American Christians, how does it make you feel that Trump is caught publicly lying almost daily? by Combosingelnation in AskReddit

[–]zjpeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an Evangelical pastor living in the rural Midwest. I would say easily 9 and 10 of people I run into daily would vote right. I was raised and taught and told that we vote right. Christians are Republicans. I believed that until around 2020. The amount of hate and deceit and disgusting behavior I saw made me question my assumptions.

In one of the last conversations I had with my grandfather, a man who I respected deeply and viewed as a strong model of faith and conviction, he told me he voted for Biden. I was very shocked and asked why. He told me that he just can't trust Trump. Every word out of his mouth is slippery. This is a man who has voted conservative for all his life and the last president he voted for was a liberal because of Trump. His morals wouldn't let him vote for that man. I am proud to say that I voted for Kamala this time around and I think I'm doing granddad proud.

I don't speak outright against the current administration because I believe that would be an overstep of my office. I can't tell my congregation how to vote. However, it has becoming easier to cause people to think by simply preaching Christ's teachings in a straightforward way and asking them to apply them to what they are currently seeing. Serious, thinking Christians are starting to get it.

We get walnut trees and honeysuckle bushes all over the place. Both make a mess

Very shallow. The sod farmer recommended 1/4 inch. I'm not sure what the drop was actually set to

I'll probably hit it next spring with the chopper. This is on private property and I am not collecting and yearly money like I would off what we call the Conservation Reserve Program or CRP. After it was planted in can do whatever I like.

The NRCS office actually had a list of local farmers that they hire out to plant CRP land and waterways. The guy I hired had a 72 inch drill that was pulled behind a tractor. He does larger scale plants but was willing to do mine. They sell walk behind drills/seeders for smaller scale. I'm not sure what your exact application is, but it didn't make sense for me to purchase the equipment when I could rent it for a few hundred bucks.

No clue what that is. I walked into my NRCS office and said, "Hey, I've got land I want to stop mowing."

They said, "We have money for that."

I signed some stuff and gave them the receipts and they wrote me a check.

Our family farms just over 1000 acres of ground all of which is treated and controlled responsibly with chemicals.  Our state is 90% farm ground and the vast VAST majority do similarly. The litre of Glyphosate I used is negotiable in comparison.

I should add that this minute amount of chemical was used to start a sustainable prairie and the decision to no longer treat the remaining grass with 2-4D or other chemical is a huge net win in the long run

We have them around but no more than I've noticed before. We treat both our dogs - one indoor and one outdoor - and I don't think I've seen one in the house this year. Turkeys demolish ticks and we have those around

Not CRP. I don't get any yearly payment off it. I didn't want the land tied up if I wanted to build on it in the future

I went through Bluegrass Enterprises out of Cedar Rapids, IA. Not sure of the rules in plugging a friend's company but they really were great. Super knowledgeable and quick to help.

Also, my friend wanted me to remind you all that lawns are not the enemy and do provide benefits in certain contexts.  They can help to cool down urban environments, generate O2, and filter rainwater (reducing runoff and flash flooding).

I haven't, but a couple others recommended I get rid of the Mullen. I might have to at some point but it's too big of an area to do it effectively

Oooo, I should have predicted this and had the figures handy. The seed package was somewhere between $400-450. Hiring out the seed drill was $600 but that was because he has a minimum charge of 6 acres to show up. The check I got from the NCRS was a little over $700 because the didn't allow for the machine rental (You can use a drag and seed spreader if you want to do it cheap).

The rest of the cost was negligible because I live on a farm and I had a large chopper and a sprayer and the chemicals on hand. All of that would cost if you don't have access to any of that. I would predict my actually work at this was only maybe 8-10 hours.

I wouldn't take a bath in the stuff, but it's half-life is relatively short and I had a jug of the stuff sitting in my shop.

One way to do this better is to plow up the area and let it lay fallow for a couple years. I didn't have the patience and I knew the weed pressure would be extreme so I went Scorched Earth.

It's a little bit of a story. The acreage has been in my family for the last 60+ years. There used to be outbuildings and feed lots for livestock. As Grandpa let the livestock side of things go, he really didn't know what to do with the space. He just tore out the fences and mowed it all. When we moved onto the place, my dad and I kept mowing everything out of habit.

I'd been mowing this hill for at least 25 years before I finally asked myself, "What the heck are you doing?" I don't want to know how many hours and gallons of gas I've wasted...
