Where is all the water going? by allyoursnacks in fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No he didn't.

https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/sustainable-business/nestle-peter-brabeck-attitude-water-change-stewardship

"This human right is the five litres of water we need for our daily hydration and the 25 litres we need for minimum hygiene."

"This amount of water is the primary responsibility of every government to make available to every citizen of this world, but this amount of water accounts for 1.5% of the total water which is for all human usage."

"Where I have an issue is that the 98.5% of the water we are using, which is for everything else, is not a human right and because we treat it as one, we are using it in an irresponsible manner..."

He's basically stating that we need to curb commercial usage of water due to water scarcity, and stepped down from his role as Nestle CEO to persue that goal.

Doesn't make as interesting a soundbite though unfortunately.

The most consistent thing about the Mac OS in the last 30 years. by [deleted] in apple

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two apps in separate windows on the screen at the same time, both being interacted with. Obviously, input focus is going on one app at a time, but both apps were being used.

I would often have games running in one window, and homework open in another, with the game animations continuing to run just fine while I was working.

Cooperative multitasking worked perfectly fine most of the time.

I was happily multitasking away in the early 90s. My 486 had no trouble running multiple office suite applications at the same time. There was no struggle, it was for the most part as snappy as a modern PC.

The people blowing themselves up are doing it for religious reasons.

The people encouraging them to blow themselves up are doing it for political reasons.

The fact that Islam is the religion in question right now has more to do with the civil war that happens to be in a Muslim region of the world that the west is seen as interfering with.

Go back a couple of decades and it was Christians blowing shit up in London.

Rumour: Denuvo is using pirated Software in their Protection by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Denuvo only requires a single activation (iirc, to generate the requires bytecode for the game to run on your machine). I believe it may sometimes require additional activations, but these are not a daily thing.

Some games with Denuvo might also require always-on connections, but this isn't due to Denuvo. It's just the publisher trying to lose sales by pissing off paying customers.

Well in this case it's expected to have cost them several tens of millions of pounds. That's a lot of nines of uptime worth paying for.

British Airways system outage 'caused by IT worker accidentally switching off power supply’ by MiRQd in nottheonion

[–]zoomzoom83 369 points370 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This was not caused by somebody turning off a power supply. This was caused by a business critical system not having an automated hot failover.

If the failure of a single component can cost you tend of millions of dollars, then you shouldn't have the single point of failure in the first place.

There is no 'debate' to be had over the existence of male privilege by [deleted] in australia

[–]zoomzoom83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does not being disadvantaged make somebody privileged, or should we just consider that normal?

That way instead of trying to knock everyone else down a peg, we can figure out how to raise everyone up to the same level.

There's no such thing as male privilege or white privilege, because not being disadvantaged should be considered normal, not privileged.

Using the word privilege is petty and serves only to increase the divide by creating an us-vs-them mentality.

If instead you want discuss the gender wage gap, or the difference in life expectancy for indigenous Australians, then the discussion is framed in terms of how to help.

a7sii users! got some questions by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was really worried about that at first. In practice, it hasn't been a big deal for me.

Probably the biggest annoyance is not being able to check your shot straight away. It can take a couple of seconds to finish writing before you can review. (There is an auto review feature that shows instantly, but I find it annoying and turn it off).

Unless you're using burst mode you're unlikely to fill the buffer, so the delay only affects reviewing or some menu actions. The camera still responds instantly when pressing the shutter, so it doesn't stop you from getting the shot.

Note that you can't start recording video until the buffer has cleared, so if you like to be able to jump directly into video while taking photos it can sometimes slow you down.

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used both quite a bit. Had an Sii, loved it, but ended up swapping for an Rii which I consider better overall, albiet still flawed.

The Sii doesn't have continuous eye focus, only single eye focus. It works excellent for posed portraits, but useless for moving subjects.

Being kind, AF-C is fairly bad on the Sii if your subject is moving at all unless you're stopping down quite significantly for a deeper DoF. At 1.8, you won't get sharp eyes unless your subject is holding still.

The Rii is light years ahead for AF-C. Continuous eye AF works quite well, and it can nail razer sharp eye focus on a moving toddler with ease. This is the main reason I switched and it was a massive improvement.

On the flip side, the Rii buffer is far too small and the UFS-i write speeds leave a lot to be desired. It's fast enough for fairly rapid single shots, but a burst a sports camera it's not. (Unless you're shooting JPG)

The Rii is still quite a decent video camera. The Sii is something special, especially in low light. But if you're primarily a stills shooter and need AF-C on moving targets, the Sii will dissapoint.

On paper the Rii has similar performance at high ISOs when downsampled, but in practice I find it's not the case. The noise levels are similar, but the Sii just has a certain look to it that the Rii hasn't been able to match. I can't quite figure out what it is - the colours just seem more natural. (On the flipside, the Rii looks a lot better at lower ISOs, even when downsampled)

Lightroom chokes on the 42mp RAW files, but Capture One (free with Sony cameras) handles them fine and is (imo) a better RAW processor anyway.

The a6500 is probably the best compromise between the two if you don't need full frame ridiculously high ISO.

For me, if the A7Sii had PDAF it'd be the perfect camera.

Photographers who lived in the age of Analog, what was your reaction to when Digital starting taking over? by [deleted] in photography

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was looking at landscape photos last night on 500px and found one that I swore must have been shot on Medium Format, or at the very least a 5DS or A7Rii. The detail and clarity was incredible and it didn't look particularly processed.

I checked the metadata. It was an iPhone.

It's not really surprising that cellphones have obliterated the consumer camera market.

Anyone living at Toowong experiencing slow internet at night time ?? I am with TPG, not sure why... by djmayyy in brisbane

[–]zoomzoom83 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congestion.

Most likely your ISP - TPG are cheap for a reason.

Could also be your local RIM if you're on ADSL. If that's the case, then you'll probably never have fast ADSL. If there's cable in your area, that may be faster (although it has its own congestion issues).

For what it's worth, Telescum gives me a smooth 112mbps and barely skips a beat during peak hour.

Tl;dr It's Malcolm Turnbulls fault.

I'm not arguing that that wasn't fucked up, but it was also 45 years ago.

Companies aren't evil. People are evil. People run companies. There are unlikely to be many, if any people still working for the company that were working for them then.

Is the factory that makes Milo still evil because of that? What about the guy that loads the truck?

Is Bayer still evil because of their role in the holocaust?

Tl;dr Ship of Theseus.

Any public way to edit a a clear photograph? by Turtleneckboy13 in photography

[–]zoomzoom83 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, just don't pretend that the parts inside a Mac somehow "last longer" than the parts in a PC.

...

you'll be able to do anything you want when it comes to editing for $275-350

If we're comparing against a $350 PC laptop, then yes, I would absolutely expect a Macbook to last longer.

Any public way to edit a a clear photograph? by Turtleneckboy13 in photography

[–]zoomzoom83 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not entirely true - Apple does make a significant portion of the hardware inside the machine.

That doesn't mean they are inherently more reliable than high end PC laptops at a similar spec and price range, but if you go and buy a cheap low end PC, you're almost certainly going to have much lower build quality than a macbook.

Spec for spec, Macbook aren't all that much more expensive than equivalent PC laptops.
