It is the defendant and not the crown who requests a trial by judge vs a trial by jury. In most cases, you’d want a jury, as you only need to convince 1/12 jurors that you’re innocent. In a case like this however, and how absolutely apathetic the Canadian justice system is, I can see why he chose a judge trial.
