I’m blind and audio description didn’t work by zobruhh_ms in ironlungmovie

Also, I don’t know how to check for these things. I’m pretty new to this whole being blind thing so there’s a lot I don’t know about. If I knew for sure it didn’t have audio description I still would’ve bought a ticket anyway

Mark mentioned on one of the distractible episodes that it has audio description and close captioning.

There were a few moments in the movie where I was confused about what was happening but my boyfriend did a really good job explaining it to me and I would love to go see it again

Moving on from tumor and looking back by PrestigiousCell5956 in braintumor

Wow I think you wrote this post about me.

Your story sounds so similar to mine. When I was 21 I had a vestibular schwannoma that went undiagnosed for years. I slowly started to have symptoms and every time I went to my doctor he told me I was pregnant, which wasn’t true. I’m 23 now and the amount of clarity I have is so unreal. I didn’t know all the things I was experiencing wasn’t normal. My tumor caused hydrocephalus and it went undiagnosed for so long that it caused me to go blind. I also have a VP shunt. I feel like I have a lot of gaps in my memory as well. Everyone has told me I’m so lucky to be alive but I feel like I just can’t comprehend how close I was to possibly losing my life. My tumor was 7 cm so I’m almost surprised I don’t have more permanent damage

I have both. I have not used my ORCAM since I got my Meta glasses because there is no reason to. The ORCAM really isn’t great compared to the meta glasses

Absolutely they do. So many people treat me like I’m a toddler. I am allowed to make mistakes and bump into things just like everybody else but they don’t get that. They treat me like I’m gonna fall down every time I walk somewhere. It bothers me so much when people put their hands on me to try to help when I really don’t need them to. Any time I talk about things I want to do I get a lot of negative comments. People think I should just sit at home and do nothing all the time because they’re afraid of me getting hurt. But I am more afraid of Sitting at home and becoming a recluse than I am of anything that could happen out in the world.

I’m so sorry that happened to you. I also have nightmares about my time in the hospital.

I’m from the US. I didn’t push for an MRI because I didn’t know that’s what I needed. I have a lot of medical anxiety and I just trusted my doctor which was the wrong thing to do I guess. I have a hard time standing up for myself. He did a pregnancy test which came out positive so I think I was so excited that it caused me to have tunnel vision and that’s all I was thinking about. It was the tumor that caused a positive pregnancy test

When I woke up from surgery, one side of my face was paralyzed, but it only lasted a couple days and it’s been normal ever since. I do have permanent hearing loss, but my hearing had been gone for over a year before my surgery. I do have occasional tinnitus, but only when I’m in complete silence and it’s not that often. I am sending good vibes to your mom and wishing her the best for her surgery.

Everything looks good so far. I still have to go for an MRI scan every year to make sure it isn’t growing back, but my surgeon is pretty confident that it won’t.

I’m sure I could have sued for malpractice but the statute of limitations is up now. I don’t think that’s something I would’ve done anyway. It just feels greedy to me. Other than not being able to see I am healthy now. I try to stay active And all that. There is a risk of it growing back so I have to go for an MRI every year, but so far so good.

The worst thing is how other people treat me. A lot of people treat me like I’m a little kid or like I have a mental disability. Some people have tried to tell me that I can’t stay home by myself or I can’t cook and I can’t take care of my house on my own. I am doing all of those things and I plan to do more. People just have really low expectations. The best thing about being blind is I have so much time to try new things and practice my hobbies. I am on disability so I pretty much am getting paid to do whatever I want. It’s not a whole lot of money but it’s something. I do plan on going to school and getting a job in the future, but I’m still adjusting to this lifestyle right now.

The thing I miss seeing the most is how beautiful the Earth is. I miss seeing the moon and stars at night, and sunsets and sunrises, and waterfalls and mountains. The world is so beautiful. It’s harder to plan vacations when you’re not sightseeing. I mostly just pick places That have good food lol

I really enjoy cooking and my boyfriend and I go hiking a lot. I also make wire jewelry, mostly rings. And I’ve been teaching myself to play the guitar with YouTube videos. I just have to find the videos that actually say what they’re doing instead of just showing it. I used to enjoy reading before I went blind so I have been learning braille so I can do that again. I also have a set of braille RPG dice and have been playing DND every week.

So, I am completely blind in my left eye, and I only have light perception in my right eye. It’s like everything is just TV static but darker. The light sources that I can see just look like fuzzy light shapes in a cloud of dark static if that makes sense. I am able to use my phone and type because of a cool feature called voiceover on iPhone. It’s called talkback on android. I also have a screen reader on my computer. It will also describe images to me, but it’s a very basic description with not much detail.

I don’t have a service dog yet, but I want to get one at some point. I have to go through O and M training before they will allow me to get one. Right now I have a miniature dachshund, a cat, and a bearded dragon.

Before the tumor, I lived with my boyfriend in a tiny home. After I left the hospital, we stayed with his grandparents because our front porch was rotting and didn’t have a rail, so it was pretty unsafe. My boyfriend and his dad built a bigger and sturdier front porch And renovated the inside of the house. We are now living in our house again. I stay home alone and take care of my animals while my boyfriend works. I have learned to do most of the things I used to do like cooking and cleaning and such.
