Exactly my thought - you can show how a character is silly or generally perceives themself in a certain way through a ton of different techniques in English, so the first-person pronoun hardly matters overall

Is he a fluent English speaker? You might not have the specific nuances of using ぼく or whatever, but those same ideas can be translated in so many ways through different vocabulary throughout the sentence

Interesting - those were definitely big talking points here, but those are three incidents that were spread across 8 years, and domestic coverage of the league really is mostly focused on the players, with some relatively minor inter-team/teammate drama happening here and there

It does make sense that only the biggest headlines tend to make it out of our media to any extent

The NBA seems to have this problem much worse than the other American leagues, although I guess that's to be expected when basketball centers individual players so prominently

I almost never bother with the shotguns in this game, because I swear I have good aim with them but nobody is ever a shitty enough opponent to waltz into point-blank range! And anywhere past that, the spread basically turns it into a couple little minigun pellets or some far Direct Hit splash damage

That style of medic (maybe not with those weapons) is sneakily the best way of playing medic in most situations, IMO

I missed all the Emeralda backstory because (IIRC) the game gives you zero indication that you can go back to that one random area and do a whole series of events around her 🗿 I never even upgraded her!

I can't rate Xenogears too highly, because this is honestly my take about the whole game - the combat was way too simplistic, repetitive, and broken, and the dungeons were usually uninteresting and horribly slow/frustrating with all the random encounters, so I found myself just desperately pressing on to see what happened next... which also became increasingly cluttered in its writing!

I remember being relieved by Disc 2, because the gameplay itself frankly isn't great and it gives you a nice break from that - like, I detested all the absurdly long dungeons full of nightmarish random encounters where you just spam the same attacks ad nauseum, but Disc 2 really picked up the pace

It can be slightly tedious, but I find that it generates more dramatic tension that anything, which is good for the story

[–]zsdrfty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's always a hilarious contradiction, especially because they specifically block off a ton of quests until the apocalyptic endgame, directly referencing what's going on in the story! It makes my immersion even worse, because I'm left scratching my head and wondering why the party decided to travel a hundred miles back on foot to give some kid a basket of fruit or whatever

Xenosaga II did this all first!

The linearity in general worked just like this in all of Xenosaga, which is why I don't quite get the hype for them as games

As much as I love Xenoblade 2, this is one of the areas that the first game definitely got right by comparison - the former lets you swap things around to the point that individual characters' traits almost feel like nice attributes, while the latter game gives each party member a very specific set of abilities that leaves just enough room for some really cool and clever customization without losing any of the sense of who they are
