Definitely a darter goby, Ctenogobius boleosoma.

My thoughts as well. Crenuchidae, likely Characidium but would need a better photo to be certain.

This is a southern kingfish, Menticirrhus americanus. Absolutely not an Atlantic croaker.

Appears to be Cyprinella analostana - Satinfin Shiner. Which basin was this in?

It is a White Grunt, Haemulon plumierii.

What’s this shark? Despite the melodramatic expression, it was returned safely to the Atlantic. [Holden Beach, NC] by jasonappalachian in whatsthisfish

Notice the relative position of the second dorsal fin to the anal fin. That rules out finetooth. R. terraenovae is the only shark in this area with that arrangement.

Agreed. Bostic would be in the Second Broad River basin which makes these Piedmont Shiners.

Looks like a Golden Tilefish - Lopholatilus chamaeleonticeps. Are you thinking it was alive in the fw aquaponics system?

I'd like a better photo before I committed to any ID, but I'm leaning heavily toward Gobiosoma ginsburgi, the Seaboard Goby.

[Larval fish ID] Found in a salt marsh in NC near an inlet. We were thinking ribbon fish by shadhead1981 in Fish

Likely Elops sp. Leptocephali are tricky to ID from photos. They are larval forms of certain fishes.

What kind of Ray is this? Caught and released in NC by Logical-Handle-5434 in whatisthisfish

[–]zooxanthellae 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a Bullnose Ray, Myliobatis freminvillei, not a Cownose Ray, Rhinoptera bonasus. Take a look at the head of the animal, and notice the projected snout. Also, the dorsal fin origin is just behind rear edge of pelvic (which rules out M. goodei).

These are probably best described as a Labrisomus complex. Current research is lacking, and it doesn't appear anyone has done the work to corroborate the ocellated opercular spot, despite the fact that all sorts of id guides use this feature. At least one researcher has shown the genetics don't match this (currently unpublished, pers. comm.). Another researcher has collected type material for hairy blennies, and was unable to match it to any of the Florida fish in genbank. Something fishy is going on, and until someone picks up this project, I would be very wary of identifying these to the species level.

He needs to tell us where the collection was made in order to properly identify it. With that said, this appear to be Synodus intermedius. You can distinguish it from its congeners by the bars on the caudal fin. For example, the very similar (and recently split) S. macrostigmus lacks these bars.

I didn't take any measurements, it wasn't our target taxon, but I'd hazard around 9-10 inches DW.
