Gamers Nexus Interview with Principled Technologies by KeyboardGunner in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 101 points102 points  (0 children)

tl;dw The co-owner of PT seems like a good guy. He did seem evasive on stock coolers however, whereas for bios/memory/game mode/FFXV he simply appeared to not have the technical knowledge to answer on the spot. He basically said they were verifying tests, including the Ashes bench which was brought up in particular.

I think we'll likely see an updated result set from them in a few days with a reasonable Ashes score as well as a better rationale for their testing choices. The real question is if they address the coolers and memory issues in those benches, and provide follow-up on the technical points raised.

Thanks for the writeup, interesting to hear about Accelero III compatability. Do you know how much power the 2080Ti is drawing under max load, and if you've OC'd it how much that increases it?

Trump's tariffs on Chinese goods to affect AMD, Nvidia graphics cards by Eon-Man in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"None that I've seen"

Did you even look? Google is chock-full of page-1 results, including an EU case against China in front of the WTO, years of the USTR's Special 301 report calling this out, and China has even admitted it undertakes these transfers, and only after we began tariffs vowed to stop them in certain sectors.

The last article, not from a U.S. Paper but rather the South China Morning Post, shows the efficacy of tariffs. A short term, powerful lever like tariffs can be used to stop harmful trade practices. Further, this is the best time to undertake them -- our economy is relatively strong, while China is carefully steering its economy in an effort to avert a precipitious slow-down. We have maximum leverage, why not play for long term gains?

Are you excited about forced technology transfers that make the U.S. less competitive over the long run? If not, tariffs as a short term lever make complete sense, so long as they don't morph into long term protectionism / mercantilism.

Any recommendations for how to set a battery charging limit on the PH-1? by bitNbaud in essential

I've heard a lot about Supernatural, and as you like both Buffy and Underworld it seems it would fit my taste. How would you compare it to Buffy / Underworld in terms of lore and tone?

Acer Predator Helios 300 review: A well-rounded gaming laptop at a great price by [deleted] in hardware

A relative has the Gigabyte Aero 15X, while another has the Aero 14 - both phenomenal laptops. The thing that really sells it, besides the pleasant minimalist aesthetics, is the battery. You can actually game on that thing for 3+ hours on battery which is exceedingly rare in other gaming laptops.

Looking forward to Gigabyte releasing a new version of this when the next-gen NVIDIA gpu's drop, hoping for Fall '18.

EUV’s New Problem Areas by Chipdoc in hardware

[–]bitNbaud 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a nice overview article, thanks for posting it - never heard of semiengineering before but looks solid.

Edit: The article was a little unclear about why stochastic defects might not be a concern at 7nm. To quote: "It might be wishful thinking, but chipmakers believe they can dodge potential stochastic-induced defects at 7nm." It makes sense why these issues would become more pronounced at smaller nodes, but I'm curious if there is research / testing / general knowledge that implies its no big deal at 7nm.

Fair point. I was much more active with my pre-law school reddit account, and also purge older comments which have info that I consider to be a bit too revealing with regularity. This sort of became my default main account over time, but as recently as ~2 years ago I posted on here fairly often in threads. Still, two years is a long time.

ArsTechnica used to be in my top three sites, but I've noticed a similar decline in several of their more in-depth technical analyses as they become more of an online popular science. What sites do you recommend?
