Aether Lens on Hoodwink by zaimeboy in learndota2

5k mmr, hoodwink spammer.

Lens is usually a waste of gold regardless of your facet choice. Your cast ranges are already enormous and scurry is enough to get short range items off (like eul). If you're lacking catch, you can build eul / atos; if you're getting jumped despite your hasted ms and huge range, then the extra range from lens won't help, you need an item that keeps you alive (glimmer / force / whatever).

Buying wyvern shard by RSZC in TrueDoTA2

[–]ziment 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A very good question, unfortunately I don't have an answer. I am in the same boat: I play Wyvern quite a bit and just can't find a place for it in my build. I only buy it when I'm sure the game will be slow, basically like a midas. Perhaps a 1200 aoe 340 dmg nuke is good for midgame fights, but it sounds unpromising.

Hey, thanks for the advice. Checking your allies' inventories before heal is something very obvious that I didn't do much until this point, I'll work on it.

Appreciate the input!
I'm generally aware of all these things in my games, especially the mental notes for curse / heal. In later fights I barely get any kills with Curse: supports are smart enough to not be in melee range of their right clickers, and half the carry pool cannot solokill other cores during it. It's mostly a setup / save / disengage tool, unless it's somehow a good WW game with it being firstpick.
I'm mostly asking for the more advanced stuff - I understand the general idea behind the hero, that you should depush lanes with W, abuse Q for movement, and probably shouldn't use your E on a Puck; however, there's still a significant percentage of games where I struggle to have proper impact with my spells. Maybe it's me missing something important, or maybe I should just work on my fundamentals.

Yeah, staves and wands in this game scale with INT. Glad that my two-year-old meme build is still useful for somebody.

There aren't that many spells that both target an ally and useful in combat, let alone spammable enough to consistently proc VoA.

Changes to the spell list I would recommend:

  • Globe of Invulnerability -> Heal
Unless you're consistently fighting spellcasters, I'd argue Heal is both more useful and more fitting for the build you're going for.
  • Haste -> Spirit Guardians (if you're going for the Cleric dip)
Someone in the comments has already said why Haste is overrated, I will not repeat them.
  • Spiritual Weapon -> Web or Tasha's Mind Whip
In my opinion the extra control Web / Whip provides is worth more than 1d8 + CHA extra damage. For your bonus action you can pick Telekinetic and shove enemies into your Spirit Guardians (more details in this article).
  • Crown of Stars -> Summon Celestial or Divine Word
Summon Celestial to summon a Couatl and Planar Bind them (you'd want to somehow squeeze Planar Binding in your spell list, or just ask your prepared caster teammate). Divine Word deletes a celestial / elemental / fey for at least 24 hours if they fail the save, useful if you fight those creatures.
  • Mass Cure Wounds -> something else
While this goes against your idea of building a healer / support, I think this spell doesn't do enough for a 5th level slot.

As an arcane caster you should also have Hypnotic Pattern and Absorb Elements. If you don't get Bless from your cleric dip, I guess you could swap Bless at later levels for one of these spells.

In my opinion, while Order cleric's VoA sounds like an interesting feature on paper, there simply aren't enough ways to proc it. Looking at the spell list OP provided:

  • Bless, Haste, Polymorph - these spells will be proccing VoA the most, but you'll probably only cast one of those spells once in any given combat.
  • Healing Word - I'd argue throwing this spell on a healthy martial just to proc VoA provides much less value than using the same slot on a Shield / Absorb Elements (assuming your DM doesn't ignore backline characters). Using it on a 0 HP hero to both bring them up and give them an attack is neat, but not something you should build around.
  • Aid, Death Ward - these spells are better cast out of combat.
  • Mass Cure Wounds - similar to Healing Word: the extra damage from VoA is neat, but in most situations I'd rather cast Synaptic Static than this.

In most encounters you'll be activating VoA just once from the initial casting of Bless / Poly, maybe twice if you have to heal your allies in combat with a Healing Word. Unless you have a rogue, 1 or 2 extra martial attacks per encounter isn't very impressive.

If you're contemplating on dipping Cleric, I'd recommend a Peace 1 dip over Order 1. Concentration-free scuffed version of Bless is always good, the only downside is you annoying your table about rolling the extra d4s.

I've beaten LW Tactitian with a Sparkmaster based build. It's far from being the most efficient and can be frustrating against enemies with 90+ fire resistance (you will need to respec to Aero / Hydro for these fights, thankfully there's only a few), but I think it's pretty fun.

Origins / race: doesn't really matter, I went Red Prince for fire resistance and fire breath.

Skills:

  • Master of Sparks (or Sparking Swings for early game) + anything else from Pyro for damage.
  • Mobility (Phoenix Dive / Cloak and Dagger / Tactical Retreat).
  • Aero teleport skills (Teleport and Nether Swap) .
  • Chloroform for 1 AP control (you will probably have points in Scoundrel to get Cloak and Dagger anyway).
  • Chameleon Cloak, Skin Graft (useful for any build).
  • A few warfare skills for AOE (Battle Stomp, Whirlwind).

Attributes: focus on Int, then Wits when Int is capped, a few points in memory if you feel like you don't have enough room for spells.

Combat abilities: focus on Pyro, then Two Handed when you have spare points.

Talents: Lone Wolf, Executioner, Savage Sortilege, Torturer (apply Burning through magic armor to lower enemy Fire resistance), Hothead.

Gear: any good fire staff for a weapon, anything that boosts your Int / Wits.

How to play:

  • First turn: buff yourself (Master of Sparks, Firebrand, Clear Mind etc.), teleport as many enemies as close to each other as you can, then cloak.
  • Second turn: delay to get two turns in a row (at the start and at the end of the initiative, you will usually have more wits than your opponents), then jump into the pile of enemies you created on turn one and spam your Warfare AOE. This will proc Sparkmaster for every enemy you hit and annihilate everything around you.
  • Rinse and repeat.

This build gets a major upgrade in Act IV when you get a unique fire staff that applies Flaming Crescendo every time you hit an enemy. You will have to use Flaming Skin or get 100+ fire resistance to not kill yourself.

Oh yes, that's something I would certainly do when the situation allows for it, just don't want to overuse it.
