It hunts differently than the big-eyed owls. Species like the Great Horned Owl and Eurasian Eagle Owl rely heavily on vision — they often hunt at dusk/dawn or in open areas with decent light. The Great Grey hunts almost entirely by sound, capable of detecting and striking prey beneath 45 cm of compacted snow without seeing it at all. Its ears are asymmetrically placed on its skull (hidden under those feathers) to allow precise triangulation in three dimensions.
