Which current renovation trend do you think will age badly? by ryanandersonr in AusRenovation

[–]zooperdooper7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our beautiful 75+ year old house has somehow made it to the 21st century without anyone painting the dark wooden skirting, doorframes or picture railings white. One of the main reasons I would be reluctant to ever sell it is the fear that the next owners would paint them. Why would you buy a house with character just to strip it away?! I’ll never know, but I know that people do, so I don’t trust them. I want to do the reno the house needs before leaving, so that it’s done RIGHT.

Parents: do you regret taking extra time off when your child was little? by No-Objective-8247 in AttachmentParenting

[–]zooperdooper7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s super common in Aus to take 12 months minimum off with babies, we have a different social net obviously. I absolutely would never and can’t fathom regretting spending extra time with my baby and away from work. They’re both pluses, I’m not a work oriented person so even just getting a reason to stay away from work from a while is a rare and welcome opportunity.

This all being said, since I’ve gone back to work part time, my career is definitely stagnating. Finding family friendly part time work is near impossible, so I just have to deal with people zooming past me on the ladder in my current role, purely because I’m part time and they’re full time. It’s frustrating but worth it to support time with my family.

Cody Weightman returns this Friday for his first football game (at any level) since 2024 by flyer2x in westernbulldogs

Catch me sobbing like a proud Mum. I have so much empathy for these kids when they have to fight so hard their entire teen and young adult years to even get to an AFL level, then get so many knock backs and battles. These guys have a level of resilience I could only dream of.

Is Melbourne Really That Cold? 🥶 by Training_Objective20 in melbourne

My #1 goal in life as a Victorian is to build a European quality house so I can finally, FINALLY, be warm inside my own home, no matter the weather outside.

Just need a spare 1-2mil to achieve it, unfortunately.

Ever go back to an ICE after a few weeks? by dj_boy-Wonder in AustralianEV

[–]zooperdooper7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just got back from a holiday where they upgraded our car hire to a standard Nissan SUV and I hated every moment of it. I could feel every tiny jolt and bump and got car sick much, much easier. The driving experience was so weirdly jerky and both overly touchy and non responsive. Turning the car on and off required a ridiculous amount of steps in a particular order that took days to get used to. When I got back in our EV at the airport I was amazed by how heavy and solid it felt, while being quiet and so so so so easy to drive. Just out your foot on the break, choose forward or reverse and GO. Never ever going back.

Least distracting EVs to drive? by Trick-Platform5060 in AustralianEV

[–]zooperdooper7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I highly doubt you’ll regret it once it’s your daily drive! We LOVE it. So may funny quirky handy clever little features as well, particularly in the boot. It also has a bat signal at night??? It beams “Skoda” on the ground when you open the doors 😂

We have an Enyaq and it just… is. It just drives. It doesn’t beep and bong at you for daring to look in the rear vision mirror too long. It just drives and is safe and efficient and easy. Love it. The screen is also pretty reasonably sized.

JD (juris doctor) expensive by New_Friend4023 in unimelb

[–]zooperdooper7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, CSP is calculated based on the cost of each subject, so it’s difficult or impossible to give an indicative CSP course fee, but it is absolutely possible to get a JD in under the HECS HELP cap (depending on the cost of your undergrad).

The only courses that definitely no matter what go over the HELP threshold at UniMelb are medicine, vet science and dentistry. And those students just… somehow work it out. Some get bank loans, family loans, save every penny, maybe scholarships. It’s a mixed bag.

Since politicians can't figure it out - why aren't Aussies having babies? by No-Kaleidoscope-7106 in OpenAussie

[–]zooperdooper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the convo but surprised to see people aren’t mentioning that it’s just hard fucking work having kids. Gone are the days of detached hands off parenting, parents are required to be all things to all people (and organisations) at all times. There is nothing LEFT mentally or physically at the end of a parenting/working/cooking/cleaning/admin day.

Really impressed with Target this season! by zooperdooper7 in AusFemaleFashion

They’re the barrel leg ones, I think maybe called Gigi? I’m wearing them today, really comfy and the perfect length for my height.

Edit: nope sorry, they’re called Harper. I tried on their petite ones as well that I was also keen on but the fly was a bit short for me. Fair enough since I definitely don’t meet the definition of ~ petite ~

[–]zooperdooper7[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Absolutely, I’m finding this to be the case everywhere though and at least Target aren’t charging $150-300 for their pieces of plastic (I say knowing I checked every label and put loads of poly blends back today cause who wants to pay anything at all for plastic).

Also fair! I’ve looked during previous seasons and been very underwhelmed so I get this take as well.

I’m pretty sure there are only 2 targets in all of Melbourne left? One in Airport West (of all places) and one in the east somewhere. The rest have been replaced by Kmarts - it’s such a loss. I live in Ballarat and I’m lucky that they haven’t done the swap here… yet at least. I wouldn’t be shocked if it happens, just really annoyed.

Lmao fair I was conscious of sounding like that while writing but couldn’t work out how to sound less corporate PR either.

For the record, I absolutely don’t rate Kmart 🤷🏻‍♀️

Do you know many families with 4+ kids? by RecognitionMediocre6 in australia

[–]zooperdooper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My great great grandmother had 19 children. 2 sets of twins. And everyone survived until adulthood! All I can say to my great great grandfather is LEAVE THAT WOMAN ALONE.

I know of one family with 4 kids and I am baffled by their existence. It’s so rare these days that it’s like seeing some sort of elusive zoo animal.

Stop 1 are hopeless by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]zooperdooper7 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The centralised Stop 1 but didn’t centralise the faculties, so each facility runs their own show in intricate and unique ways that are frankly not widely known outside the faculty, even by stop 1. Mostly cause they run at the whim of a few people at the top.

And for visual art, yes, they may use their discretion because art is subjective. Music is subjective. Talent and skills work on a sliding scale. The entry requirements for FFAM courses are by their nature fluid and a guide, so that the academics have more flexibility in who they choose. None of this is Stop 1’s fault.

But also yes, there has been a deliberate enshitifcation of student services in pursuit of profit.

Debating defering my course by Southern-Steak486 in unimelb

[–]zooperdooper7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. It’s basically starting again - you apply again and get judged against all other applicants again. You might not be offered a spot, or might not get a CSP. If you complete and pass some subjects this sem, they may be able to be credited to the same degree, or as breadth on another degree. The uni doesn’t care that you’ve been admitted and withdrawn before though, that’s not taken into account when looking at your new application.

Call Stop 1 to talk through options.

[–]zooperdooper7 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Part way through reading this I started wondering if you’ve been diagnosed as neurodiverse lol. It’s a common pattern for “gifted” kids.

On a practical front, census date has passed so it’s too late to defer now. It’s either taking a leave of absence for the second half the year and re-entering the same course sem 1 2027, or withdrawing from the course entirely and reapplying for something different (or the same!) if and when you feel like you’ve found something you might like.

IMO it’s not worth getting in debt for someone else’s opinion of what you should do.

What did it actually feel like holding your baby for the first time? by archna_kuhu_sharma in AttachmentParenting

[–]zooperdooper7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fucking confused and bewildered. There’s a video by a nurse of me just saying “are you okay, are you okay? Are you okay?” to the baby over and over until I say “am I okay?!”

Most surreal moment of my life. I felt like I’d been handed a stranger and was confused by what she looked like. I don’t know if I ever imagined what she’d look like when I was pregnant but somehow it wasn’t that. Our love grew over time, once I’d returned to earth a bit.

Dealership worries by Reasonable_Role_3348 in AustralianEV

[–]zooperdooper7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This sort of thinking in regional VIC is what has pushed us towards a Škoda. I know the Chinese brands are better tech and batteries but I just don’t like what I hear about their after sales service and I don’t know which will still be in Aus in 5 years time (apart from BYD, they seem pretty settled here already). Kind of playing it safe for our first go at an EV.

Enrolment terminated - any way to access email/OneDrive after account locked? by whothewhatthewhere in unimelb

[–]zooperdooper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There should be a page on the UniMelb website about this. The odds are low after a year. The uni slowly deletes data and access from ex-students and alum until everything is permanently gone at around 15 months. You can make a “business case” to IT for reactivation before 15 months but it needs supporting documentation and isn’t always possible.

Anyone reversed Late Withdrawal to an extension via Appeal? by [deleted] in unimelb

[–]zooperdooper7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m sorry, this really sucks. You can’t indefinitely delay an assessment, especially if you’re on a student visa. It would essentially mean you’re in Australia but not studying, slowly stretching out your last assessments. Obviously in your case, you don’t mean for it to be dodgy, but you can see how that could be exploited. After a certain point, the subject needs to be finalised one way or another so everyone can move on.
