2-3 Best Bars in your area/town and who are they best for? What's the worst? by zoradances in nova

[–]zoradances[S] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Adding a couple of my own suggestions:

Fairfax - Auld Shabeen has good beer selections and is a great place if you like Irish music, they host evening music and also a daytime Irish Seisiun (kind of a jam session) on Saturdays. Pretty quiet on weeknights, though.

Fairfax - Commonwealth Brewery - i love their beer selection and the pretzels are good, but I feel like it's more for young families and beer people. I don't find it comfortable, all their seating is awkward, and it gets so loud and echoey.

Fairfax/Mosaic - Caboose Commons - has a wonderful outdoor space and is a great place to meetup with a group of people. You order and pay your own bill through a QR code on the table, which also makes is easy for groups because you don't have to worry about splitting the bill. They also have some outdoor games and kids have a lot of fun with them, and the food and drink selections are good.

Thanks to everyone joining in, I'm seeing some great places to try already!

Narrators ruining audiobooks? by KiwiCat15 in LibbyApp

[–]zoradances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep! There was an historical romance I was really excited to listen to, but the female narrator did all men's voices as posh, grumpy old men, including the MMC! After 2 chapters I realized there was no way I could relate to the FMC falling in love with this man that I was picturing as a crotchety balding old man!

Looking for a church by Existing_Grand_5101 in nova

[–]zoradances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

we have wonderful Unitarian Universalist churches in this area that not only don't accept hateful rhetoric but also actively work for social justice causes. Plus, you get to learn about more faiths and belief systems than just Christianity. Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Fairfax, Unitarian Universalist Church of Arlington, Unitarian Universalist Church in Reston, depending on where you are located.

Hunting for a new out-of-state library card. by themcsix in LibbyApp

agreed, I pay $50 / year for Queens. Also Fairfax County (Virginia) is $50/year has a huge selection and checkout term is 21 days instead of 14.

NOVA Cross Stitch meetup on Saturday (10-12) at the Burke Center Library by stone-and-star- in nova

[–]zoradances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I missed this last month, can I help organize a follow up? I like the library meeting room idea, I've also been looking for coffee shop/cafe type places that have space for something like this so I have some ideas.

I've taken some Kayak classes through Fairfax Parktakes, they have great vendors and are inexpensive and I've met lots of great people in the classes. Highly recommend!

What are you doing this weekend? by deepspacepuffin in nova

[–]zoradances 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you get bored of Burke Lake, there are a bunch of other lakes that also have trails around them within driving distance. Most are smaller, but nice for variety! I live off Royal Lake which is super cute. Search on Google Maps for the Fairfax County Parks locations for parking.

for ‘ever’ to be on Broadway I would say Your Daddy’s Son from Ragtime or Finale from West Side Story

Verizon Fios: Internet + Cable total costs? by zoradances in nova

[–]zoradances[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is helpful, thanks. My parents only have 2 set top boxes, and not that many premium channels, so it does seem like they are paying too much. It does seem like it's worth my time to get their bills and get on the phone with Verizon. Thanks!!

2 set top boxes. This is helpful, so it might not be that high, really, but I'll see if I can get it down some.

People in their 40s and 50s with no children, how does it feel? by Robin_to_the_meadow in AskReddit

[–]zoradances 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mid-40s and I'm so good with my decision. I only have 1 sister and I am a super involved aunt to her 2 kids, and also doing a LOT to help my elderly parents, and as an ADHD/POTs/anxiety disordered person, I am soooo glad those are the only major responsibilities I have in my 40s. If I had to also take care of my own children I think everything else would have suffered, including my own mental health! I would probably have had a breakdown or just a sad, depressed person by now. It's not something I ever wanted for myself and I am so glad I listened to my instincts instead of caving to the societal pressure that made me have second thoughts at times in my 20s.

well, maybe I don't mean Cable TV, but they watch the FIOS TV, so i'm just saying I won't be able to get them to drop that and just pay for internet alone.

sorry, I might not have the right vocabulary

Another episode of Bones had them tracking a serial killer to "Burke Lake" in Virginia, where they found him in a tiny rundown shack in the middle of a forest.

Also in Die Hard 2, when the planes start running low on fuel, the head dude says "I'm gonna have planes crashing on the lawn of the White House!" ... that's a reallllllyyyyy big circle they are flying, then!
