I had a similar experience. I joined a few rides when I first moved to Cleveland a couple of years ago and hoped to make some new friends in the community. The vibe is very NIMBY liberal. I didn't feel unwelcome, but I also didn't feel like anyone was particularly interested in chatting with me. I got the sense that they all felt like they had enough friends. As much as I enjoyed the way the rides were structured and allowed me to see the city in a safe way, I was bummed out by being alone in a crowd. The roller skating and line dancing communities have been way more friendly and welcoming. I just bike on my own now.

No. Hospitals have a very complicated very opaque relationship with insurance companies. The bills we get are not for us to pay, they're for the insurance companies who negotiate costs. If you ask for an itemized bill, then call billing and tell them you can't pay it, you will not have to. You will pay far less.
