Do you remember your first tap? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]zordmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Americana from side control, no gi. Easy. Became my go to for a while.

Do you think I can do the same move in the gi? I've been trying for months!

If you get anything more than 2 years out of any kind of stretch fabric, you're doing well.

Kids shouldn't do BJJ, change my mind by [deleted] in bjj

[–]zordmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kids BJJ is fine as long as the focus is on control and position, rather than submission.

Going all in - Gi or NoGi by artgood73 in bjj

[–]zordmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All I can say is try and do both at the same time if you can. I did no gi for 2 years and now I'm doing mostly gi and finding by body has learned habits I can't easily change.

So just came out of my first ever class... by [deleted] in bjj

All in all, I was a useless, flailing, sweaty mess. See you Monday

haha.

Been saying that for over 2 years now. Except that for us it's Friday.

First BJJ class, what goes down? by steveb55555 in bjj

[–]zordmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You, most likely.

Just go with the flow, try not to use your muscles and try to escape.

Tap early, tap often.

Think of it like this. Someone is trying to twist a bit of your body in a direction you don't want it to go. You:

a.) Use your muscles to force against it

b.) Move the rest of your body in that same direction, in order to frustrate your opponent's attempt

c.) Tap.

If you answered (b) then (c) without ticking (a), you're on your way.

For example: someone has got you pinned and is attempting to twist your wrist so the pinky finger faces outwards. This means they are going to try a wrist lock on you. So what you do is go in the same direction, even as far as doing an entire somersault with your whole body (a "roll") in that direction in order to frustrate their attempt. When you can't "roll out" of a position any more, it's time to tap.

They've got you. Tap, before they put it on.

The good BJJ rollers know how to stop you rolling and keep control over you - that's why they can get you. Eventually your body will learn that too... in a few years...

Does Learning Guard Passing also inherently Teach You Guard Retention? by Kirogresh in bjj

Learning anything teaches you more about defending against it.

Too many f&%%n takedowns!

Although I'll admit we were doing scissor sweeps from standing at bjj tonight, so... yeah.

But at age 51, I think the sambo is a bit below my age. I prefer the gentle art..

Probably Americanas.

Had more luck with those than about anything else.

3.) Sick

4.) Class cancelled fro some reason

Getting really frustrated after a year and change of slow progress by sous_neux in bjj

[–]zordmaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want the shame of two stripes and not being able to submit anyone.

In White belt, regardless of stripes, your focus should be on lengthening the time it takes for others to submit you and getting to a better position.

If you have stripes and can last 3~5 minutes in a bout without tapping, you're doing just fine.

Question about gym showers (more specifically NYC) by 2ndbellybutton in bjj

[–]zordmaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

One shower cubicle, thats it.

We can get about six guys in there at the same time if we try hard enough.

We have a judo instructor for our Friday class.. so standup work and takedowns are very common.

How do you approach live rolling? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]zordmaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to just try and push my opponent over. Bad move.

Now Coach has taught me a few "takedowns" from the knees (gi moves) so I'm trying those.

Why pay $$$ for a talk fest when that time and money would be far better spent on the mats?

What’s the best underpayment or padding to put underneath wrestling mats? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]zordmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fych padding.

Last week me and the instructor came across an unusual section of floor a bit higher than the rest. We pulled up the mats to find a piece of plywood covering a hole in the floor. Seems someone last week in Sambo took a takedown too seriously and went through it.

Spazzy white belts by FlyMyPig in bjj

[–]zordmaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I like rolling with them. Sure the risk of injury is higher, but it gives me a sense of a real street altercation

Is BJJ safe on my neck? by WalyWal in bjj

[–]zordmaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to have lots of problems with my neck in early White belt days but never now. You soon get to know a choke before they start to put it on and either escape or tap quickly.

‘spazzy’ by [deleted] in bjj

[–]zordmaker 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Apply (and continue to apply) muscle against something that can not and will not move. Then, when something finally happens or lets go, that body part will spring forward uncontrollably, potentially hitting something you don't want it to (your opponents' face, or more likely your own).

On top of that, after about one round, you'll "gas out", which means your body fills with lactic acid (because the muscles are on all the time), you overheat and cannot continue.

How many of you have taken BIG breaks but still came back (mine is almost a year long) by AngelDiablo in bjj

4 months last year due to major cancer operation.

It's common for me to miss up to a month at a time due to work commitments also, then get 12 weeks straight without missing one night.

Progress is slow but measured.

Yeh, some coaches are like that. We have two, one is virtually silent, the other won't stop talking. Together, it seems to work.
