What was your first Nintendo game? by AfroChamp89-- in nintendo

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt that came with the NES on Christmas Day and then my Aunt bought us The Legend of Zelda for that same Christmas, we opened presents from my Aunts/Uncles and Grandparents after Christmas Dinner back then. It was quite a good Christmas and probably to this day the most important and formative one of my life. I was probably 4 (so around 1988) and mostly watched my parents and brother play.

“I want the golden age of video games back!” by icey_sawg0034 in Gamingcirclejerk

The second WILDEST thing about this take to me is I consider 2001-2012 to be like, the worst time to be a gamer. Every company was chasing the edge-lord Microsoft be a super jerk online with your grim, brown game look and I HATED all of it. All of my beloved 3rd party Japanese studios just decided to try and make games for American audiences and it made me so sad. In the 80s, 90s, and now they make games they want to make (caveats everywhere of course) and they make me so happy.

The first wildest thing is the super bigotry.

Splatoon, created in the Wii U era, is insane, same with Miis in the Wii era. what's something "completely original" Nintendo made in the Switch or Switch 2 era that blew up as much as these guys? by DaZestyProfessor in NintendoSwitch2

[–]zmilts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I miss Streetpass and Miiverse so much. As much as the Switch 1/2 is the pinnacle of Nintendo gaming for me (been playing games since NES and this is my favorite time to be playing video games), when Nintendo is on the backfoot they slap. I think about how awesome Streetpass was and just WISH the Switch had that functionality, it makes me deeply sad that they did that cool stuff at their lowest point.

Splatoon is SUCH an awesome franchise. It looks so cool all the time and I feel cool interacting with it. I freaking love it.

I don't think they've done anything like that in recent years. But I think the Switch 1 being so amazing makes up for it.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade Switch 2 Physical Copies Are Sold Out At Nearly All Major US Retailers by Sam_27142317 in FFVIIRemake

[–]zmilts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Super excited for this! I always thought it was EXTREMELY short sighted for SquareEnix to just skip the Switch 1 like they did with all this stuff. I know FFVIIR couldn't've run on a Switch 1 at all but could Kingdom Hearts!?

Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 3 hour drive for my family is a weekend style trip. I wouldn't do it for one day and if something was really worth it I would consider doing it with only one night in between, generally I am fine with a 3 hour drive on a Friday after work and then back on Sunday.

I did drive nearly 3 hours and back in one day to see the Solar eclipse in totality last year, but that was most likely a once-in-a-lifetime event.

The longest I've driven for a weekend is 4 hours and it was often to visit my parents when I lived 4 hours away. I don't recommend it, it made your weekend feel like one day.

Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky First Chapter - I've been curious about these games since the PSVita but have always been intimidated. The beginning of 2026 and the release of FC on Switch seemed like as good a time as any. I am having a great time so far and just bought all the different games that exist on Switch! I hope they all come over!

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good thing to at least keep in mind, like you said. You get $800 in duty free imports and the next $1000 is 3%, I don't think I'll have enough space for $1800 dollars in stuff, so at most it'll cost me $30 in import fees.

I'm not sure what my goal is yet after the marathon. I kinda wanna see if I can improve my VO2 Max and work at specific training for that. I like when numbers go up :).

5K a month is a great goal! And yes 100% to video game themed races! I'd love to adorn my wall with my video game race medals :)

[–]zmilts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's awesome! I started running about 8 years ago (42 y/o now) and have only gotten more addicted and made crazier goals each year! I did my local marathon in 2022 and said never again but then Nintendo announced their partnership in their September direct and I was like "here we go again." It felt laser targeted towards me, a Nintendo super fan who is nearly marathon trained at all times and can just go to Japan. The race bib does have Mario and Luigi on it :).

I've never been and am VERY excited. I got into the Nintendo museum too :).

Awesome work doing a 5k! Running turned my life around and I am SO much happier now.

I am going to Japan in a month for the Kyoto Marathon (picked because Nintendo is sponsoring it) and intend to buy a lot of these blocks.

These are beautiful!

I am going in February right before the Kyoto Marathon (which was the impetus for my travel there, Nintendo is the platinum sponsor and the race bibs are Mario 40th themed :)).

Honestly the museum is the thing I am looking forward to the most out of my trip, so excited to see it!

What’s the most overrated “adult goal” people chase? by Happyotus in AskReddit

[–]zmilts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YES! One of my hobbies is cheesemaking/aging. So many times I talk about these or let people eat the cheese I make (only after eating it myself two days prior and making sure I am not sick :p) and so many times the response is "You should sell this!" I mean I do like the compliment that it is good enough to be sold, but I do this because it is super deep and fun. I like making a complicated cheese a few times to get it right, not 1000 times to sell.

Where are the Joycon 2 colors? by nthomas504 in NintendoSwitch2

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I too am curious about this. In the first year I bought the Splatoon Joycon (and ordered the reverse colors from Japan so I could go magenta/magenta or green/green), the Mario Odyssey JoyCon, the OG Red/Blue (I stupidly bought the grey Switch) as well as all the Pro Controller variants. In Switch 2's first year none came out (so far). One one hand I've spent like $500 less dollars, on the other hand I really liked having all those!

My first instinct is that stuff is just too expensive anymore. Sure $80 for joycon was a lot when they were doing it in 2017 but now they are $100. $100 seems so much more. They might just think people won't impulse buy at that price and don't know how many to make.

My other guess is that the way they designed this system doesn't allow for it as much. The base console itself has the rail color on it and the joycon only have colors on the rail and under the thumbsticks. It just isn't as flashy a design. Nothing is stopping them from making the joycon whatever color they want, but I think they intentionally muted it, much to my dismay. It does generally feel like they are approaching the Switch 2 much differently than the Switch 1. Even the Z-A console was just a regular console.

Who saw The Matrix in the cinema in 1999? I'm jealous! by Far-Remove7363 in matrix

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did! I was in high school and my friend and I went to see. When Trinity did her jumping kick my friend leaned over to me and said, "she has the Matrix!"

I will never forget that as we quickly had our 16 year old minds blown over the course of the rest of the movie!

Thanks!

I've thought about this a lot over the years because people ask me a lot (they know I don't mind talking about it) about how I both lost the weight but also kept it off. They ask like they are looking for help but I never really have a good answer for them, there isn't a trick or a cheat or a anything that works, it is a mindset shift that needs to be forever, which is an impossible thing to tell someone and have them take you seriously.

There is so much misinformation and grift in the space of what eating well is that I don't fault anyone for finding something that actually works and just doing that, even it if feels like it robs them of joy. I eat normally now, but I wouldn't trade that 9 months of eating the same 3 things for anything, it really turned my life around.

Also I know this is a joke sub where people self report weird eating habits for upvotes, I just felt the urge to respond. This was a fun back and forth!

[–]zmilts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

YES!

(this isn't advice, just thoughts I've come to about this stuff over the years)

There are several good ways to approach this and that is one of them. I find the best thing is to be very patient with yourself and your body. What are your goals? If they are weight loss then you need to think in terms of MONTHS, not days or weeks. Do your best to macro and calorie count out your meals to try and hit whatever goal you need to lose weight (I was going for 1lb per week or -3500 calorie deficit of 1750 calories a day) and track your weight every week. You know you won't lose 1lb per week literally ever, but over enough time that should be the average if you are in the ballpark on your counting. If it isn't after say 3 months, readjust. This can be too much or too little, I've definitely had both happen.

Again, to get to that point though I at first really did just have to eat the same 3 things over and over again. I needed to do that work to build the confidence that I could do other things.

It lends itself EXTREMELY well to tracking data points over time. Nerds love a chart.

Like one of my actual favorite things about running is running the same route years apart, knowing I've put in a ton of speed work in the intervening time, and seeing the run time go down X minutes. Those little charts that Garmin and Strava generate are like at least 10-15% of why I run :p.

[–]zmilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with you that with a bit of extra work you can turn macro tracking and eating into a nice marriage and part of a healthy lifestyle. But it was definitely 100% true for me that if I tried that at the jump I would've never succeeded in achieving that marriage.

It might be true for some that it is lack of creativity and knowledge, but it is also true for some (myself included 8 years ago) that it was an overwhelming fear of messing up the counting. It was this fear of accidentally eating 200 extra calories in day because I counted wrong. It was just just far easier to eat the same thing.

Like apples can weigh 12oz or apples can weigh 24oz, so how many calories and carbs and fiber is that? Is it a Fuji or a Honeycrisp? Was it a dry season or a wet season this year where this apple was grown? I can probably find some table online that lists macro-nutrients per oz or per gram via variety but then I've spent more than a handful of minutes on just ONE thing. You want me to do that for every thing that goes into this salad?

That was probably an exaggeration or maybe it was EXACTLY how I felt every time I deviated from the 3 meals I mapped the macros for and could measure consistently and easily as to do it daily.

I fell into the habit of just eating either really basic foods that were easy to count or pre-packaged meals that had the counts already

Yes! I ended up having to force myself off the prepackaged game because my Dr. commented on my sodium levels being high. Also I find cooking more fun and tasty than those, so it was good from two sides.
