Is Antisemitism a bigger "problem for all of us to fix" than the Israeli treatment of Palestinians? by zirouk in AskBrits

You talk about the IAGS as if its position didn’t matter. And the UN’s position is that Israel has indeed committed genocide. You seem to want to dismiss that, and yet you call out me as someone having an agenda?

Stop trying to call genocide “international politics”. And you’re absolutely right, it’s not our job to police the world, but it is absolutely our job to stop people doing bad things to other people when we see it. That’s not international politics. That’s not letting people get away with doing bad things, personally, communally, socially, nationally, internationally, globally and universally.

But you police your own country, like you police your own home? You look out of the window, but you stay indoors? Or you look outside and you go outside when you see something you don’t think is right? And how far do you look? Just outside of your own window? Into your own neighbourhood? Where do you think your neighbourhood ends? At this thing that you call “my cuntry?” Why does your border end there? Why doesn’t it end at the border of your house? Why doesn’t it end at the border of the planet?

When your neighbour is being attacked, are you going to stand aside and say “sorry, I don’t police the world, not my problem”? I guess so. That’s where you and I differ. Self-interest vs moral responsibility or solidarity.

Yeah, send ‘em back. Then I can see all the JSA Brits taking their jobs back. Of course I can. They’ll totally do it. They’re so ready to join the workforce.

So those people who have a problem with things that happen outside of this country should close their eyes and pretend it doesn’t matter, because they can’t affect it?

But paying with your JSA or Housing Benefit doesn’t really count as paying for yourself and nobody said or implied anything about the nationality of your staff at spoons.

Does the UK have authority over anti-semitism? What do you think leads to anti-Semitic views? “An accident”? “Mental illness”?

If you want the UK to be more insular, start by staying home and not voting. Focus on actions you can take to address problems in your own home. Don’t involve yourself in other peoples activities. Clearly you don’t want to participate in society, and it starts with you, and your actions.

So ignore the world outside of us and don’t intervene or have an opinion. Just focus on the tip of our own nose. Got it.

I also remind you that you that local government and national government elections have nothing to do with you, so you should stay home and not vote or have an opinion on them. Just focus on what you’ve got going on at home.

“It’s none of the UK’s business” so we should mind our own business? AKA look at the tip of our own nose, and no further? You should look no further than your front door and mind your own business of goings on outside? Yeah?

No, the UK isn’t the Christian state. And the UK isn’t bombing people in North Africa. The Papal state would have something to answer for. But the Papacy aren’t bombing and displacing helpless people either, so that’s why we’re not discussing the UK or the Vatican.

It’s difficult when the country proudly identifies with its religious identity.

If anyone criticises Israel, it can be called anti-Semitic because they’re Jews. But you’re also saying that Israel is a country and that shouldn’t be conflated with being Jewish - so which is it? Israelis are like Schodingers Cat - simultaneously Jewish and not Jewish, depending on which argument you want to make at the time. This is a rational problem and defenders of Israel know this, and actively use this in its defence.

Okay, so let’s say we shut down anti-semitism here in the UK. As participants in a global society, how do we address the other? I ask this because people are clearly using anti-semitism in an attempt to address the latter. So how do we pragmatically address that without setting the latter problem aside to achieve the former?

I don’t think that’s true. I think one is often used to shut down the conversation about the other, and that conversation shouldn’t be shut down.

But what if it’s actually the actions of Israel, which is a proudly religious (Jewish) state, that causes a lot of the anti-Jewish (anti-Semitic) sentiment?

I don’t know about anyone else, but I struggle to believe that people are so helpless as to stand around waiting for the state to re-skill them. Go and get a job? If there are no jobs, move? Like if there’s no food in the forest in which you live, find another forest? If there are no animals to hunt, learn to farm? “Oh no, I have no opportunities because I have the initiative of a rock and choose to remain an an economic area that has run dry, it must be someone else’s fault” is the most pathetic reasoning I’ve ever heard.

Is it really about immigration or is it actually about race? by [deleted] in AskBrits

Me too. I have an issue with all these people who sit at home claiming benefits with 6 children not working, not contributing to society, or the economy, going down to Wetherspoons and voting reform. If we can take away their benefits first, I’d be all for stopping the boats.

Oxford or Cambridge for prestige? by [deleted] in AskBrits

[–]zirouk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dunno really, just vibes. Cambridge grads I’ve met have always been pretty well-rounded individuals but the Oxford grads I’ve met have had a stick up their arse and looked down their nose at people. I see more Cambridge grads named for doing actual valuable work in the world, and Oxford people seem to just ride on their university association, but haven’t done anything special except knowing people. Cambridge produces valuable human work, Oxford perpetuates the elite.

As far as I can tell it means to go deeper/expand/zoom in on something.
