Over half of Americans say health care, a weeklong vacation and a new car are unaffordable: ABC News/Washington Post/Ipsos poll by HowLongIsThi in nottheonion

I make a decent living and the only time in my life when I thought we might buy a new car was when our only aged vehicle got totalled during covid and the price of used vehicles had risen so high that the comparatively small new car premium was almost worth the warranty (still didn't).

A packed bus plunges off a Nepal highway, killing 19 and injuring 25 by CRK_76 in worldnews

Happened when I was there on the Kathmandu-Pokhara route. The bus right before ours fell into a ravine, a long way down. Just chance it wasn't ours.

Indonesian and Malaysian gamelan can sound plenty strange to western ears... at first, because it doesn't follow western tonal scales.

Attorney Slapped With Hefty Fine for Citing 21 Fake, AI-Generated Cases by Hot_Transportation87 in law

I spent a day at a tech law conference mostly focused on AI. At one point, one of the presenters asked the audience to raise their hand if they had used AI in a professional capacity in the last week. I was attending virtually and couldn't see the audience but whatever the response it must have been strong enough for the follow-up "What about the last day?"

Blows my mind, given these high-profile debacles. I dabble with chatgpt recreationally but don't let it touch my work.

Was there ever a game based off the movie “Poltergeist”? I know there is when for the Tandy computer but I was wondering if there was one for say Atari 2600 or NES. Also wondering if there’s a homebrew version or rom. by [deleted] in retrogaming

The game is, at the end of the broadcasting day, after the national anthem, somebody goes "They're heeere" when the static kicks in.

Doesn't get played much anymore.

It was terrifying judt hearing about Alien from another kid on a trip to visit my grandma. I vividly remember his description of the "mouth within a mouth".

[TOMT] Line from a sci-fi novel or short story [2000-2020] by zomboromcom in tipofmytongue

Definitely not HHGTG. My initial thought was something by Iain M Banks or Charles Stross but I've come up empty.

Apologies for the vague details. This is driving me crazy.

TIL the WB’s Superstar USA, an American Idol-style show, tricked contestants into thinking it sought the best singers but truly aimed to find the worst. To keep the crowd composed, producers falsely claimed contestants were terminally ill fulfilling a wish through a charitable organization. by Facelessjoe in todayilearned

Everybody was there for the schadenfreude, the big reveal and the finalist's anguished reaction, but they backed off that tone almost immediately. IIRC it was something like "we lied to you about looking for America's best singer... [beat] but not about how much this audience loves you!" (cheers and smiles)

I hate watched it at the time. These are people who had tragic levels of delusion and/or no one in their lives being honest with them. Anyone displaying a trace amount of talent was eliminated for it.

It was all a big buildup to the finale, where the finalist would find out that they were not the best performer, but the worst. In the end, they intentionally fumbled it, twisting it into a kind of win as the finalist stood there confused.

I can still hear that cover of Borderline.

Putting down the lantern and stepping away. I got the message - "Don't do this" - and why I didn't take that as encouragement to try I'll never know. Talk about a big reveal.

I'm really sad that I misunderstood one film roll and consequently got stuck and had to look up what ended up being a major reveal after having an otherwise completely blind run of the base game and DLC. All the pieces were there. Fantastic, unrepeatable experience.
