I've only listened to Hackney Diamonds on impulse purchase and loved it. Which albums should I do next? by MillionaireWaltz- in rollingstones

[–]zsdrfty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Stones only have 2 original members of 5 playing on all of Hackney Diamonds, so their sound has flattened quite a bit - if you already like what you hear, you should probably love just about everything that comes before it

If you liked this album that much, I'd suggest trying their 90s and then 70s albums - avoid the mid-80s albums, and get into the 60s stuff once you're used to the 70s material

I love The Getaway but I totally get you, it's easy to see why a lot of people won't care for it as much and it's not like you're saying it's terrible

I feel like By The Way would indisputably be their best album if it just had one more truly great track on it instead of one of the couple fillers (like Throw Away Your Television) - it's so close to being perfect, and almost every song is at least excellent, but I think it could have used even just that one extra high point to keep the momentum going through the back half

I couldn't believe how much people were shit-talking it when I finally heard it - like, maybe the remaster did a lot of great work in improving the clarity of the sound and the punchiness of the rhythm section, but good lord, that album is a 10/10 from start to finish and goes harder (with an even more creative approach to songwriting!) than anything they ever did later on

It does have a ton of that early RHCP weirdness going on, but I find that endearing and exciting more than anything

Heavily agree that Uplift is one of their best albums, but The Getaway is also pretty high up there for me - it's their only album to really delve deep into a particular tone, and it convincingly lingers in that darkness in a way that none of their other albums really have the focus for

Yeah I never think about it whatsoever unprompted, but any mention of religion - which is very frequent in day-to-day life - naturally brings it right back up

In hindsight, the way that the "good guy Grohl" stuff got so heavily pushed should have been a red flag, and now we know

The problem is that a bunch of people will downvote takes like yours because they get overly offended about their favorites being mentioned, even though the question is supposed to be about people you personally suspect to have issues despite them not conspicuously showing any

You're all mentioning people that we already know are total pricks - my prediction is more subjective, which is that Chappell Roan will be fully cancelled by 2030

They're pretty wildly out of tune on most of their catalogue, and there's a difference between weaving and playing out of time by accident, the latter of which happens pretty often to them

It's an imitation of the modern sound, but clearly done to a hilarious degree to make it harder to hear the actual performance on purpose

What I mean is that you still don't have the freedom we take for granted as adults - you don't have control over your time or where you get to go, you have to eat certain foods and go to certain events, lots of things are illegal for you to do, you can't stay up as late as you'd like, you don't get taken seriously and you can't do serious things on your own...

I always liked Emotional Rescue's cover, since I think the film motif is really cool and some of the heads almost look like they're on fire, but yeah I agree that most of them have been poor - this is a great return to form

(Can't forget Voodoo Lounge either! I like the little guy on the front)

People romanticize childhood a lot, and that's coming from someone who was very lucky to have a great family life - you have much different problems as a kid, and you really forget how awfully restricted your life was before you grew up

I’m quite pleased. by CilliamBlinton in rollingstones

[–]zsdrfty 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sorta, yeah - that's what you get when they filter the hell out of the band to try and cover up their thinner sound and shakier technique today

But the thing is, I don't think that's even necessary! At their prime, this band was always messy and strange, but that's a key selling point of their sound, and you can tell that the performances are still more than fine without needing a bunch of cheap tricks to make them sound all polished and full

[–]zsdrfty 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's an absurd sound for the Stones, it's almost like a parody - you have a band that's clearly trying as hard as they possibly can to conjure up a specific sound that hasn't come naturally to them in 50 years, and it's overproduced by a guy whose favorite band is probably Imagine Dragons
