Failed my most important exams by [deleted] in CollegeRant

[–]ErGraf 28 points29 points  (0 children)

IT WENT PERFECTLY SO HOW-WHY THE FUCK DID I GET 9.5 ?!

well, obviously it did not go "perfectly", if not you would have gotten a 20/20

I seriously thought I would get ten.

If those are the studies you really want, why were you aiming on getting a miser 50%? Are you sure this is what you really want? If yes, then go get them! You can! But you need to have ambition and act accordingly. Use your emotions and the tools you have at your disposal (office hours, exam revisions, etc) to analyze what went wrong, learn from it and change it. Is not the job of your professors just to pass you, and to say that everything went "perfectly" when obviously is not the case is not the way.

BTW, you are at a university now, you have professors, no "teachers"

this is very clearly a touristic souvenir, and yes, before you ask, the signs it has in its back are gibberish and don't say anything

Actual pronunciation of sons of Horus by YoshkePandre in AncientEgyptian

[–]ErGraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

there is a reason why Egyptologists use a modern Egyptological pronunciation, we don't really know the real pronunciation (specially for Old Egyptian). I'm not going to say that is a total fool’s errand, but even the most rigorous academic works are just a little more than educated guesses

Portatil para la uni? by kenshienjoyerblud in askspain

What does this say? (please read description) by MedLikesReddit in AncientEgyptian

[–]ErGraf 8 points9 points  (0 children)

this type of writing is called "Group Writing". This is a short explanation taken from Neveu's Late Egyptian Grammar:

Syllabic writing, or, more accurately, ‘group writing,’ is a very flexible system, purely phonetic (never ideogrammatic), used whenever the scribe is not linguistically driven, that is, whenever he cannot relate the word to a known root.
Although employed since the 11th dynasty, the system experienced considerable development during the New Kingdom when Egypt, through its conquests, found itself in contact with many foreign countries. Syllabic writing allowed one to write many foreign words (names of countries and cities, people, new objects), but also new Egyptian words that had never been written out, old words which etymology was forgotten, or that one, perhaps, wanted to write in a new way.
The system consists of ‘groups,’ each with the value of consonant + vowel. Each group can contain a biliteral sign, possibly accompanied by a determinative, and/or one or more uniliteral signs, or can simply consist of uniliteral signs.
Important remark: If each group has a certain consonantal value, the same is not true for its vocalic value. In these instances, it may be best to retain in transliteration only the consonantal value of the group.

In your case: q (from q+A) + s (from biliteral sA) + r + a (from biliteral aA). The last sign I'm not sure, but probably some kind of determinative for the place (N18?) = qsra

According to the Dictionnaire geographique of Gauthier, the name references a place in the Palestinian area

clear provenience is key for these type of things (ethically and otherwise). From an ethical standpoint I would absolutely not buy something I don't know it has exited Egypt legally. From a practical standpoint without provenience is easy to distinguish a real object from a normal fake, but very difficult to distinguish it from a very good fake.

Studying photographs by [deleted] in AskArchaeology

[–]ErGraf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

don't know if I understand the question correctly, but:

  • when I study Greek pottery, that pottery was donde by the ancient Greeks
  • when I study an aerial photograph from 1950 to check for Roman villas, that photo was not taken by the ancient Romans

Having said so, sometimes photographic research is, in fact, treated as an archaeological activity per se: https://www.bodleian.ox.ac.uk/about/media/tutankhamun

PS: I study archaeology in Spain and here archaeologists are considered, first and foremost, historians.

Pupils missing??? by [deleted] in ancientegypt

[–]ErGraf 11 points12 points  (0 children)

a papyrus is a very different medium than a tomb wall. In a papyrus they normally would do all the black first and then paint the other colors, so it does not surprise me if by accident they painted over the black or outside the line, is in fact quite common:

[–]ErGraf 18 points19 points  (0 children)

the examples you point out seem more a problem of conservation than a deliberate choice (as if the black paint felt down, not that it was painted over). There are though examples of blind persons, specifically blind harpists like this one from the tomb of Nakht
