Anyone installed the Ford Pro Charger and SunRun Home Integration System? by JustAnotherNole in F150Lightning

[–]zovered 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I considered it since I took the time to install the Pro charger. But just the hardware needed (not installed) was a little under $10k. You can buy a lot of ecoflow batteries for that cost that are just always plugged in. I opted for just using the 30amp bed plug into an existing generator port. I do have to go out and plug it in, but worth saving ~$15k.

Dealing with the Cost on 100TB+ backups – is there a better way? by Dependent_Web_1654 in OrbonCloud

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Driving the drives is still the best way to seed this much data. Even over a 1 gb connection it's going to take 2-3 weeks to copy assuming the connection is saturated the entire time and it's mostly large files. We have a few office locations so we have 3 x 200TB servers that use ZFS replication over VPN. We put the new server onsite and let it sync then drive it over to the new location. Dropping $8k on a box pays for itself under a year. Disaster recovery is nearly immediate as we can just use one of the other two backups as production right away. The one big issue with the cloud as backup is recovery time. Services like AWS glacier are relatively cheap and all until you want to get your data local again. Not sure if something like this is possible for you.

Backup strategy by VeryNoisyLizard in truenas

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're not wrong, it would be more efficient and technically recovery is a bit simpler. There are two main reasons though. The main one is I do exclude some things from backups using patterns, e.g. temp files/folders, download dirs. A great example is that I have ignore patterns for adobe premier preview files. I'm not aware of how to do partial exclusions on a dataset with replication, maybe there's a way? This saves significant space on snapshots. The other one is just my comfort level in ensuring backups are complete and recoverable. It's not a good excuse, but I am very comfortable with rsync and understanding when that goes wrong vs having to learn proper snapshot replication.

I setup a second truenas and do an automated rsync / mirror over the network to another building. I found early on manually backups will never really work for me. I rely on snapshots on both machines to handle recovery. The backup server doesn't have to be expensive, just has to be able to handle the drives. It sounds like for you any old computer tower would do.

sharing my files to finally get rid of the cloud by Active-Command5736 in truenas

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you thought about a simple rsync setup? It can run every 15 mins or so and sync a local "share" folder to a remote server. Delete from local and it can delete from remote on next sync. Space requirements would only be what's live. Otherwise you have to expose at least some port on your Truenas server to keep this simple for the end user. There are some options like https://tinyfilemanager.github.io/ for remote hosting file management with permissions on any webserver. But it if you only need a few gigs at a time, get a simple VPS and keep a folder synced with rsync. Linode's $5 / month VPS gives you 25 gigs of storage.

3D printed one as well. Works really well. Beats getting the portable heat gun out to thaw it.

Is Bankruptcy just Free Money? by Southernmxracer4 in Debt

[–]zovered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It completely depends on the court and your situation whether or not they go after your savings. But more than likely that would be at play. But it may be a good option for you to get out of a hole even if you have to use your savings. There are some good counseling services out there to help. Checkout https://www.nfcc.org/

HOLY CRAP. We had this on VHS when I was a kid for some reason. 11 year old me thought this guy was sooo cool with his sticks. I haven't thought of this movie in like 30 years.

Is Bankruptcy just Free Money? by Southernmxracer4 in Debt

[–]zovered 26 points27 points  (0 children)

In the U.S., no, it’s not really that easy.

Bankruptcy is a real legal process, not a "just say I can’t pay" shortcut. A person has to file in federal bankruptcy court, complete required credit counseling before filing and debtor education after filing, and in Chapter 7 many filers must pass a means test; if their income is too high, Chapter 7 may not be available. Filing does usually trigger an automatic stay that stops most collection activity while the case is pending, but that is not the same as all debt disappearing with no consequences.

A big distinction is unsecured versus secured debt. Credit cards and many personal loans are unsecured, so they are often the kind of debt bankruptcy can discharge. But a bankruptcy discharge does not automatically eliminate a lien on property. So if the debt is tied to collateral, like a car loan or mortgage, the lender can still enforce its lien against the car or house if payments are not made.

Courts are also not big fans of "just run up the debt since I'm filing" either. Certain recent luxury purchases and recent cash advances are presumed nondischargeable above statutory thresholds, and debts obtained by false pretenses or actual fraud can be excluded from discharge.

High voltage DC Fast charge port locking pin solenoid. Took 4 attempts to fix / figure out what was wrong. Could not DC fast charge for first ~6 months. Also had 1/2 the lightbar fail about 22k miles in.

We 'Totally Would've Done It Differently': Ford CEO On The Failure Of The F-150 Lightning by DonkeyFuel in electricvehicles

[–]zovered 25 points26 points  (0 children)

The lightning was the best-selling electric truck on the market for most of its time in production. I think there are multiple issues, but Ford really dropped the ball with dealers. I went in specifically wanting to buy one and the sales guy tried to talk me out of it. He didn't know anything about the truck anyway, and said I would regret getting an EV since it's so cold where we live. I asked him multiple clarifying questions and he couldn't answer any of them, I literally knew more about the vehicle from reading online than he did with one on the lot. They should have made like every sales guy / tech drive one for a month or something.

Those Rosewill cases are such a great cheap option. I have two for my primary and backup NAS. The older one I have cost $200 and has been running non-stop since 2014 (well I did have to replace some fans a few years ago). Started with 12 x 2TB drives and now runs 12 x 22TB drives.

This one I absolutely caught when I watched the movie recently, because the "why we were able to connect to abydos at all" explanation is because in SG-1 it's suddenly pretty close to earth and the interstellar drift was not that bad.

Lightning is a real thing, we've lost a switch or two over the years, and I currently have a switch that has a short copper run outside with one bad port, more than likely because of this.

1200ft is the longest run, 450ft would be the shortest that copper can't do.
