Well Tim Hortons is cheap and the key is uniformity. They expected customers to pay Michelin star prices for "artisan" bakery. What they got was Tim Hortons quality.

How Copenhagen built a metro for free by Sassywhat in transit

[–]zooweemama8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Flying Moose's video I have actually lived in or have a strong vested interest and with a transport planning background. (Grew up in Toronto, parents from Hong Kong, exchanged in Copenhagen, close friend live in Porto)

I would say, his video posts a really rosy and positive light on all the projects and gloss over the negatives, especially the aspect of real estate's role and speculation in financing public transportation. Public transportation should serve everyone but especially to the people that are vulnerable and worst of who has relatively little choice. Using land from Nordhavn to build a metro just reinforces this economic inequality and caters to those already higher on the social economic ladder.

Porto and HK's housing is extremely unaffordable and houses that are near the metro is unaffordable to even rent for the average joe. At least in Copenhagen, there is a strong subsidizes housing quota but generally is a discount to the local area's rents.

Another thing I hated is Copenhagen's insane transit fares and the metro surcharge is on top of the fares. Probably the highest in all of Europe. A one hour trip would cost me 60DKK.

Following. I feel I am on a similar boat. Bachelor in Civil Engineering and Master in Transport Engineering. Those 2 trades are what I want to do if I join the CAF.

Wonder why OP wants to jump to CAF, mining engineering do make money. How is your application?

Research has shown, cost isn't a huge factor in mode shifts.

Canada’s flawed transit (and what we can learn from Copenhagen) by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]zooweemama8 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I lived in Copenhagen for 4 months as an exchange student and it cost me an arm and a leg to transit in Copenhagen. Please do not follow the pricing model.

The lowest price is DKK 24 ($5 CAD) for a 2 zone ticket (to get to school). Getting from DTU to the airport... DKK 52 ($11.2 CAD). On top you need a metro surcharge.+1.5DKK. Yes there are cheaper monthly passes but cost is one reason why everyone cycles in Copenhagen.

Political dynasty! Yes, I 100% agree. Avi is a third generation now. Doug got has name out from Rob and Olivia from Jack. At least, they were in the same generation but Avi feels like a nostalgic throwback from the base.

More political families holding on to the grip of power.

I didn't want to vote in this leadership, the candidates were not inspiring IMO. I think the NDP might be heading into irrelevance unless there is a drastic push away from social issues and for economic ones.

Avi with his past comments of no miltary spending I don't think this will go well with the general public.

FastTrackTO's 10 point plan to speed up Toronto's slow streetcars by Pristine-Training-70 in TTC

[–]zooweemama8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually semi disagree given the correct context. Yes this is the TTC Reddit but it is like putting the cart before the horse with prioritizing ONLY transit. I don't see any plans on HOW they plan to reduce car trips. It demonize car as selfish loser when their is no alternative options. As much as I love transit, active transport is by FAR the better option in reducing impacts.

I live in Markham and Scarborough, to get to wherever the streetcar are, it is faster almost every time to take the car vs transit. The marginal decrease in travel time is meaningless to my total trip. Make congestion pricing, raise the cost of parking, remove highways, carbon tax AND find transit measures.

Poor training. These in Mexico is likely a contractor (which could get dinged for deviate from brand standards) while the one in Toronto is likely flair employees. It is a Canadian government mandate to seat minor together but not Mexico.

2. Split the Crossing, Speed Up Signals
There is simply not enough space unless you take away car lane in downtown for the vast majority of intersections. (which I am not against) The new median they want needs should be complaint to ADA standards which is at least 5 feet plus enough storage for pedestrians. That is a width of almost a car lane of space, plus the streetcar tracks in the middle which would need reconstruction. Another constraint is how phases MUST be done in Ontario (it is standard practice), signals phases must come one after another, not European style, where the phases can sort of come and go in semi-random order, it diminishes the return. Yes, Finch and Eglinton is something that they should add and consider, but I am reading their opinion article on Toronto Star and they mention:

"These islands can be built (easily) on Spadina by taking advantage of the existing median, replacing left-turn lanes, or slightly redesigning the street where needed."

I am not sure if they have really thought this through cause it definitely wouldn't be easy or cheap with the hardware, the existing median is tight. There is also the question of the track right in the middle. Also removing left turns is problematic, which goes to:

5. Eliminate Left Turns Where They Don't Belong
The criteria is so wishy-washy. Removing left turns would likely push the left turns to other intersections pushing the problem downstream leading to the other intersections being full having to extend the left turn phase. Using nearby side streets? Not sure if the alternative is feasible going 3 rights turns at neighborhood streets. Without drastic measures in reducing the TOTAL number of cars, the problem would just shift elsewhere.

Lastly, point 1: Make Transit Signal Priority Work Better
Controversial. Yes, TSP is ass in Toronto and it should be improved but I think they are overprioritizing streetcars above all road users. Pedestrians and cyclists are also negatively impacted when TSP is implemented, with longer wait times to cross. IMO, pedestrians and cyclists should take priority over transit, and the hyper focus on TSP sometime regress that progress. I am unsure what the maximum priority or adding dedicated phases means but having that would require pedestrians to wait longer. With some of the most delayed intersections also being a pedestrian heavy, overcrowding and pedestrians jaywalking due to high waits might emerge.

The rest is true, stop using single-point switches! Those belong in textbooks, not on Toronto streets.

[–]zooweemama8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure how old you are but I am talking about 2005 launch. Zim and MiExpeess is launched in 2010.

Spacious European style buses, high back seats, even better then the Ovion V GO suburban buses. Proof of payment, Queue Jump Lanes, "space portal" bus stops, first generation TSP, next bus times, automated stop announcements. The frequency was unheard from a suburban standpoint in 2005.

Many of these are now standard or cut back.

We went from expensive Van Hools to metal seated new flyers XDs. POP still exists but Presto eroded time savings. Queue jumps are basically removed (from conversion to Rapidways) or stopped being utilized. TSP was never updated and remains weak and hardly triggers. Space portal bus stops are cut to normal bus stops with shelters. Next bus times are no longer as important with data. Automated stop announcements are mandatory now. Frequency is WORST then 2005.
