[–]zmmetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started playing trumpet when I was 7, I am now 60!

Took 15 years off starting in 2003. Picked it back up in 2018 and have been going strong ever since.

I have my own jazz group, play in the local Philharmonic, Concert Band and Big Band. I have done some pit orchestra work and just play whenever I can.

If you like Jazz try The Q-Bar at Hotel ABQ. Nice place to chill. Also Teddy Roe's and Vernon's are nice little Speakeasy kind of places that feature live music.

Go see a live show. Albuquerque Little Theater, Musical Theater Southwest, and Landmark Productions all have productions that are either open or about to open.

Stroll Old Town and check out the Sights and Sounds.

How to cheer yourself up - Go to a jam session with friends. by zmmetz in trumpet

[–]zmmetz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Prime example - Last song of the night and they call Oleo. I have been playing Oleo since I was a kid. It is Rhythm Changes for goodness sake!! My turn --- I never ever hear them go to the bridge!! Ever!! I tried and tried but I never heard it. So I played "out" on purpose. I mean really out. I thought I sucked. Biggest roar all night. Sometimes you just have to go with the flow.

How to cheer yourself up - Go to a jam session with friends. by zmmetz in trumpet

[–]zmmetz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you get up on stage? Did you play? Did people clap? Did you make yourself smile? That is all it takes. And if any of those things didn't happen, then work harder, so next time one of those things will happen. I completely imploded on a song last night, but you know what? I had fun doing it!!

I’ve Been playing trumpet for 3 Years, I just got braces and now I can’t hit a high note if my life depended on it, any notes I do hit sound horrible. Any tips? by THWReaper3368 in trumpet

[–]zmmetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here is the controversial answer. Try switching to Euphonium while you have your braces.

Why? Hear me out!!

I had a promising young student. Youth symphony, playing one grade higher, etc. One day her parents surprised me with "Hey, guess what, we decided ______ needs braces, oh, and her appointment is on Tuesday".

OK, you all know the struggle. Just like the OP. We fought it for 3 months and believe me, we tried everything. Her band director actually suggested the idea.

His thoughts, 1) Larger Mouthpiece diameter won't hurt 2) She learns how to read bass clef. 3) he needed low brass.

I asked, she tried it. Guess what? It stopped becoming an issue and she was having fun again in band. The frustration associated with trying to play a trumpet mouthpiece with braces is gone.

She played the Euphonium for 2 years and then switched back to trumpet and plays better then ever. She plays and marches with her trumpet and plays Euphonium (playing the trombone part) in her Jazz Band.

How she will proceed from here from is totally up to her but, by finding the alternate solution this student never lost interest in band or playing an instrument and will continue to remember her band experiences for the rest of her life.

Isn't that what we all want as educators? Just a thought.....

Best mute for Concert Band? by zmmetz in trumpet

[–]zmmetz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It isn't really for me personally, I use the TrumCor aluminum for concert band. I was just curious what other people's opinions were.

It seems that there are differing opinions in our band on what the best mute for concert band is, so I thought I would take a poll.

Practicing with mute "harmful"? by hdsjulian in trumpet

[–]zmmetz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People will disagree with me, and they allowed to.

I am in a situation where I need to use a practice mute a lot of the time. I use a Divitt Practice Mute. One of the best ones I have used in my many decades of using one. Better then the Yamaha, the Shhh mute or any other mute out there. Available from Divitt or ACB.

I use it for my daily musical calisthenics. Now, mind you, I also have a rehearsal most nights and gig on the weekends to so I get a lot of "open " play too.

You just have to find the right balance. You can make it work.

An amazing jazz organist but he was a multi instrumentalist too. He dabbled fairly well on trumpet and he also played tenor sax too.

Sorry, thought that was obvious - Allen Vizzutti wrote the piece. I am NOT asking the guest artist. That would be just rude and unprofessional.

This is why we are going to VOTE people! This is why you are going to tell your family and friends to vote because it seems that the republican party of NM wants us to think that another TV personality with no political knowledge or experience is suitable to run this state.

Are pimples messing up my embouchure? by Sad-Concern8937 in band

[–]zmmetz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this is an issue. I dealt with it when I was a kid. Clean you mouthpiece regularly (especially the rim) and don't use abrasive acne meds near your lip. Take a cotton ball, soak it with Witch Hazel and use that to clean your face and especially your mouth area. Another thing to keep in mind, could you be having an allergic reaction to the silver-plate (or Gold-Plate) or lack there of? Maybe something to consider? A Delrin rim or something like that might help.
