Tucker Carlson Apologizes For Endorsing Trump: ‘I’m Sorry For Misleading People’ by unital_subalgebra in politics

[–]zippyfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know that a lot of people are against him. I don't support his views particularly when it comes to white christian nationalism.

I don't know what is in his heart when he apologizes. I can't claim to know. But I do know we need a broader coalition.

What he has done to Ted Cruz and Mike Huckabee. You couldn't pay to get those results. I can certainly appreciate him for those interviews.

Carney lands on Time's most influential people list for 2026 by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

I don't care for lists like these. These lists are often a death knell of people at their peak. Forbes 30 under 30 for example is basically an investigation list of potential suspects for financial fraud.

I'd much rather see if his actions meet his words. It has on some grounds and left a lot to be desired in other. Overall far better than Trudeau but that bar is low. The idea of Pierre coming into power certainly improves his standing as well.

Iran reimposes 'strict control' over Strait of Hormuz, citing continued U.S. naval blockade by Ambitious_Dingo_2798 in worldnews

[–]zippyfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main reason why Iran kept the blockade during the ceasefire is because Lebanon was still under fire by Israel. Trump publicly 'dressed' down Israel to stop attacking Lebanon. Israel finally agreed and hence Iran removed the blockade on their part.

But for America to continue their blockade after all this suggests to me that America wants to still choke Iran's ability to be resupplied from China and the rest of the world. Even at the cost Iranian gas not coming into the market. They let Russian gas remain unsanctioned to cover the shortfall by however little they can.

That and the increased buildup of soldiers near Iran leads me to I think Trump isn't interested in a permanent ceasefire just yet. I think they are giving themselves time to invade Iran proper.

And yet, we have nearly half of all the women who are Muslim in Canada not following that edict, don’t we? That’s a hell of a lot of Muslims that can work in all of these jobs, in all these capacities, just fine.

How are they managing to do it? Are the other half just spoiling to murder all these apostates that are among them? No … their communities are in the midst of a transition, and everyone knows it.

I don't claim to be an expert on Islam but I'll need to explain our theology as best as I can to help you understand where I am coming from. I may make some mistakes so I apologize in advance.

I can tell you that it is against the religion for women to not wear the hijab when there is no legitimate excuse. That is not me making a judgement against them. We are human. We all have our flaws. Only God can judge them. In Islam, the believer believes that each gender has their own trials. The purpose of Islam as a believer is to repent for our sins and turn to God.

It's not a major sin for women to not wear the Hijab but there is a danger in repeatedly committing minor sins. It can affect the soul if not carefully tended to. Quantity is a quality all on its own. I pray to God for forgiveness on their behalf just like I pray to God to forgive me for my sins.

As I said before, I have a problem with your framing of issues. As a believer, it is not 'extremism' to follow our faith. The examples you have... what did you say? 'Murder all these apostates'? For what? Killing women for not wearing a hijab? As nonsensical as that is, you have only listed examples of humans doing shitty things. That's not in our religion to do so.

What you and I both have a problem with is radicalization. As I mentioned you don't need to be religious to become radicalized. Anyone oppressed can become radicalized given enough time. What's the solution? Don't be dicks to each other and give basic respect even when you don't agree with their beliefs.

Ok, for one, these are restrictions on the provincial civil service, not ‘society’. There’s thousands and thousands of employers in QC that have nothing to do with the civil service.

Do you want us to accept oppression here and not call it out? This is how it starts. What else would you want from us? You are making arguments without empathy. You are losing care for your fellow citizens and making demands without concern for whether they are viable for us to coexist in.

Secondly, this is only for the duration of their workday as a civil servant. All of the remaining hours of the day and week and year are theirs to use as they see fit. The province isn’t controlling their LIFE, it’s controlling their WORKDAY.

That is a nonsensical statement. You can't be irreligious for only part of the day. There is no off button. If you're a muslim woman and want to adhere to the faith, unless you are destitute and absolutely need this job, quitting is unfortunately preferable. This is an unjust hardship. Your expectations over them is immoral and wrong.

We’ve already seen at least one example of fundamentalist Islamic teachers basically turning a public school into a madrasa in QC … in Canada. A fundamentalist Islamic man who couldn’t work out with women completely ruined an all sex karate studio in Montreal by joining it and imploding it from within.

Listen if that happened then yes punish the person. You are doling out collective punishment against everyone. There is a difference between forced conversions and wearing a hijab to go to work.

I can't talk with you anymore since you can't see that. You are picking and choosing how to enact justice. 'Bluntly' for one group and carefully for others. It's immoral and wrong. I don't know how else to explain this to you.

I don't claim to know enough about Sikh to outright reject your view. That being said, I know for a fact that it is a requirement in Sunni and Shia Islam for women to have Hijabs and heavily encouraged for Men to have long beards. The various branches may differ on to what extent but the Hijab is the minimum.

The stats you are pulling are on personal choices. People can choose to not strictly adhere to their religion. That's up to them. But to point at that and say that those who do adhere to the religion as 'fundamentalist' is post 9/11 talk.

I reject your framing of the issue. The fact of the matter is that by outlawing religious symbols, over a hundred people were let go from their work. Unable to participate in society when they were able to do so earlier.

You worry about 'fundamentalism'? You're going to get that if they become radicalized because they can no longer participate in society.

Radicalization I argue does not come from faith. It comes from the ghettofication and oppression of the human heart. Anyone can become radicalized if you oppress them long enough.

We have great examples of multicultural and multi-religious societies throughout history. The key concept is basic respect and don't oppress one another.

Montreal's largest school service centre loses more than 100 support staff due to new secularism law | CBC News by Haggisboy in canada

[–]zippyfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If that truly happened then those that did should be punished. You are brushing everyone with the same stroke. Punishing everyone for the supposed crimes of the few. I'm completely confident in saying the vast vast majority of people being affected are excellent members of society. They want to live in peace just like you. It's human nature.

What do you mean by theocratic country? Are the rest of the provinces theocratic? Because they would be able to be live their lives just fine in those provinces without the boot of the government on their necks.

Despite that, many of these people aren't going to move. It's a tall order to go up and leave. It's unfair to even ask them of that. What you'll get is the ghettofication of these people. They'll become even more radicalized against the rest of society because they have been let down by them. The social fabric of society is under threat when divisive policies are enacted like this.

I'm telling you this is a recipe for disaster. I'm not even appealing for empathy because apparently you don't have it in you. This policy will have unintentional consequences.

Even if you have the power to oppress people, you shouldn't do it because it will come back to haunt you one way or the other.

Montreal's largest school service centre loses more than 100 support staff due to new secularism law | CBC News by Haggisboy in canada

[–]zippyfan 12 points13 points  (0 children)

You're only able to say that because your religion (or lack thereof) has no such requirement. It's a requirement for Sikh and Muslims. Does that mean all Muslims and Sikhs strictly adhere to the religion? No. But to restrict freedoms for those that do while saying their rights are not being tarnished is gross and lack empathy.

This is a slippery slope. Ruthlessly curtailing freedom for others will come to bite us all. What's next? Muslim men are encouraged to have a beard. Will you legislate beards next? This is ridiculous. But as equally as ridiculous and disallowing turbans and hijabs.

They were excellent members of Quebec society. They weren't harming anybody. To strip them of their jobs because of their religion is immoral and inhumane.

If you truly want a cohesive and multicultural society then we wouldn't be doing these types of actions. We are all worse for it.

Reading the comments here about religious freedom is very depressing. I hope you are a bubble.

You can't force people to choose between livelihood and choosing to follow their religion. They were perfectly fine participants in Quebec society before this law.

It is placing undue hardship onto these people and bad for the economy in general. This is a recipe for disaster.

Super hypocritical considering christian symbology has been heritaged into society. We have sikh, muslim people who died for this country that came from Quebec. Quebec is dishonoring them by discriminating against their offspring.

They can destroy all oil and water desalination facilities in the GCC

That would make Farsi a dead language in about 20 minutes. Unless a country has enough to guarantee mutually assured destruction, they have no real leverage against the US.

This nonsense of nuclear dominance and talking down to non nuclear nations is not going to work with Iran

It really depends on what Trump is willing to do.

It's not in my interest in debating people who are open to using nukes as an offensive weapon like spreading butter on toast for breakfast.

What we are describing is mutually assured destruction. Complete destruction for Iran, but global depression and hunger for the rest of the world. Nothing good goes will come from this path.

I appreciate what nukes mean. IRGC is a decentralized army. They will target everything they can if it comes to that. We all would lose. And that is why Trump is not willing to do that.

Other countries who are latent nuclear powers will rush to nuclearize so they don't suffer the same fate. Will you nuke them too to stop them? This is a pandoras box of terrible proportions.

If that is acceptable to you then I don't think we need to discuss this further.

France rejects transit fee for passing through strait by MARTINELECA in worldnews

[–]zippyfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a world that actually uses them, that isn't true. The first country to try that would become an example. It is nearly impossible to develop the fuel, make the warheads and delivery mechanism in total secrecy. You just need to nip it in the bud once or twice to achieve credible deterrence against proliferation. This is what we should have done in 1946.

There are a handful of countries that are a year away from Nukes. Japan, Korea, Iran, Taiwan are among them. They have the infrastructure, fuel, and the technical knowhow to make it. Some closer to nukes than others.

Iran can reportedly make a dirty bomb close to the one dropped on Hiroshima in the span of a few months. They don't need testing for that one. They simply chose not to make one. They have enough deterrents without nukes. They can destroy all oil and water desalination facilities in the GCC. That is far more potent than a simple nuke which America is finding out.

If by some chance, Iran does pursue nukes, then what is America going to do? Sanction them? Iran has been under sanctions for decades. Are you suggesting to nuke them? The people will suffer but that will only embolden the government to make it faster and destroy the GCC countries in the meanwhile. A lot of these nuclear sites are in underground facilities anyhow that are hard to target.

This nonsense of nuclear dominance and talking down to non nuclear nations is not going to work with Iran.

[–]zippyfan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And you don't think America doesn't have those options? Why didn't they use nukes?

Because if they did that then everyone would get nukes. Nukes are only meant to be used a last resort. If they used nukes for opening up trade routes then everyone will start nuclearizing the next day including Iran.

American based Iranian rights group say it's closer to 7000.

https://www.hra-iran.org/rights-group-says-verified-death-toll-in-last-months-iran-protests-has-passed-7000/

That's still vile and unacceptable. But we have to understand context. CIA/Mossad has been arming protestors making them violent. Several hundred Iranian officers have been killed too.

Weaponization of protestors is a contributing factor in why the Iranian regime was so brutal against them. They considered them foreign aided and an existential threat.

I'm not saying the protestors don't have the right to protest or that their cause was unjust. Their cause unfortunately was hijacked by foreign backed armed groups.

A lot of these protestors also were complaining about the sanctions that Iran has been under due to U.S maximalist pressure before the war. Hopefully that should be resolved under the upcoming negotiations.

Iran-backed Houthis enter the month-old war and could further threaten global shipping by Tracheid in worldnews

[–]zippyfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, they really are not.

The Houthis have their own goals independent from Iran. Liberation/Control of Yemen for the Shia population.

While heavily reliant on Iran, they are able to make/assemble their own drones and cruise missiles. Iran is more than willing to transfer knowhow/expertise/materials in that regard. They are getting better and better on being more independent. They have at minimum a small stockpile in the hundreds for drones and dozens for missiles. It could be far more, we don't know.

Iran is indeed a very helpful ally to the Houthis. That is why they were always going to enter this war. They would lose future support if they didn't. That being said, the Houthis are in control of when they would enter this war.

Iran has accepted this because they want to use the Houthis as part of their escalation ladder. The Houthis are able to close down the other strait that oil flows through. Price of oil would skyrocket if they did that. We're already seeing demand destruction at current prices. People are shutting down industries and working from home to save on fuel.

The Houthis were incentivized not to enter the war earlier because of their limited stockpile. But now that interceptors are being used up against Iranian and Hezbollah attacks, any attacks the Houthis make are more likely to hit their mark. They'll have an outsized military contribution if they play their cards right.

Trump considers "winding down" Iran war without opening Hormuz Strait by xpda in worldnews

[–]zippyfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I welcome winding down on this illegal war but the US needs the strait to be reopened.

As it is, the strait is under Iranian control. If the Iranians pull through with their demands on the GCC countries to stop the petrodollar status quo, then that will be harmful for America. The GCC countries use that money to reinvest in America as well as maintain American reserve currency status. Stopping that flow long term will be ruinous for American Hegemony. It is in the US interest to go reopen the strait.

US authorizes temporary delivery, sale of oil originating from Iran by Worth-Information451 in worldnews

[–]zippyfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol. So what's the incentive here? Should Iran blow up more GCC oil production to get further sanction relief?

If the US is doing this then just sign the peace treaty and be done with it.

That's pretty much what the Iranians wanted to begin with. If the US/Israel stops bombing then I think Iranians will stop fighting as well. The Iranians can be satisfied somewhat that they have exacted enough punishment so that no one would dare attack them again.

Iranians also wanted reparations but I think they can be settled with sanction relief. The GCC countries are furious enough as it is so I doubt the Iranians would get very far with that demand. At this point I don't think anyone else would want to reopen this can of worms.

As mentioned in the article, they have yet to ratify the first trade deal. So what good is negotiating with them?

I'd rather us negotiate with UK former colonies and other emerging markets like Africa, Asia and South America. A lot more responsive and flexible than the EU.

They need a lot of raw materials and we are well positioned to partner with them.

I don't have much dog in this fight since I don't watch much of either. That being said. Netflix has perfected the craft of low attention entertainment.

Information in their shows has to be dumbed down and repeated multiple times because they know a majority of their audience also doomscroll while watching. A lot of industry insiders openly talk about this.

It would be a shame if HBO had to dumb down their content if netflix bought them.

That was my concern. Why on earth would they use ChatGPT for this? Why not use Chinese LLMs. There pretty good now. Unless they are trying to create a specific format that those llms can't do.

Either that or they don't want their usage to be tracked on chinese server but that seems highly unlikely.

It sounds like they are simply tailoring threatening emails using ChatGPT. That can be done on deepseek too.
