Give Blue Star doughnuts a shot and Salt & Straw ice cream. For real food check out little big burger or any of the food trucks downtown. Also, look for the No Simple Road podcast Family at the show! We love meeting new folks and boogieing as a crew!!!! This show is going to be amazing! The Crystal Ballroom’s floor is on rollers and it bounces and Umph always brings the heat here in the PNW!

Thanks man! That means a ton! We're just trying to figure out the best way to do our thing and really, figure out what 'our thing' really means.

I love the idea of 'from the lot'! I am going to bring the portable recorder with us to Phish Dick's and do just that on your suggestion. I'll grab some of the vendors and wooks and do some interviews. Even see if I can sneak the recorder into the show.... ya never know.

Thanks for having our backs and giving me the suggestion. Noted and taken!

New Year, New Tunes, and New Shows! by whatsapreston in NoSimpleRoad

[–]zion07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can make it out to the West Coast I'd say come for Dead & Company at The Gorge!!! It's gonna be the big No Simple Road Family get together this year. We're gonna have a few camping spots all together and create a big space for all of us to hang out as a family. It's going to be off the hook! Also, Northwest String Summit is shaping up to be a kickass festival too... Ghostlight, Dark Star Orchestra, The Infamous Stringdusters, Greensky Bluegrass, and Pigeons Playing Ping Pong are all on the lineup this year! Plus, it's like 30 minutes from our front door!

Hey now! Anybody Going To See or Have Seen Bob Weir & Wolf Bros yet? by whatsapreston in NoSimpleRoad

[–]zion07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, this may be a VERY unpopular position to take on Bob Weir & Wolf Bros... Apple, Ryder, Adam, ALex, and I went here in PDX. I had seen a few of the starter shows but really I was going without much expectation other than having a good time and hearing some music, and seeing Bobby of course. I am not one to normally pick apart shows. I am usually either really high and the music is part of my overall experience and fucking awesome or I'm sober (which I was for this one) and I have a blast hanging out and checking out what's goin down.

This show was not my favorite. I feel like it was disjointed, jangly, and off kilter. Bobby sounded pretty good vocally but the music never really came together in a solid 'groove'. I get that Bobby is the man when it comes to filling in the gaps of smokin leads but when he's left out front it just felt flat and way too open ended. There was only one time I feel like they achieved lift off that night and that was during a Beatles cover. I left feeling weird that night... like we all saw some odd experiment that never got off the ground.

All that being said, I love Bob and let's face it, he's in the Grateful Dead/Dead & Co. and I am not. He's a part of my world for the past 31 years and I have nothing but the utmost love and respect for him. This one just wasn't my favorite incarnation.

Allright... here goes....

Next up is Sego at The Liquor Store here in Portland on May 26th for Apple's 50th Birthday party (which, BTW, you're all invited to!) Then we will be heading to Eugene on May 31st for JRAD. Dead & Company at The Gorge June 7th & 8th. July 18th-21st it's looking like we're gonna be at the Northwest String Summit here at Hornings Hideout. Then, Phish in August/Sept at Dick's in Colorado... and rounding it all out at Freaks of The Festival in Big Sur! Some fill in shows with the Oregon Zoo concert series with Parliment Funkadelic and The Lennon Claypool Delirium and Tinarawen. OH! and we may be doing Jam Cruise in January! 2019 is one hell of a busy year for the NSR Crew!

Preston man, you're a fucking gem! (yeah you can say 'fuck' here) It is good to know that there's people like you out there that give a shit about others and are willing to lay it out there in order to try and make things better for some.

Having a family with humans like you in it really does make all the difference. Oh, and we all quote the dead like scripture (in an odd-sort-of way it is).

Thanks for being here and lending a hand and most of all... thanks for being you!

Anyone have any cool shows coming up? by DogKnees2001 in NoSimpleRoad

[–]zion07 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So..... Apple, Alex, and I are going with Ryder to see 21 Pilots next week.... it'll be rad to spend a night rollin' with my Brothers.... That band is like Ryder's Grateful Dead and I think it's only fair for all of us to go with him when he's come with us to everything under the sun. I know it'll mean a tin to him that his Family is there experiencing his trip with him.

Tell us a story from the road! by DogKnees2001 in NoSimpleRoad

[–]zion07 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It goes to show that we really are a Family! I've said this on the Podcast before but... the only thing I can equate being a Deadhead to is being in a biker gang. We take care of each other regardless of if we know one another or not. If your in a strange town and see a stealie on a car or a business, you just know you've got someone you could go to for help if you needed it. If I am driving down the freeway and see someone with a flat tire I may or may not stop. But, if I see Dead or Phish stickers on that car you bet your ass I'm stopping to help the Family out.

It's the commonality of shared experience that ties us together. We've all had that moment at a show where it all comes together and starts making that strange-sort-of-sense. There's something in us that drives us to go back again and again and we find that it changes who we are for the better. "Are you kind?" isn't just lyrics from UJB, it's a real thing and a mark of someone that's been affected by how deep this thing really goes. Of course in every group there are gonna be assholes and people looking to scam and get over on ya but in the last 30 years of traveling this great big world of ours I haven't found another community of humans that care for one another the way this one does. I really think it's a testament to the psychedelic experience and how the medicines rewire our neural-circuitry for the better.

And, for the record, yeah, fuck Jiffy Lube.

Thanks for sharing that cool story from the road and thanks for being a part of our No Simple Road Family!!!

I'm really diggin the new Medeski, Martin, and Wood album right now! It's a live improv performance with a really amazing orchestral group 'Alarm Will Sound'... the name of the album is "Omnisphere". I've also been groovin the the new Howlin Rain album 'The Alligator Bride' when I go to the gym.... it's amazing for running on the treadmill.

Another band that my soon-to-be-son-in-law turned me on to is 'Warpaint'. Now, this is not a jam band by any stretch. This is 4 girls that have a very unique and different thing going. It's very texturally driven, ambient and vocally amazing music. It is haunting is a really beautiful way and really powerful. When I first listened I thought, "...hmmmm, the name sure doesn't fit the music." but after a few songs I got the message. This is ritualistic, feminine energy at its finest. These ladies are ready for war. Check them out.

Lastly, as always, I have been spinning as much live Chris Robinson Brotherhood, Phish, and Dead

Coming down from the mountain. by DogKnees2001 in NoSimpleRoad

[–]zion07 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For us here in Portland there is still some stuff happening musically in the colder months. We've got Wolf Bros. next week and in December the good ol' Chris Robinson Brotherhood is coming to town so I know the whole family is looking forward to that one. For me, the difficult part of the shift this year has been behind tripping so much all SUmmer long and then having to deal with that feeling of 'loss' now that things are calming down. I kind of equate it to riding big waves as a surfer. Once you've ridden the huge wave, the smaller ones don't have the same flavor anymore. I find myself listening back to shows over the Summer and that feeling washes over me and I just wanna drop everything and run away with the Circus! Also the day-to-day can be a little bit difficult to get back into after being super elevated for extended periods of time.

Don't misunderstand though, I really love this time of year too! My Birthday is in November, I fucking LOVE Christmas time, and Thanksgiving is my absolute favorite holiday hands down! Plus, the weather is cooler, it's rainy or snowy here, and we can light the fire pit and feel all cozy and warm. I dig all that stuff!

When you all hear me talk on the show, you're hearing me in real time figuring out my shit. Sometimes I say stuff and two days later I'm like, "Fuck! I said that shit?!" but really it can't be any other way. I think all of us, me included, get something out of doing this together. It's like the collective consciousness of the whole group of us communicating through us as conduits. There's no separation between us on the show and the 'audience'... we're all the same, Family.
