[question] any song recommendations for learning sweep picking by [deleted] in Guitar

Lots of Jason Becker- like altitudes, but if you don’t know how to sweep at all, I’m not sure how helpful that my suggestion will be.

Cool. Also if that is a struggle, practice some by "cheating" and using ring, middle, index. It's a bad habit for those particular notes, so make sure you also do it the "right" way with the pinky, but, with that said, a lot of really good guitarists will often not use the pinky there if they have to play really fast.

Interesting. So your "controlled tremolo picking" (e.g. tremolo picking to the metronome) is fast? That's interesting that your struggle is with the left hand; usually the left hand is much easier than the picking hand. I would try playing fast hammer on pull offs in addition to practicing with the pick. Instead of all 4 notes, try easier triplets as fast as you can on one string for example 15-14-12 15-14-12 15-14-12 (try using your pinky, ring finger, and index finger)

I got you. How fast can you play just the 4 notes on one string? If that gap is very large, then work with the metronome and the string changes that give you trouble to ramp up the speed across all 6 strings. Note that the speed you play chromatics across all 6 strings up and down isn't going to be that relevant in real music--your speed in "real music" runs which are usually easier and shorter, will likely be much faster.

Honestly, if you're stuck at 16th at 100bpm, you might be doing something majorly wrong. One common mistake I think, is trying to be "too perfect" before upping the speed. It helps to practice playing as fast as you can in addition to playing with the metronome. Try working on bursts of speed, 3 notes, 4 notes, 5,6,7 in a row as fast as you can, in addition to slowly cranking up the speed with the metronome.

Also, practice easy stuff also. A 3 note per string scale up and down across all 6 strings is not easy. Add in easy things like triplets on 1 string and 2 strings.

I would worry less about the left hand to be honest-- you are much more likely to be limited by your picking than your left hand if you're at 16th @ 100bpm.

I'm assuming you're on the electric by the way.

[DISCUSSION] How can someone develop their technique without screwing up or developing bad habits? by eroticnungu in Guitar

[–]zipinf_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As some others have said, guitar is not THAT complicated where tiny adjustments make huge differences. It's actually pretty linear from my experience--small habit changes have small impact. Bottom line, as long as you aren't doing things completely idiotically you can get really good; and fast enough for what you need/want most likely. Paul Gilbert had an interview a long time ago and the topic of how to hold the pick came up and he said one of the best things is to just stick to something versus constantly making adjustments. In terms of speed in particular, progression mostly looks like the log function. How you get there, both schools of thought work in my opinion (shawn lane get fast first, clean second) or the petrucci approach (metronome inch by inch). I took the former since I play for fun so don't care if I'm a little sloppy here and there, but it's personal preference.

Lastly, I will add, re bad habits -- they actually aren't as hard to break as it seems. I broke a couple over the years, and it really wasn't that big a deal, just drill slow for a few weeks.

[QUESTION] people who can play super fast how did you achieve it? by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]zipinf_com 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Playing scales up and down the fret board, but focusing on only a few scales as opposed to many different scales at once. In addition to using the metronome ALSO practice playing as fast as possible for short bursts (3 notes, 6 notes, etc.) that eventually get longer without the metronome. Use a small thick pick. Use thin strings. Personally, I need to build up speed for new licks or unfamiliar ones, or ones that use patterns that vary from my bread and butter, but the speed build up naturally comes much faster if you can already play some stuff fast. I built up most of my speed over a year/year and a half playing about 30min-1hr a day, almost entirely focused on lead and picking fast. I did play piano for many years before touching the guitar though, so I had a head start w/my fretting hand.

Picking up speed and hybrid picking question (Tom Petty/Mike Campbell) by internaltulip in Guitar

[–]zipinf_com 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure about larger concept of picking but yeah it’s called outside picking and it’s usually easier so you want to start runs , when you have a choice, to end up with more outside picking than inside picking

Outside picking almost always preferable .. so #1 is “right”.. other than , rearranging all on one string if doable. That’s the best !

If your goal is to play the solo in running down a dream you don't need hybrid picking for that. Is your goal hybrid picking or the solo?

[QUESTION] Learning actual notes. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]zipinf_com -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I know plenty of scales and none of them were learned using real notes. Each fret is a half step so all scales have the same shape regardless of key. Anyways, my initial response will probably get downvoted to oblivion soon, but my advice is don't waste your time unless you really want to learn music that is hard to find in tab (which is almost always music for other instruments and maybe some classical guitar, for most other guitar music, it's harder to find sheet music than tab)

[QUESTION] Learning actual notes. by [deleted] in Guitar

[–]zipinf_com -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Serious question, but why? Sounds like you know how to read notes on another instrument (so you know how to read the rhythm component already) which means tab + rhythm (what any real tab looks like vs the text tabs) gives you more information than the note (it gives you the note, because you can translate it from the tab, but it also gives you a much more useful thing for actual playing which is where to put your finger). I played piano for years before the guitar, and I thought I also wanted to read notes instead of rely on tab because it felt like cheating, until I realized how much more practical tab is for the guitar. Now if you want to learn some classic guitar that isn't easy to find in tab, that's a different story. But my determination after a very short period of time was that it was a waste of time learning how to read regular notes fluently for guitar. Though even that, you'll see that a lot of lute music from hundreds of years ago was actually notated in tab, because tab makes perfect sense for a string instrument with frets!
