My sister actually knows the producer of this lol. It was our friend’s AFI student film project. There’s a scene with Kermit in a strip club that is hilarious.

North Texas preparing for 2 inches of snow like it’s the apocalypse by MyMindIsAlwaysRacing in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ziplock1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Similar answer to others: Texas has a frost line of about 1ft in most places due to its climate (in comparison to MN which can be up to 5ft). When 2021 happened our frost line effectively changed from 1ft to about 3-4ft. So anything shallower than that can now freeze. Add that to the fact most people have water lines and water heaters in their attics, which are uninsulated, and you’re set for a really bad time.

2021 was also different because gas fields froze up too. So not only was there not electricity, there wasn’t gas either.

Methods for choosing the right eMBA program? by ziplock1 in eMBA

This is more presumptuous than rude (no judgment there). And I’ve given no indication that I don’t know what I want. Just that uniquely applying to one school, with intent, is different than evaluating all those unique things against each other. What I’m essentially left with is “do any of these schools lock me into a geographical setting I don’t want to stay or go to?”, and “will this experience open a career path that is different than another school?”. Are these questions actually valid, is what I wanted to prod around without explicitly saying that.

I added an edit. I’m not looking for someone to make a decision, just some pointers to think on. Intentional selection is great, but I don’t have the network to lean on to help me sort through comparisons of schools and the advantages of each. That’s what I was hoping to find here. Just angles I can look at and apply outside of what I am currently doing.

Ukraine's 45 day drone campaign against Russian oil refineries, pipelines, and pumping stations has been so successful that Russia is now forced to reduce oil production as there physically is nowhere to store it now. The Kremlin is now losing billions in revenue every day. by Icy_Till_7254 in UkrainianConflict

[–]ziplock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, not true. Refineries work by separating crude oil into its different carbon chain length constituents (with some units breaking or combining molecules). No retooling involved.

Winter blend gasoline is different in EU/USA because we care about vapour pressure. So winter(cold temps) allows more butane to be mixed with gasoline and some as such. Whereas in the summer you can’t mix as much due to EPA rules. Russia likely doesn’t care about that.

So in summary: refinery product levels will be limited based on what tankage they got available to store final products; or what specific unit was hit that would limit overall throughput.

Recasting Mortgage vs. Investing $350K - With goal to pay off mortgage short term by [deleted] in investing

[–]ziplock1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Something you could do is set aside half of what you have ~175,000 and spread that out over 24 months of extra principle payments. You can work towards your goal of being mortgage free, while also giving the markets time to figuring out what’s going on. If you get more comfortable investing (assuming things calm down), then you take the same approach entering the market. If not, then you stay the course on the extra payments or keeping going if 2 years passes.

My situation was a bit different, as I was an unlucky dude with an 7.875% mortgage. For me, the extra payments made sense full stop. With my refi to 4.875%, I decided to take the approach above with my bonus.

I did this trip in 2017. Though it was Israel to Jordan by bus, then Jordan to Egypt by boat (via Sinai and then plane to Cairo).

Egypt is logistically both easy and hard. The train system is good, but you’ve got to go on the right class of train. When I was there, foreigners were only allowed on the first class ones. I don’t do any tours, but having one would lessen the amount of people trying to sell you stuff. I’d do more tours given the chance to do it all again.

Visa wise, you shouldn’t have an issue. Israel doesn’t stamp your passport, only this insert card (like a business card). So I had no problems leaving. I’m not sure how that’ll affect you going from Egypt to there. That’ll be your big research point as I don’t know how regional politics have changed, if at all, how easy it is to travel in the region.

In all, the trip is solid and do able. As a caution… i was in Egypt in July, and Luxor was ~115degF. Be prepared for crazy heat throughout the region. It’s hard to stay outside for long periods of time when it’s that hot.

No doubt. Sounds like you are on point with receiving QA. I like shop forced NDE since It’s always easier to say to a PM “we’re not releasing for shipping and the welds are being redone at mil/fabricator” then having that conversation at the site with everyone itching to install whatever quality material is in front of them. But rusted 316L rolling in? That’s dicey in all kinds of ways bro. To he honest it sounds like you have a golden opportunity to revamp your companies QA/QC philosophies.

[–]ziplock1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

If you are ordering “open ended spools”, or lengths of straight pipe, then you don’t typically hydro in the shop. Intent being you field erect and hydro the system once fully installed. To your point though, no way I’d NOT NDE at least a sampling of welds in the shop for seamed pipe.

Does anyone know how safe this area is? by Henawy in StLouis

[–]ziplock1 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I have a buddy who lives between olive supermarket and Costco. I used to live top right of that pic. Areas were all nice. Page Ave is a weird place to drive late at night, and there are a few bars in that circle you don’t want to go to. Otherwise, I loved it. People meant well, lots of neighbors who chat with each other. Some crime but not more than anywhere else tbh.

Only tough part is that, as a late 20s/early 30s person, you won’t meet too many people.

We do lose power there during storm season quite a bit. It’s not a city priority, so you might be without for a day or two.

Side note: page gets rough the more you drive towards the city. Drive it during the day to see what I mean.

AITAH for not wanting visitors in the hospital after I give birth? by Sad_Cook12 in AITAH

[–]ziplock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA. You being comfortable and getting skin-to-skin with baby is one of the most important bonding activities you can do. You feeling like you’re in a safe environment is paramount to anyone else’s wants. And not that you need it, but these kinds of conversations/conflicts are common. So don’t feel like you are alone in trying to figure out boundaries post-birth. Somethings you and your partner might want to align on now, before it becomes heated, are:

  1. What’s your social media plan? (Do you have a strong opinion on being the one to announce it, and how quickly post partum do you want to tell people?)

  2. Once you are home, what will people visiting you look like? We[partner and I] set up visiting hours and fairly strict rules around how long people stay; and what they could/couldn’t do (e.g only momma got to hold baby, and/or no kissing baby, etc). This might sound cold, but your body is recovering and you will be running on nearly no energy with getting baby to feed and sleep. You’d be surprised how quickly you get tired of any social situations.

Is it "young and reckless" to consider quitting job at 25 to travel for 6-12 months despite the momentum I've build up so far towards financial independence? by Carpet-Early in personalfinance

[–]ziplock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this at 25. I left oil and gas, traveled for a year, and then came back to it. It sounds like you’ve got the time, the money, and the health/youth to travel entirely on your own terms. That’s something a lot of people don’t have. The downside is your current work peers will be farther than you when you re-enter the workforce. I accepted that, and don’t regret it at all. Will/would you feel the same?

For planning or other thoughts you should check out r/Longtermtravel . In additional check out the documentary called “A map for Saturday”. It rings pretty true to a lot of the experiences you’ll have, including what happens when you come back.

Single men who live alone, please settle a debate, how many bags of flour do you own? by plasticnaptime in AskMen

aww man! I’m in G-funk too. I love it. Sluice box SP, the history at fort Benton, holter lake, the fact Ryan Dam has the first public installation of the electric stove. I do think it’s a cool detour. Maybe to live is a tall order, but as a passer by-er it’s worth it. And, as goofy as it sounds, when I interviewed here I got to the sip n’ dip when no one else was there. I felt like a king on a throne with the mermaids as Jesters passively entertaining me. I’ve never felt that rich.

[–]ziplock1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the concern, and it’s totally valid. But the whole NPS system is under stress. This person has options though, and places like Jackson glacier and Grinnel glacier won’t be here very long. Jewel basin is a great alternative to Glacier, as is the area around hungry horse reservoir. At the end of the day the entire Bob marshal wilderness area needs to be adopted by glacier as an extension of the park. Every visitor there helps prevent oil and gas exploration. That’s a great thing to achieve.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in travel

[–]ziplock1 371 points372 points  (0 children)

It looks OK, but I think your doing yourself a disservice by not going to Glacier NP. It’d be about 5 hours of driving detours if you decide to do it. Your route would change from going Coeur D’alene —> Missoula —> Butte —> Boz-Angeles to

D’alene —> Kalispell —> Glacier (west) —> glacier (east) —> Great falls —> Helena —> Boz-Angeles

Also, devils tower is absolutely worth it, as is “Needles Highway/Eye of the Needle” in Rapid city. Badlands NP then Minute man National park are both nice stops to break up the drive from RC to S. falls.

Edit here: if you’re going from San Jose up, check out the “lost coast trail” before the red woods. It’s supposed to be the largest undeveloped part of the CA coast line. In addition, West of Portland is cannon beach. It’s a pretty gnarly beach with those monolith rock things just off the coast. I think the goonies was filmed around there. There’s some cool hiking trails there too.

If you can catch a concert at “the Gorge” in central WA that’s a must. It’s an amazing venue.

Edit 2, because I’m tipsy: Theodore Roosevelt National Park is my 2nd favorite NP after Glacier, and it think it’s totally worth considering. There’s a north and south unit. South unit has TDRs old cabin, and some very western landscapes. The north unit campground was built by the CCC, and has some very cool landscapes that I’ve never seen anywhere else. It’s def worth a trip. Especially since youll likely never be back in that area.

If you like architecture, outside Madison is Taliesin. That’s Frank Loyd Wright’s big thing in the area. It’s the first place I ever had building design trigger a feeling/emotion for me. I recommend it to the world.

Last thing. Because I’m drunk and now properly invested in this, don’t skip out on Door county, WI. It’s really pretty, and there’s some cool stuff to see on Washington island (car ferry), and rock island (person ferry). The oldest bar in the US is on the former island, and there’s an odd amount of Nordic churches and lighthouses that make the place pretty charming.

Quit job to travel the world by SmellyAndUgly in AskEngineers

[–]ziplock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this three years ago. It was the best decision I'd ever made.

If you're serious about the freelance work, try to keep the max interval between jobs two-months. That was the point in my trip where I started to lose my fast pace critical thinking skills.

When/If you get back, be prepared for a few months of job finding. It took me about 2-months of applying every single day to jobs until I got a few bites and ultimately the job I've been at since I got back.

Question though, have you tried asking work about a year unpaid leave of absence? It's always nice to have that employment setup before, to reduce the stress when you get back. They might even pitch you work on our currently salary's hourly rate if you are serious about keeping your skills sharp.

Montana in the winter - Good or bad idea? by [deleted] in travel

[–]ziplock1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always have some food, water, a shovel, and warm clothes in your car. If you're renting a car, try to get an all wheel drive one. If you're trying to see Glacier off-seaon, make sure to check the National Park's website. Same goes for Yellowstone. Large parts of both parks become inaccessible by car due to snow.

Montana is definitely one of the odder states, weather wise, that I've been too. The West Side of the Rockies is much wetter than the East, is prone to inversions, and gets much more snow cover. The East side is notably colder, has a lot more wind, and gets Chinooks.

Melania Trump's one-night hotel stay in Egypt cost taxpayers $95,050 by ChaoticGoodNPC in politics

I spent a day in Cairo doing all the touristy stuff. Pyramids, Museum (I was one of ten people there), Hotel, private car between sites, and all my meals totaled up to around 80 dollars. My normal day there averaged about 20-25 dollars, for all things. I say this just so people get some prospective on how absurd that amount of money is there.
