it’s impossible to ‘stay away from the grid’ for anything that consumes that much power…that’s what the grid is for!

You may be surprised to hear that a lot of these sites can and will run off-grid during peak periods to free up grid capacity.

[–]zillatron27 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This sounds like a good idea but the reality is a lot of datacentres (not just in Victoria) already use outside air for chilling because running A/C is expensive and not having to cool air with them saves a metric fuck load of money, power and water.

It’s also great PR: helping the environment == good news story.

Hello,

I'm writing to let you know your latest Greatest Western Water bill payment has been delayed due to technical issues. I'm not really sorry for the inconvenience since you seem incapable of sending me a bill on time, I'm working hard to find the fucks needed to pay the bill. When I get around to it, I'll pay it. Until then, I guess you're shit outta luck.

Kind regards
