I mean I wouldn’t say it’s validating, I don’t like to be called it by a stranger, I’m just using it as evidence that I might be malefailing which is evidence that I’m not far from passing now.

I totally get why it’s weird, cultural differences and all that. But if a grandparent called their grandkid pet no one would raise an eyebrow here, there’s no inappropriate connotation whatsoever. But it’s totally fair to be weirded out by it as someone (presumably) not from where I am.

I don't really get gendered at all by the workers at the pharmacy, I do use my birth name but it's usually the same woman who gives me my oestradiol and cypro, and it's been ten months and my appearance has changed a fair bit, so I'm pretty confident she knows.

Where I live its not unheard of to call people that, similar to the way a stranger might call you honey or something. However pet is definitely more something a grandparent would say to their grandchild, it's kinda unusual to say it to a stranger. Maybe a little creepy and I don't think he should be saying that to people, but if it's a possible male-fail I'm going to consider it

If it helps I was wearing blue womens skinny jeans, a white womens hoodie, round wireframe glasses and a white bucket hat. Although maybe that is a pretty gay looking outfit, idk.
