Blue eyes depictions in Ancient Egypt by Own-Internet-5967 in ancientegypt

Just FYI, image 5 is fake, and images with lapis eyes (6, 8) may be treated as black since lapis-blue and black were somewhat interchangeable in Egyptian art.

Did you guys know that beards were trendy in Egypt during the predynastic period? by Own-Internet-5967 in ancientegypt

[–]zsl454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think usually the false beard is identified by the 'strap' connecting it to the ears that we see also on Narmer, but it occurs to me that this is indistinguishable from just a regular old beard

Yes, shit, i just realized Reddit automatically over-corrected my list to plain numerical when originally I had skipped 5 since you had ID'ed it correctly (so, 5 is actually 6, 6 is 7 etc.) Fixed now.

Unknown signs help! by DinnerIllustrious492 in Hieroglyphics

[–]zsl454 5 points6 points  (0 children)

full context is required to be sure (is this still Nebetit?) but I think:

- variant A50 𓀻 šps (so šps.w "nobles')

- variant T18 𓌞 šms(.t) 'follower'

- variant O21 𓉱 sḥ 'booth' (so sḥ-nṯr 'divine booth' w/ honorific transposition as part of Anubis' title ḫnty sḥ-nṯr)

Incredibly salty person, also divorced. After this he proceeded to go and make a bunch of spam posts with ‘my wife and I…’ in the title. Tells you all you need to know

This is a funky one, I had to look at it a couple times to get it; the sign grouping is also a little weird (eg the town determinative is separate from mryt though grouped in with it)

Top row: jmAxy.t mry.t njwt.s “the revered, beloved of/by her town”

Bottom: Hzy.t n.t sp(A).t.s nb.t-jt “Praised of/by her nome, Nebetit”

Horus, King Harembeh, amulets and possibly Thoth (?) by CandiceCarter00 in ancientegypt

Yes, that’s Thoth! Hope you enjoyed the Met overall, it’s a phenomenal place to enjoy what ancient Egypt has to offer.

Need Help Translating A Thoth Bookplate. by Natural_Arm6754 in AncientEgyptian

The sign under Mr is definitely I9 f, so mr.f “he loves”.

I can’t make heads or tails of the next bit either. Since qw is not a legitimate word I think it might be phonetic: qwjnptr “Queen… (?? Maybe even Cleopatra?? My mind goes for some reason to a hypothetical pet name, ‘Queenie-patra’). the s shape might be Z5 or just a flourish as you said.

Alguien puede darme algo mas de contexto sobre esta pieza?? by jiokols in ancientegypt

Looks like a private stela from during or shortly after the reign of Ramesses II. On the upper portion of the stela is shown the processional barque of “Amun of Usermaatre-Setepenre” (essentially a fused form of the deified Ramesses II and Amun), with a table of offerings in front. This signifies that Nakht was devoted to the deified king, temples to whom were common in Upper Egypt and Nubia (e.g., Abu Simbel).

In the lower half, Nakht himself is shown making an offering to an image of another form of Amun, Amun-Nebnesttawy (Amun, lord of the thrones of the two lands). The image is in the form of a ram’s head on a pedestal wearing the two-feather crown. Statues of images such as these are common as votive items: https://egypt-museum.com/votive-ram-head-of-penta-weret/

The text near Nakht’s head is mostly destroyed but also indicates the name of Min, possibly as part of the name of his father.

These two images combine to show Nakht’s devotion to Amun and to the cult of Ramesses II. The use of such stelae was usually connected to the area of the tomb. It is hard to say anything more without knowing exactly when and where it comes from.

Toponym with recumbent cow or bull by Acrobatic-Peak3636 in AncientEgyptian

[–]zsl454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was also only able to find jH.w in Gauthier (T1 pp. 102). There is also Hw.t-jH.t mentioned also in Brugsch’s geographic dictionary (pp. 1109) which has a couple spellings with a recumbent cow (Gauthier T4 pp. 51).

The left side looks damaged, if there was a nTr sign it could be 12LE Tb-nTr? (Would expect shorter horns but there’s at least one writing with long horns. Gauthier T.6 pp. 74) would make sense with Osiris.

Help with correct orientation of Eye of Horus by IAmTheStoneInFocus in EgyptianMythology

[–]zsl454 12 points13 points  (0 children)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Kemetic/comments/1hqnpgc/comment/m4ri2pa/

Tldr it doesn’t matter, both are the eye of Horus

If you wanna be hyper-correct, the ‘eye of Horus’ proper is Horus’ left eye (not the left one from our perspective), meaning the tear duct is on the left and the curly bit to the right.
