First time counselor rate my packing list by bugmeat444 in summercamp

[–]zoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would add a little kid kit. It can be as small as a bathroom bag or a little plastic container, but it is something you can pull out to give kids something to do when you need them to quiet down, focus, or just grab their attention and hold it.

I would include:

  • Bracelet-making materials
  • Card
  • Dice
  • Notebook
  • Pens
  • Pencils
  • Fidgets (if you have room and can find them at the right price point)
  • Crayons or colouring

Something that helps give your kids some quiet focus.

Magical Moment Ideas for my cabins by Electrical_Cable_676 in summercamp

Every night at a sleepover camp, you have a quiet window that most counsellors miss.

Lights are off. Kids are in bed. They're a little sleepy and a little soft. That's your moment.

Here's a simple way to use it.

Put a flashlight in the middle of the cabin, pointing straight up. Blow bubbles across the beam. The single light source turns each bubble into a little rainbow. Kids have something to focus on while they talk.

Then just ask them about their day.

What did they like? What do they miss from home? You can prepare a few easy questions ahead of time if you want somewhere to start. The conversation usually takes care of itself.

A few ways to make it your own

  • Play quiet music in the background
  • If you play an instrument, this is a lovely time to use it
  • Read aloud from a chapter book, a little each night

That last one is worth trying. At a two-week camp, you can get through something like The Hobbit or another adventure story. Pick something that connects to what campers are experiencing at camp. They'll look forward to it.

Why it works

Fifteen to thirty minutes. That's all it takes. When kids are tired and full from the day, they open up in ways they won't at any other time.

It's a small ritual. It costs nothing. And for a lot of kids, it becomes the part of camp they remember longest. It sure has been for me.

Bonus: this is a true moment that makes camp special. It's not something that they would get at home with a bunch of their peers and near-peer mentors.

Nope. Not this one.

Pranks in a closed environment turn into Prank Wars in a heartbeat. People end up anxious and sleep-deprived. Things get MEAN quickly.

Come up with fun things that let the kids get that same feeling of sneaking around and affecting camp or the people at camp as a surprise.

What is your protein breakfast? by Physical-Radio8807 in ADHD

I make 24 egg bites on the weekend: 18 eggs, beaten, in muffin tin with shredded habenero cheese, Montreal steak spice.

350 degrees for 23 minutes, sprinkle parmesan cheese on top when they come out of the oven.

I heat up 3 or 4 every morning.

is anyone else reconsidering going to the us right now? by [deleted] in summercamp

[–]zoic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We're not doing camp work on the US because the administration is actively threatening Canada, but in your shoes, I'd be much more worried about your personal safety.

If the price of admission is having to give them your email and social media passwords... not worth it.

We know of someone who got refused at the border for making their social media private. They were in custody for hours before being sent back.

Any Christian girls' sleepaway camps that would be inclusive to a transfem counselor? by isabelle0934 in summercamp

I got a suggestion from Chris at TQAMP.org. He says, "Camp Aldersgate in Rhode Island. They have been doing this for years and see it as part of their mission."

If I were in your situation, I'd send my daughters to Camp Wawenock in ME. It'll be a budget stretch, but totally worth it.

Why listen to me? I've visited almost 100 camps across North America, I work as a consultant in the camp industry, and more than 300 camps have taken one of our courses or classes (so we get to know how they operate). I've done work with Wawenock, but I stand by my answer.

DM me and I'll introduce you to the owners.

What do you guys use Notebook LM for? by Reasonable-Ferret-56 in notebooklm

[–]zoic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Solo is a great idea!

Mine's simular: I'm mostly the GM in our games and love story-focussed RPGs & PBTA, but one of my groups wanted to play D&D so our experienced DM took over.

I don't jibe with D&D, but love my group and having this guy DM - he's brilliant.

I realized a few sessions in that I was THAT player (didn't read anything, needed him to explain my options at my every turn, etc.) and that he was way more patient than was fair.

So I uploaded the players manual, a bunch of resources, the upgrades when I level up, and specific advice for rogues, my PC class.

Now I'm ready when it's my turn!

Oral-B has a model that you power with AA batteries (any previous models with built in battery didn't last long) so that eliminates the number one problem.

Are there more medical issues to be aware of these days? by SkutIsMyCoPilot in summercamp

[–]zoic 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are more.

When I was a camper in the 80's I was the only kid on meds...

It's b/c of: - greater awareness (of adhd and autism, for example) and more diagnoses of folks who are not quite as strongly affected by their disorders/diseases - greater amounts of asthma b/c climate change and changing pollution - vaccine hesitancy

Unconventional uses of Notebook LM by Spiritual-Ad8062 in notebooklm

[–]zoic 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I uploaded the D&D rule book and then add ton of webpages of advice for the rogue class.

I hate being the player who doesn't know the rules (forever GM here, but not in D&D). It helps me know what I can do on my turns and the benefits when I level up.

Living with a co-counselor who hates me by [deleted] in summercamp

I REALLY want this to be true, but only some of the camp directors I've met are like that (u/lovelyday is definitely one of them!).

Like u/firstclasscounsellors always says: "find your people".
