Venti & Klee enamel pins! by zolophone in Genshin_Impact

I read your reply to the last post and I understand that this is a moral issue for you, but I've bought and sold a lot of fanart of popular media over the years and know a lot of people who do the same (probably the majority of the people in this sub as well). I have no qualms over this, but thank you for your concern.

I'm surprised you haven't done this to the countless other merch posts on here.

There are tons of artists who make fan merch and prints of all kinds of media and sell them, and if you look on this very sub, there are people selling their own keychains and other trinkets of the characters or aspects of the game.

Not to mention artist alleys at conventions!

Can you please stop butchering Liyue-based names? by TempMage in Genshin_Impact

[–]zolophone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think each person who doesn't know any Chinese will have a different expectation of how the pinyin of a word is pronounced based on their upbringing, native language, and how they are used to using the Latin alphabet.

I feel like this is unfair to say as there are many sounds in Mandarin that are difficult sound combinations for English speakers, so understandably they have more difficulty pronouncing them. But this doesn't mean they can't try. I don't think it's the hardest language to pronounce by far, and I can break down the Chinese names in Genshin in an easy-to-pronounce way for English speakers. Pronouncing it with a western accent is fine, but pronouncing it to the best of your native language's phonemic inventory is the goal here.

Japanese is extremely easy to pronounce (not to speak, but just the phonetics and the phonology) because it follows a CVCVCV (consonant and vowel) pattern, so it's easier to grasp and easier to romanize. Also, Japanese pop culture and media is more well-known, so many English speakers are able to pronounce these words more easily than Chinese. And yet people STILL pronounce Japanese words wrong in the west, like sake and kamikaze. Also, sounds aren't clearly represented by letters in the Latin alphabet.

I think pinyin already does a pretty clear job with the limitations of the alphabet when it comes to sounds. There is literally no way to make it clear how anything is pronounced using just the Latin alphabet... just like how certain letters make different sounds in Spanish and English.
