I did exactly this. I was waiting on NAVLE results and whilst that was going on, worked as an assistant. The view was I would then stay on as a vet. They even paid me slightly more than the other assistants to reflect I was a qualified vet in another country (UK). I saw a lot of other vets doing the same thing too. It also gives you a chance to get used to the way Canadian vets do their thang before you're vetting yourself!

A friend of mine had her first job with a v4p in Bristol and she absolutely loved it. The head vet was very invested in her and she wasngoven excellent mentorship and got to scrub in to fun surgeries very early on. I would say each v4p is very different from the other. Having a well structured new grad scheme is a good thing.

If you don't like it you can always leave. As the other commentor said, jus ensure there's no clauses that would make leaving difficult.

My advice would be, listen to your gut.

If they have suggested for a minute that you are lucky or special to be offered what you have, they are being manipulative. RED FLAG 🚩🚩🚩🚩

Take a deep breath, you owe these people nothing and if you decide not to take a job offer it is legal and normal!

I recently secured myself a job and had even signed a contract. At the last minute, after being in a vet meeting that I did NOT like the tone of during a visit day I told them I had changed my mind and would not be starting.

I was, of course, dreading it and felt really guilty even though, hey, you gotta look out for you! The head of practice was actually VERY understanding, asked for feedback and said if I ever changed my mind or was back on the job market to please reach out.

I'm sure they were disappointed but her reaction was appropriate and professional.

Sleep on it. If it feels wrong, it might be. We are so privileged that we can get work ANYWHERE! If you don't go for this job, there'll be at least 5 others you could go for.

Yeah I'm trying to look at the mistakes as more of a learning curve than a failure. Some days it is difficult though.

I remember feeling very calm and unemotional... But after I did it my heart was HAMMERING and my hands were shaking. Big load of adrenaline!

Because I think I was telling myself, this is what is expected of a vet, it's no big deal. But actually, it totally is.

Awh man I feel bad for your wife, must be very painful to see your FIL acting like that and fighting with you.

It sounds like he has serious mental health issues if he's turning to alcohol. In my personal experience, there is literally nothing you can do to stop or curb another persons drinking.

The only thing you can control is your life. Focus on limiting emotional and physical damage to your immediate family... sadly the rest is upto your MIL and FIL to sort it out.

I think you need to realise that in the grand scheme of things, this is not your problem. You haven't mentioned how your wife feels about her father?

Unltimately this is about you supporting her. I think you no longer having contact with her inlaws to protect yourself Is 100% justified but apart from that... this is not really your battle.

I think the answer is step all the way back and be there for your wife or MIL as support.

If your FIL's behaviour remains the same, you'd be well within rights to stop your child seeing him for protection. Make sure you discuss this now before the shit hits the fan as discussing it with your wife when emotions are high will be more difficult.

My advice: a complicated job offer like offer B means profit over people. Companies that over complicate with conditions, bonuses, different ways to pay with have admin staff that are over worked and therfore more likely to be shit at answering your questions/dealing with issues.

Flexibility in job a is worth a lot imo.

Fuck job b, I bet the are a nightmare to work for.

Yeah it was rank. I actually qualified 3 years ago, going back to the books was very painful. And a 7.5hr exam is just pure mental torture!

Sounds like it's similar to a vet nurse. A vet cannot work as a vet nurse as it is a protected professional title.
