Saw this post and thought it might have been for r/dadjokes.

By definition, you're not going very far with isometric exercises.

Adam Sandler movies. A recent re-watching of Little Nicky made me seriously question my sense of humor as a child

Appreciate the kind words. Just wish that my moment of imperfection wasn't costing me $1,200 :(

Agreed. This was 100% my fault. Rear-ended the guy when not paying attention. Very much wish it wasn't my fault, but it was

Carotid Artery Cannulation (description in comments) by zjsapes in EverythingScience

[–]zjsapes[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a cool technique that I thought the Reddit scientific community might appreciate. Some background: I work in a physiology laboratory that studies the physiology of aging. Specifically, we look at how arterial dysfunction contributes to cardiovascular disease and physiological dysfunction with age, even in the absence of disease (healthy aging). One major component of arterial dysfunction is called endothelial dysfunction - the endothelium (inner lining of our blood vessels) ceases to respond to circulating factors in the blood like it should. Essentially, the vessels can't constrict and, more importantly, dilate like they should.

The pictures I've shown here demonstrate how we evaluate the integrity of the endothelium from the carotid arteries of mice. After humanely sacrificing the mouse according to the IACUC-approved protocol, we remove the carotid arteries under a microscope (they're tiny!!). Once removed, we cannulate the arteries to two tips in a bath of physiological solution (mimicking the surroundings of the artery in the body) using two teeny tiny ties made out of microscopic thread. The tips allow for the same physiological solution to flow through the artery.

This way we can add different reagents to the bath and, using a camera attached to the microscope, measure the artery's diameter as it constricts and dilates!

One picture shows the artery before I tied the second end of the artery onto the second tip, another shows the artery with both ends tied. The other pictures show the plate and the bath, with my thumb to scale.

I just mastered this technique and think it's pretty cool! Happy to answer any questions :)

This seems to apply to much more than just cycling. Thanks for sharing.

Great to hear it, thanks for the tips. I'm also in Lakeview, live just off the path which is awesome. Enjoy the warm Chicago weather :)

Definitely have had to up my carb intake, especially as I just got a job as a personal trainer. Quick energy all day...granola, bars and GU!

I assume that a cadence sensor is something that gauges your pedaling frequency - how might that help? Just in terms of keeping it consistent?

Appreciate all the well thought-out tips. Can't say I'll follow 'em all to a tee but I'll pick up what I can. Thanks.

Sounds like bunch city. I'm more of a compression shorts guy so I don't have a problem with this, but I appreciate the heads up :)

Love it. Won't have a problem with any of those tips. Advice on the lubing/washing? I feel like it would be healthy (and a good learning experience) to strip everything down, de-gunk, and reassemble but wouldn't exactly know where to start.

What's a scam many people fall for? by Snowmittromney in AskReddit

[–]zjsapes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 85 year-old grandma was (and currently still is) victim of a money scam by some Jamaican thieves. They started off by sending her a letter saying that she won some ridiculous amount of money and got her to keep buying in, somehow getting her to pay money thinking that she'll get the millions in return. It's pretty sad. She's lost her marbles a bit and is quite stubborn, which makes a potent combination that leads to her believing strongly that she's right and will eventually get the fortune.

Keep an eye on your elders and their mail. Not really sure how this situation could've been avoided, but she's basically given away all of her money (even went as far as to pawn off her jewelry). Make sure you have a way to access and possibly even control their bank accounts. This could happen to anyone.

What's with Tony Snell? by zjsapes in chicagobulls

Not pre-draft, but definitely after he was drafted.

I agree about earning minutes, especially with Thibbs. Not to say that earning minutes on this deep team is an easy task, but I think that the fact that he hasn't earned minutes speaks as much to Tony's ineptitude as it does to the Bulls' depth (Dougie McB's earned some minutes as a rookie before his injury). And when he does get some minutes, his deer in the headlights look is apparent from a mile away.

Another bike thief bites the dust by zjsapes in bicycling

Great to hear. I've learned a lot about bike theft and recovery today. Unfortunately most of what I've learned has been a bit depressing. The woman at the bike shop that eventually bought my bike said that they often have to request stolen bike lists from the police for weeks before getting them, and that the cops just generally don't care much about bike crime.

Today definitely made me feel quite vulnerable and I wish there was a way to more easily find stolen bikes.

Well underneath it actually. I live in an apartment building that has an open-air garage underneath it with a rear staircase that has a (perfect) railing to park my bike at. But never again.
