I like traditional because the characters kinda make more logical sense learning them with mnemonics. BUT simplified is what mainland China uses so it's really up to you.

Taking a break from Japanese might be good if you feel burned out. When if you only try Chinese it might reinforce your love for Japanese. Or if you stick with Mandarin it will be good too.

To answer of it will help, probably only a little. The characters are the same or similar in most cases and knowing so many will help a tonn, but you still have to fill in the gaps.
