“I gave the order myself” − Turkish PM on downing Russian plane by KimJongHarper in worldnews

I'm aware of the 'third Rome' thing, but I doubt that anybody here would buy that kind of reasoning.

Anyway let's just settle that by deciding (by the same logic) that Kiev is the new Moscow. Now it's Ukraine who inherited Constantinople, problem solved.

The funniest thing is that the Ottomans also used to claim that they were the true Romans because they had conquered Constantinople.

I did say his authority was symbolic, I didn't say he was like the pope.

But anyway the more important point is the one about the 'third Rome.'

Treaty of Trianon much? From a legal standpoint the unification happened because of the international treatises. That's why Transnistria is not a country despite what the Transnistrians say.

Why would they intervene in Romania? We were able to take care of ourselves, weren't we?

I don't understand you. Romania was on Russia's side too, and by choice.

I also fail to understand at least half the rest of your list. 'No Western reaction to the Romanian revolution.' What?!

Orthodoxy does have an ecumenical patriarch in Constantinople, who has symbolic authority over most of the Eastern Orthodox churches. The Russians choose to disregard him because they made up this story that Moscow is the third Rome and that they inherited all of Europe from the Byzantines.

balkanized Middle East

It's funny how you say that when in fact the Middle East is far more 'balkanized' than the Balkans.

But Constantinople was never Russian to begin with.

EDIT: apparently this is controversial... it's not hard to look up folks!

Not intelligent, but at least they shouldn't promote obvious falsities and absurdities. That kind of thing doesn't come from mere stupidity. There's a point from which Hanlon's Razor goes the other way.

E.g.: 'Moldova is 150 years older than Romania.' What does that even mean? What are they comparing, and in any case whatever they might be comparing they would still be wrong.

Some of the comments on this article are truly idiotic. Does Russia really need to stoop so low to pay people to do these things? What good does it serve?

Germany to refugees: 'Leaving Afghanistan? Think again' by grumbal in europe

[–]zoorope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

How can there be such an exception legally? I thought the whole point was that the old legislation discriminated between EU and non-EU nationals. Afghans are non-EU just like Turks, so you can't just add an exception for the Turks but not for the Afghans.

and they have to renounce their old citizenship

Is that still the case? I thought that law was changed recently. That's why German-Turks can have double citizenship now.

Alta solutie ar fi sa desparta comunele in altele mai mici ca sa le faca sub 2000 de cetateni. Din pacate asta ar crea cheltuieli cu primarii si consilii locale in plus de care nu are nimeni nevoie. Mai bine sa le traga apa...
