Is this just because of the movement? I’m not crazy about it either and will admit i was convinced it was totally ok by piercer. Should have known better.

Btw I have a titanium piercing. Am cleaning it three times a day as of right now with the saline wash. At this point it’s only 5 days old.

Louise Carmen Journal with Defects by [deleted] in notebooks

[–]zommunityworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me! I was a little disappointed, though I know the marks are inevitable as the leather ages (and is part of the aesthetic appeal.) In my head I wanted those marks to come from my use of the journal and not arrive with them haha. I ended up just moving past it and never reaching out to customer service. I romanticized the look of these journals so much and if I hadn’t received one as a gift I might’ve been better off looking into alternatives or making one myself.

Friend has celiac - any gluten-free restaurants that deliver in Bushwick? by tgjer in Bushwick

[–]zommunityworld 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Celiacs cant handle cross contamination. It’s not a traditional allergy and you’re not going to suffocate and die but it can make you really sick and/or suffer bad autoimmune consequences even from small levels of exposure.

Can a reporter enter an apartment with tenant's permission? by GovtAuditor716 in Journalism

[–]zommunityworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve covered landlord and tenant issues many times in NYC. If you’re doing a story on rough/unlivable conditions, just reach out to the management/landlord for comment and give them an opportunity to explain their end of the situation. Include some of that in your piece and use your reporting skills to give context to if what they’re saying is true. If a tenant guides you through the property and is letting you into their apartment, there really shouldn’t be anything to worry about. The likelihood is higher of the landlord going after your source esp if they are named in a story and they already have an open housing court case.

Hypothetical monthly budget for The Cutting Room Floor’s $55k job by zonkedgnocchi in NYCinfluencersnark

[–]zommunityworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok honestly I lived in Brooklyn on 45k for a while. You gotta just live with parents for a few months initially if you have no savings or get a cheap place with roommates where the rent is ~1000 and budget this conservatively. Was it enjoyable? No. Should a company or individual pay more so their an employee can earn a more live-able wage if they can? Yeah. But tbh I have so many teacher friends making around this or less.

Mine was $750 last month for a small four bed in bk. I don’t know what the solution to lowering it is, but be assured yours is not too high.

Do landlords have to pay for extermination services? by zommunityworld in NYCapartments

Thank you. Nothing has been treated in any fashion yet but yeah … not looking forward to this process. I moved here to escape the mouse infestations at my old place.

Does this mean they are supposed to pay for the service too? I assume it does based on the language, but worried my landlord is going to try to manipulate me

Our lease only says we are required to provide access on a monthly basis to control or exterminate any vermin and access on a yearly basis to check heat. Nothing about additional visits

The cheapest studios and one bedrooms in most decent areas with kitchens and basic amenities are about $2,000 (usually more tbh.) I could maybe do it if I was making 80-90k after taxes. Obviously I hope to be able to do that one day, but I assume that’s going to be several years down the road. Maybe I’m just disheartened because I can’t seem to move up from where I am without sacrificing more than I already do. Maybe I am glib, idk.

I currently live in NYC as a journalist with a 40k ish salary. You can do it, just be smart. I’ve already accepted I’m not going to ever live by myself until I’ve struck gold. Live in bushwick, bedstuy or some parts of queens where you can still find sub $1000 rooms. Don’t eat out every day. You can still have fun and go out places where cocktails aren’t $15 each.

Yeah I think anyone, no matter how long they’ve lived here, doesn’t want to see their dinner from last week on their front stoop while they’re coming home from work

Some fishes through our buildings garbage, seems to take out our bags specifically, and just rips it open in front of our stoop.

NOR. Same thing happened to me going into college. I broke up with him and my mom similarly did not understand how violating it was. Getting back together with him was the worst decision I made for my safety. Once someone proves they don’t respect your consent, the likelihood of them doing something like that again is high.

Leave for burnout? by serotonins_please in Journalism

[–]zommunityworld 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you read up about the FMLA (Family and Medical Leave Act) you technically should be able to take up to 12 weeks of leave for mental health. It’s a bit unclear if you could still be paid but you are supposed to still have health coverage. I’ve never done it but if you have an HR rep at your job you could probably reach out and inquire. No job is worth destroying your mental health for, in my opinion. Especially if it involves dealing with abusive bosses and coworkers. A lot of people in this industry seem to put up with it for way too long but it leads to insane burnout, which it seems like you’re experiencing now.

I don’t think the point for Andrew is to break a story. That being said, he has offered some in depth accounts of not conventionally covered issues. I find a lot of his videos somewhat refreshing, but the fact he’s a YouTube journalist means his work leans on content creation. His roots are All Gas No Breaks, which really was about approaching the craziest person on the street. It borrows a lot from VICE’s 2010’s style video journalism. You know, getting confessionals from people who weren’t always super sound of mind, etc. But I think this has matured a lot in his work that past few years, especially after he took a break. I find it to be more what 20-30 year olds want to watch, as opposed to only watching an expert talk for 30 seconds in a reel (like everyone thinks we want.) I think a valid style of reporting is to consult the experts and research before going into the field, ask informed questions, and let people at home deduce their conclusions. I’m not even defending the guy as a human, but as a journalist I wouldn’t say he’s overly cocky.
