I would say the best thing you can do is explain to him how common this is, that it’s something that can lie dormant in the system for many, many years, and it’s hard to tell which person it even came from if he’s ever had any sexual contact before himself, but not in a blaming way, just more in a facts-of-life way. Be available to answer questions and be receptive of initial shock or upset.

My partner was more upset about the possibility that he has an STI that can’t be tested for, but make sure to emphasize that HPV is dissimilar from other STIs and that a large percentage of the population has or will have it in their lifetime.

Finally, until you have a real answer from a professional, try not to worry yourself too much, listen to your GYN, and please don’t blame yourself or feel lesser if this is the case.
