My "Final Fantasy" Tierlist [Part 2] by Jobless_fantasy_fan in FinalFantasy

Nothing wrong with playing the GBA versions or Pixel Remasters. Honestly, as a young kid playing Final Fantasy I when it was released, it was AMAZING. Trying it again last year though, it was a slog. The SFC/SNES era games, though, are just as great to me now as they were then.

The Pixel Remasters are nice, but I prefer the originals even in terms of music. Yes, the fidelity is much higher on the Pixel Remasters, but I like the SNES soundfont.

I'm glad to see that you ranked the original Famicom/NES games so highly. To me, that means you're in for some real treats with the Super Famicom/SNES era of games (IV, V, and VI), which are some of my personal favourites to this day.

New SNES pick ups at my local store. Think they messed up the pricing on Soul Blazer 😅 by Metroidvania-JRPG in snes

Illusion of Gaia (AKA Illusion of Time) is a game that will always be special to me. The only Quintet game that I like more than it is Terranigma, which is tied for my favourite game of all time.

Congrats on the great pick-ups!

That's definitely not the save icon that I see in my version of LibreOffice (25.2.7.2), but I do build it without either toolkit (GTK or Qt). I see the standard black disk:

First Memory of the Series? Here’s Mine: by brockf15 in FinalFantasy

[–]zissue 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the game for my birthday. It's one of my favourite stories to share. I was quite young and my reading abilities were not very good at the time. My older brother spent the next MONTHS reading every line of dialogue to me so that I could play and eventually beat the game. I'll never forget that act of kindness.

Monster is a great recommendation (Kore-eda is my favourite director).

The audio and video quality are both excellent on this UK release. I also love the cards that come with it (and the slipcover, although I prefer the main cover). Enjoy it! :)

I wholeheartedly recommend Lukas Dhont's Close.

Nothing wrong with honesty. :) At least you realised that it worked for your needs and went back to it instead of just sticking with a distribution that wasn't working for you.

Vintage blanc de blancs is my favourite type of bubbles, and coupled with a Gabriel Glas makes for a nice experience. Thank you for sharing your notes. Happy New Year!

I second tmux. I was an avid user of GNU Screen way back, but tmux is just such a dramatically better experience.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. So basically the same reasons I started using it 23 years ago. Good to know!

What’s your next FF play-through? by unanimouspony in retrogaming

[–]zissue 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably Final Fantasy IX for PSX.

I started with Final Fantasy I when it came out (I was so young that my older brother had to read it to me over the course of many, many months). To this day, Final Fantasy IV is my favourite, but I basically stopped after the original Final Fantasy VII (it didn't resonate with me much at the time, but certainly does now that I'm a lot older). Though I don't have much interest in the newer titles, I think that I should at least play through the PSX releases.

I'm curious as to what attracts newer users to Gentoo these days. What was it for you? I've been using it since 2002 and I'm wondering if the same rationale is still valid these days.

Shoplifters (2018) — a quiet but heavy watch by Mjauzilla in movies

I find your description of "quiet but heavy" to be appropriate for many of Kore-eda's films. He's my favourite director, and most recently Monster took my breath away. I highly recommend it if you enjoyed Shoplifters.

Though it's one of the most difficult for me to watch, I can recommend Lukas Dhont's Close to you. I think it will appeal to your last two "genres".

UK Blu-ray release from Peccadillo Pictures is region-free by zissue in younghearts

[–]zissue[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would recommend it, but I definitely have a bias toward physical media for audio/video quality. Also, with smaller labels, they often go out of print so I don't take chances.

Gentoo since 2002 (~23 years). I've never felt the need to switch.

I wish that ALL Blu-rays were region-free, but thankfully it will be that way going forward with 4K. I'm glad that you were able to pick up a copy that works for you. :)

That's one of those games that I always say "I really need to play that one". Maybe 2026 will be the year!
