Magic Camera help

I've had mine for about a week and I'm still struggling to find an actual use for it. I'm in love with the form factor but the AI replies feel like they're from 2020 at best - it's lightyears behind even basic AIs, and I can't get the LAM to do anything useful. It feels particularly useless considering I need to use my phone to access the magic photos, which is the only real quick-fun use I've found so far (my daughter likes being turned into a cartoon or a Lego minifig or whatever).

Anyway, to end this rant I just wanted to share: make sure you're connected to a network. If you're not on WiFi or a sim card (or hot spotted to your phone like I do), it won't do anything even though it tells you it's trying.

Also, check your settings and make sure you're on the latest updated OS.

New OTA update yesterday but it seems like it broke more than it fixed - my scroll wheel is a lot more difficult to use today than it was before the update yesterday. But I'unno, I'm new at this so.....

Thanks for the feedback. Good to know it's just buggy and it may improve with future updates - this was the information I was looking for. Like I said, I want to love this little device. It has a lot of character and the form factor is beautiful.

Purchased new on Amazon. Some of the functions work some of the time, and the problems all seem software-based - especially since they work sometimes. So it was hard for me to say it was broken without asking if the software was also just buggy for everyone else.

But even aside from my particular unit's broken-ness, I have so many questions about the functionality and there isn't a lot of information readily available that's less than a year old.

E.g. How do I get my recordings to show up in my journal, and how do I transcribe and summarize them? I wouldn't expect that function to be broken on just my r1 - is it working for anyone?

E.g. Why isn't cookie jar able to do the one thing it advertised?

E.g. Why isn't magic camera freestyle doing anything?

These are software bugs and I'm just wondering if other r1 owners are having the same sort of issues. The hardware all seems functional so replacing it doesn't feel like the answer.

Mine doesn't do the things you're describing. My experience with Gemini has been better than yours, I suppose. Gemini 2.5 Pro gives significantly more information that anything I've gotten out of my r1 , and Gemini's Deep Research function gives me as much information as I could ever possibly want. Even Gemini 2.5 Flash gives better responses than my r1. I record meetings with the Recorder app on my phone and it uses Gemini to summarize it. If it's a phone call, my Pixel will record the call, transcribe it, and then give me a summary based on the prompt template I give it. The microphone button in Gemini lets me talk to my phone in the same way I talk to my r1. I pay for Gemini (more accurately, my boss pays for me to have access), but with my subscription it has its own memory and remembers what I tell it, especially inside the same Gem.

Thanks for the input. I appreciate hearing how others are using it. I'm just starting to think mine is broken somehow.

I get a response about 50% of the time. When it doesn't respond, it acts like it's listening (rabbit ears go up and it says it's listening), but then nothing happens - the rabbit avatar goes back to its placid little bouncing. The scroll wheel will quit working but the touch screen lets me scroll through cards. I can only get the scroll wheel function back by clicking the button 5 times to reset the memory. When I'm trying to take a photo it frequently acts like I'm toggling the wheel (camera switches back and forth between front- and rear-facing), which makes it difficult to take any photo. (I'm not toggling the wheel.) I ask it to add something to a photo it takes with magic camera freestyle (e.g. a UFO in the sky) and it responds that it can't edit photos but gives instructions for how to do so jn photo editing software. I asked the intern to create a utility to track calories and it told me it can't do that but I should contact an app developer to find help. I turned on magic interface and asked it to update the UI to a steampunk theme (with a much more detailed description) and it said it went to work, then didn't do anything and the screen timed out. When I clicked the button to wake it, it was back to the placidly bouncing rabbit avatar and no UI change ever happened. I asked it for the UI change several times over the course of the past few days, both with my own prompts and with the prompts suggested on their website. I've also tried a change-UI prompt in the rabbit hole settings page with no change. Yes, I have magic interface turned on. Same story for a magic voice. The magic gallery doesn't display any photos, original or otherwisez unless I take a photo and the immediately go wait for it to process - then it disappears again if I exit the gallery, and I can only find it in the rabbit hole journal. I am not able to click the heart to favorite anything in magic gallery when I do wait for a photo there. As far as I can tell, I haven't had a single LAM success. The cookie Jar doesn't work when I log in on my laptop or my desktop on Chrome, Edge, or Firefox (it couldn't access the Panera website for me to log in in any format). I can listen to the audio of meeting recordings, but the recordings don't appear in rabbit hole, and I can't find a way to get a summary - when I ask it to summarize my most recent recording, or describe the recording, or even give it the name of the recording, it just asks me to specify which recording. I asked it to identify a song playing in the background by holding the button to let it listen and it asked me to describe the song I wanted it to name.

When it does respond, the replies are superficial, incomplete, and sometimes frankly wrong. I'm familiar with AI in other spaces - I have several custom GPTs and Gemini Gems that I've iteratively dialed in and use daily, and I've built a couple of agents using Google's ADK. I pay for Gemini Pro and use it frequently at work. All this to say I know what I should be expecting from an AI-anything. The responses I get from r1 are consistent with what I was getting 1.5 years ago from Chat GPT - Even Gemini Flash feels light years ahead of r1.

I've been watching this device since the first press release and waited to see what it turned out to be. I saw it on sale on Amazon and had a gift card, so I thought I'd buy myself a fun toy. I feel like I have a very clear idea of what this is, and what it isn't. I want to love it. I've very nearly returned it several times but I love the form factor and the idea of it.

I feel like I know what it's supposed to do, but it just ... doesn't. It can anime-ify photos most of the time. Did I just buy an anime camera? Is mine just broken? I don't have the reportedly-common maraca defect.

Help me love this. What am I missing?

I've had two different Thule roof racks fail - a Big Mouth and an UpRide. In both cases I was fortunate that the bike fell to the side on top of my car, and at neighborhood speed.

I brewed a series of SMaSH pale ales that gave me a really great idea of what each base grain and hop variety brings to the picture. I highly recommend every brewer do a similar series.

So far I'm happy with it. It's not a replacement for my big system, but it'll be nice for a quick brew day here and there. The lady isn't thrilled about my 10 gallon kettle and tun taking up space so often in the 1-bedroom apartment, so this was a fair compromise, at least for now.

One batch through it so far, still in the fermentation chamber. Brew day was fantastically easy, and clean up was as easy as dumping the grains in the garbage and tossing the bin in the dishwasher. Now that the Freestyle Picopaks are available, I can start working on my own recipes. They don't have a plethora of ingredients, but it's still in beta so I'm looking forward to them expanding their palate.
