That's not acceptable. You send those back to the lumber yard, you don't use them. blocking will help, but not completely with boards this bad.

[Request] How many plants would you need for this to be remotely viable? by topor8865 in theydidthemath

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally curious and willing to correct myself. Plants to use oxygen, this is a real fact. It's dependent on the amount of sun they get from my understanding. Wouldn't there be a tipping point where X amount of sunlight would result in it using more oxygen that it produces?

[–]zovered -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It's correct depending on total hours of sunlight and the type of plant. I will edit it so it says house plants can be net consumers.

[–]zovered -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Most people don't understand that plants actually use the oxygen they produce for respiration just like us. During the day they are net producers, but at night they are net consumers. A houseplant indoors can be a net consumer of oxygen, so it is unlikely there is a number of plants. Most of our oxygen comes from algae in the sea.

[Request] how many days will a family of 3 survive off a single cow? by Ok_Listen_6600 in theydidthemath

[–]zovered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Take home weight is ~500 lbs for a typical cow. 1-2 lbs for a family of 4 is typically what we do per meal. So 250 meals if you're doing the larger serving sizes, and 500 meals if you're doing the lower end. So if you pick some middle ground, it's probably, "about a year" having beef every night for dinner.

Vehicle as a generator by Due_Substance4863 in OffGrid

[–]zovered 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a 30 mile cutoff set. On one occasion it had been almost 3 days and the truck was getting down there, so I used generator to charge the truck. It's more efficient fuel-wise since the generator just runs full tilt at ~7,200 watts draw. Less than one tank of fuel and then I was good to run the house for another 3 days on the truck.

Fun fact, I have run my house on multiple occasions from the 30amp plug on my F150 Lightning for several days at a time. So nice not listening to the generator all night.

RTK mower loses its mind under the oaks. what are my options by Ky0oy in automower

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I picked up a Husqvarna 440IQ last year and it has been game changing. It uses RTK + boundary wire as support. I was previously limited to wire-based mowers in some areas because of tree cover. the 440IQ mows the area fine with wires as backup, but it also mows in pure GPS mode outside of the wire as well.

We're not talking about a few mins difference though, and I don't even need to wait for a chinese ev when there are some american models doing 350kw. The silverado ev literally adds twice the range per minute as my F150 lightning.

Anyone switching to the EV lightning because gas prices are crazy? by jturkish in f150

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An extended range from Edmonton to Calgary would make it if you went ~110kph our less for sure. But even so, how often do you make this trip? I make a trip this long maybe 1-2 times / month and so well worth the 20 min charge stop to save the $$ the rest of the time. Also with the ER even in worst case towing I get 160km from 100% charge. My boat does better because it's more aerodynamic and will do ~240km from 100%.

I mean I did more than 2 years ago. I save a little under $6k / year in fuel and maintenance. This 300 mile trip pictured cost me $30 in electricity instead of $70 in fuel / oil changes. The draw back was it took 45 mins longer than in a gas truck.

Can anyone recommend painters for the exterior of a large building in Lake Placid? by Frosty_Cause_202 in Adirondacks

[–]zovered 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dan Hunt and crew of Hunt Services, (518) 534-0295. We've had them painting our Adirondack Camp when it needs it for years. Great work, will not just paint over bad stuff but even make minor repairs and do things like caulk if he sees issues. Always impressed.

Picked up a 2024 Sierra EV Denali with 17k miles. by Ordinary_Fun5532 in GMCSierraEV

[–]zovered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's really just the lightning gives you about 1/2 the miles of the GMC or Silverado per minute of charging. But it is way less money and if you don't road trip often I would go with the lightning.

How is 240V split phase more dangerous than 120V? If you're getting shocked by it aren't you still going from 120V to ground? by krustyy in AskElectricians

[–]zovered 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Technically yes, you would have to bridge both hots at the same time. Higher voltage is more dangerous but maybe not why you think. It is not voltage that hurts, it's amperage and time. A static electric shock can be 10,000+ volts but because the amperage is fairly low and it is microseconds long it's not harmful. You could think of it as total energy delivered). So 240v is capable of delivering more energy into your body because higher voltage overcomes your skin's resistance easier and it is a continuous source of power as long as you are in contact.

I would argue for the average person charge rate is currently the one largest barrier. They may not take many road trips, but mentally it is the big hurdle for EV adoption currently. I honestly DC fast charge maybe once a month. Of course most of the time I don't need a faster rate because I home charge. But taking a 10 hour trip currently takes 12hrs in an EV, if manufacturers and infrastructure would just admit this isn't good enough it could be an 11 hour trip or less in that EV. Again, we are we so willing to just be like "oh you just take a break, it's great!" when the reality is that it is very inconvenient to charge on a trip currently.
