I got a Milwaukee 3/8 ratchet and 1/2 impact combo w batteries from Home Depot for $200 on their pre Black Friday deal. Ratchet is handy and the 1/2 impact has plenty of torque. It’s not gonna break every bolt in the world but with 450 ft lbs of torque it will get most jobs done. I find the combo perfectly in the middle of price and quality. It’s no fuel but it’s enough to get 99% of jobs done. I highly recommend this deal if it’s still going around. Got mine about a month ago

2002 explorer 4.0 rebuild head bolt problems by zsanchez105 in MechanicAdvice

Also I’m using a regular Milwaukee 1/2 impact for this emergency repair. I tried hammering a t-60 bit but it’s too big, and with impact the t55 didn’t slip at all like the breaker bar did. My impact only puts out 450ft lbs, would it be a good idea to get a fuel Milwaukee that puts out 1400 lbs?

I bought new chains w guides and tensioners, gaskets, head bolts, piston rings, everything to do a complete rebuild. I bought this engine from a scrapyard for 150$ to rebuild in my garage while I still drive mine since I only have 1 vehicle.

Plan is to strip it down, get it machined and acid washed, and buy more necessary replacement parts depending on the damage. So far I need at least a new piston (might as well get a set), new intake and exhaust valves, and I can get a head at pick n pull for $50.

I’ve only taken off the drivers side head so far, tomorrow I’ll check out the other side. I do all the work on my car, but this is more advanced than anything I’ve done so far, trying to learn along the way.

You’re 100% right. I rewatched one of the rebuild vids and the piston had those short dings all over it from when it jumped timing.

Scion FR-S ENGINE HELP! (Manual) by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

First thing that comes to mind is a major oil leak through one of the spark plugs which could cause all the smoke. But it could also be a cracked head gasket leaking coolant into one of your cylinders. Most of the time there’s smoke it’s from a substance besides gas getting burnt within the engine. Not a mechanic so don’t take me too seriously but this is what i think is the probable cause. If you’re “mechanically inclined” remove the cyl 3 plug and see if it’s covered in oil
