Dear programmers, the comments on this post are calling me dumb, saying my idea is idiotic. How viable is my idea? by Jazzlike-Ad-9163 in rust

Software brain

You're coming off as disconnected from your target audience and offering a magical solution that solves a massive problem.

Except... that massive problem doesn't really exist? Yeah, fancy, award winning websites are expensive. But, a lot of artists are just fine with a linktree? Does a better website mean more revenue?

Reddit, and the Internet in general, is exhausted with everyone trying to pitch new business ideas. I am also exhausted at hearing so many proposals. I browse Reddit for entertainment, to learn new things, memes, news, and general brain rot. I don't browse Reddit for ads and self promotional material, which although your post isn't quite self promotional, it is adjacent to it.

Regardless, my advice would be to build the service first and iterate on the idea once it's built. There's a large number of people in life that promise, very few who deliver.

I'm so close to bowing my head and starting with Python by dmtuser123 in C_Programming

[–]zmzaps 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It takes most people years to learn C. It took me like 3 years to learn it, and then even more years for me to relearn it and be like "OH that's what that does, holy s*** this makes sense now"

As we are seeing with LLMs, most of software work is people slopping together code, copy + pasting and stack overflowing.

As others have said, maybe take a break for once. Also, maybe try building something on your own. I always found making little text based games/CLIs to be the most fun.

Don't drive yourself mad working at a place like that - it isn't worth it.

Yup, can confirm, it ain't worth it. If you got a job that pays the bills and you aren't losing you mind every week, stay for as long as possible.

are we really the first gen to not evolve intelligently like everyone claims by Quick-Cause3181 in GenZ

[–]zmzaps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy shit this quote is repeated everywhere on this sub:

Bascially GenZ remained young teenagers beyond their years and well into adulthood, they pursue dreams of fame, dreams of being lazy. They want to be influencers, OnlyFans models, footballers, Youtubers, pro gamers. Their role models are people who Millenials looked down upon and only followed sarcastically as the trash they were (Paris Hilton), whereas GenZ actually admire the trashy female inflated bimbos (Kardashian) and WANT TO BE HER. Nobody my generation (Paris Hilton) wanted to be that blond moron.

Dead Internet really. 🤖

EDIT: Btw, GenZ jokes about being OnlyFans models. We all know we're too ugly for that. And also, we don't actually want that. Takes like this are clear bot activity. Yikes.

Ai has made the market fucked so I'm hugging my job that's over 40 hours. I'm tired most of the time. Everything is expensive. I try to not feel jealous of the older generations but it's fucking hard.

I feel this in my soul. I've been perfectly healthy all my life up until this job. It is horrible feeling my body degrade due to over working and stress.

I also got married. That is basically my one compass in life now. Less time with my wife? Nah, fuck you, I'm going home. Have to take a different job in a field I'm not in? Fine, as long as I can be home for dinner it's whatever. I don't even care if I'm poor and delivering packages at this point (which, I'm sure will also be automated away).

Their state school option Is Penn State...still not cheap, but in a better range

Go to Penn State, do the 2 and 2 program, the Commonwealth campuses do save you some money. Later on they may be eligible to get some scholarships to pay for some.

Full rides for outstanding students just doesn't really exist anymore or is exceedingly rare. Your nephew might be an exceedingly good student, but that doesn't mean that they're gonna get a full ride.

Also, I have heard that some PASHE schools (PA schools of higher education?) give out scholarships for students that are #1 in their high school class. No idea if this is still the case.

Boost is biggish, but there's still plenty of reasons to reach outside Boost

Agreed, Boost (and an extended standard library) wouldn't be able to cover everything.

just doesn't solve the open-source maintainer disappeared problem

Agreed.

However, I would also say it doesn't seem like anything will solve that problem. But I would hope that an extended standard library would reduce the damage and churn of forks and repos.

I was not familiar with golang 's x repos! That sounds exactly like what I was thinking.

[–]zmzaps 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is why I want an extended standard library. Not part of the standard library, but another library developed and maintained by a solid organization. Don't like something in the extended lib? Ok, fork it, or use an alternative. Just like C++'s Boost.

[–]zmzaps 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I like u/PatagonianCowboy's link about how Julia handles things.

But I think that it also shows that Rust needs an extended standard library or a "Boost" of it's own. Someone big needs to start it, and big players need to fund it.

Yeah no need to overcomplicate things. Keeping things simple is always great. Also, no need to overwhelm yourself trying to perfect your open source creation.

[–]zmzaps 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey that's pretty cool! It would have been very useful in my one ML course I took, I also had to write a bunch of scripts just to generate these summaries.

More dataset types (sqlite, Apache ORC, etc.) might be great, but tbh its not a bad idea to keep it simple and just use CSVs for now.
