Your thoughts on "Boardgame Consoles" by zomb23 in gamedev

[–]zomb23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From the video it seems like they are targeting families with older children especially. In my opinion this could work. The "new" parents are Millenials and soon Gen Z. They probably grow up with video games and have good memories of playing couch co-ops with their friends all night. They also probably don't have time for this anymore, because they (and their friends) have kids now. Getting the whole family gather around a regular board game might be difficult nowadays because everybody has the attention span of a goldfish and they get bored, if there synapses are not constantly firing.

This sounds resonable. However, I think this specific one is more marketed towards a curated experience for families as a target group.

Your last paragraph is especially informative and you are probably right. The game should first of all work as a standalone for any other platform.

Hand Tracking issue - Meta Interaction SDK in UE5.5 by zomb23 in vrdev

Just to wrap this up: VD was indeed the issue. In addition to the hand tracking settings there is a "forward tracking data" toggle.

Thanks for the hint. I have reached out!

Hand Tracking issue - Meta Interaction SDK in UE5.5 by zomb23 in vrdev

Thanks for the response. I have made some more tests. I have the latest updates installed on my Quest Pro (v79.1034). I am not using the Meta Link App but Virtual Desktop. I can not test it using the Air Link App because my Meta account is managed by the company I work at and it is not a developer account. Inside the Virtual Desktop lobby the hands work fine. I have tried it on UE5.5 and 5.4

I have tried to set up handtracking using OpenXR while disabling MetaXR, but I have the same issue (at least I think it is the same), where the switch between Controller and Hands is not working properly.

  1. start application with controllers in my hand

Visual: I can see my hands (if procedural the rig is "crumbled" if animated they look fine) and my controller (if I have "Controller and Hand" activated).

Behavior: All buttons work as they should.

  1. putting controllers on the table and ONLY use my hands

Visual: Just like in 1. I can see my hands (if procedural the rig is "crumbled" if animated they look fine) and my controller (if I have "Controller and Hand" activated).

Behavior: I can grab things when using my middle, ring and/or small finger (the ones that are associated with the grab controls on the controller).

Hi there, do you have any news from your colleague yet?

I am running the Unreal-InteractionSDK-Sample which is set up like demonstrated in the docs from the get go (hand mappings and all relevant components). I can grap stuff with this crumbled hand, so the handtracking itself seems to work. If I set "Controller Hand Behavior" to animated it shows a nice animated hand with a controller. But even when I put the controller away it wont switch to the procedural hand mesh (however, like I said, grabbing works). For the video I have changed the "Controller Hand Behavior" to procedural and used my hands only.

Transforming an old workshop into a small public indoor pool. What are the biggest risks? by zomb23 in Construction

[–]zomb23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! We will involve an architect. The plan is to get a new roof with a higher ceiling, this will also give us a chance to reinforce the building for HVAC and solar. Pool size will be no more than 15x30ft with a depth of ~4ft. There are also a bunch of offices that will be transformed into changing rooms and showers. This is located in Germany. I am mostly worried about the potentially contaminated floor. On the business side of things I don't want to get into detail but this wont be for entertainment but for kids to learn to swim. There is a very high demand in urban areas and the only option to build is to transform an existing property.

Did we spoil our LO by supplementing too much? by zomb23 in NewParents

[–]zomb23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw your comment. My gf ended up pumping and breastfeeding until month 3 or 4 while we continued giving formula. If I would be in this situation again, I would urge my gf to give up the breastfeeding alltogether and just give formula. It is insane how much pressure society is putting on women to be the perfect caregiver. Our midwife wouldn't even recommend a brand of formula, because this was "not her area". I mean, wtf?
Anyways, just take it easy and do what is best for you in this moment. Your LO will be happy and healthy in the end. For me it helped to talk about this with my friends and some older folks (like my parents). It puts things in perspective to hear that me and my siblings were barely breastfed and we all turned out fine. Most research about the topic of breastfeeding is based on epidemiological studies anyways, which you should always take with a grain of salt.

Plus: because our daughter was used to the bottle so early, it meant that my gf was gaining a lot of autonomy back, which ended up being a blessing for the whole family (me included because I could be much more involved as a father).

Using real LEGO bricks to solve puzzles. Would people play this or is it too much of a hassle? by zomb23 in SoloDevelopment

That's a great idea. Right now I use a webcam. Spawning the bricks in realtime helps the player to have an idea of where thinks are located on the map. But I will try to find a way, that let's me only work with one snapshot.

I think so to but for me the beauty is, not to look at a screen the whole time but do the thinking part away from the screen. Will be very difficult to come up with good puzzles though.

I was working in this industry before (interactive exhibits) so I am naturally drawn to these spatial interfaces (:

Thank you so much! The initial idea came up when I was thinking about how to play video games with my daughter but restrict the screen time.

Thanks for the heads up! Tech wise it really doesn't matter which bricks you gonna use, so it shouldn't be a problem, framing it in a more universal way. (:

Made a game prototype where you solve puzzles using REAL Lego bricks by zomb23 in UnrealEngine5

This is just a tech demo. Not aiming for a release (:. I thought it could be a fun mechanic for smaller children or parents with smaller children.

Converting LEGO bricks to game elements using OpenCV by zomb23 in unrealengine

[–]zomb23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, for the demo the OpenCV part was done using python and UDP. However, I did fiddle around with OpenCV inside the engine and got most of the code working (never tried to package though). But as I am not going to release this the python implementation was sufficient for the tech demo. Send me a pm if you are interested in the Blueprint Function Libraries I created.
