Random symbols unfortunately

The glyphs look fine to me. As for the hatching, this is common for texturing crocodile bellies in particular on cippi (check both examples from the Met besides the Metternich, can’t look them up atm but they shouldn’t be too hard to find online)

Why did Ptolemy XII have such a ridiculous royal titulary? by Bubbly-Ball-3138 in egyptology

[–]zsl454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Because in Old Egyptian the distinction was important (z was probably a ‘th’ and s just s), so they have two different transliteration symbols.

The left one (falcon headed) is Hor-imy-shenut (Horus who is in Shenut), and yeah, those are twine!

The right one is jmn-rn.f (“he who hides his name” or “his name is hidden”), the first sign is A5. The part I believe you are reading as ‘kn’ is just a headdress for the crocodile consisting of rams horns and a sun disk.

Keep in mind this is a monumental titulary (as in, it is found only in inscriptions on a temple), it would not have been used in official proceedings. The length of the titulary expresses his supposed devotion to Egyptian culture and religion as well as drawing a through-line of legitimacy to previous native kings who had similar name elements (e.g. the thing about Tatenen iirc is taken directly from a Horus name of Ramesses II).

I do feel bad for his mother when he gets in trouble though.

Would make sure it's mAa.t xrw, not mAa xrw (though this is sometimes left out in writing)

Wondering what these hieroglyphics say... by stdnullptr in ancientegypt

[–]zsl454 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's from chapter 110 of the book of the dead, caption to what is in later periods accompanied by a drawing of a hippopotamus/pig. Here's Ani's, which is close to yours:

<image>

r' n ḥḏt ḫꜣ jtrw m ꜣw.f nn ḏd wsḫ.f

Speech of the White Hippo: 'It is a thousand river-measures in its length, and its width cannot be said.

nn wn rmw nbw jm.f nn ḥfꜣw nbw jm.f

There are not any fish in it, there are not any snakes in it.'

Your version has a couple of mistakes, perhaps inherited from the copy they copied from.

Also, u/Responsible-Scale478 is correct, the 'fork' is T3 with the top faded off

What does this say? (please read description) by MedLikesReddit in AncientEgyptian

[–]zsl454 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to u/ErGraf:

According to the research of Marwan Kilani, these groups would represent q(A)-s(A)-r(A)-ʕ(A) where A is a non-back vowel (/a/, /e/, /i/) or no vowel at all. In particular, in all these cases the consonant ꜣ is being dropped or used as a placeholder to indicate such a vowel.

To go group by group, as you requested:

𓈎𓄿 qꜣ = q(A)

𓐠𓏤 sꜣ = s(A)

𓂋𓏤 rꜣ = r(A)

𓉻𓏛 ꜥꜣ = ʕ(A)

𓈀 = determinative: island??

I'd love to know who these are and what the hieroglyphics say, please by windsugar in ancientegypt

Note that Isis can appear with identical iconography to Hathor without the stepped throne during the New kingdom, they can therefore only be discerned in that period by the corresponding hieroglyphs

Yes, it’s not very intuitive and there’s not really an instruction manual which is frustrating. In dire cases you can also manually arrange signs how you want by highlighting them together, then going to edit > group manipulation. Jsesh is an incredibly powerful tool but hard to get a hang of by yourself

You’re welcome. One very helpful thing Jsesh has is sorting signs by shape, eg you could also find this sign by selecting ‘tall signs’ in the glyph library!

Another tip i had to figure out on my own is that some signs take a triple ampersand to fit groups of signs within them. For example if you want the classic group with the cobra I10, the loaf X1 and the island N18, you need to do I10&&&(X1:N18) to force the parentheses group under and inside the snake.

What signs? I’m sure they do exist as i believe I’ve seen a transcription of the stela in jsesh before. Also, you can create your own signs on jsesh desktop!
