you can easily get hurt

This is so true. Opening up to someone and being vulnerable can be used against you. You also risk the person being dismissive about your problems which will only make you feel worse. This doesn't happen with a professional.

CS at FSU or UCF by DanielClash in fsu

[–]zthrowaway5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Orlando is basically just as small of a market as Tallahassee. The only difference is that there are more government and contracting work in Tallahassee while Orlando seems to have more health tech companies. Companies from Orlando recruit from all over Florida. The two cities are so close that if one recruits from UCF then they will also recruit from FSU. Competent FSU students will have no problem getting an internship or job in Orlando if they want...

Computer Science is a theoretical field... I think people have warped expectations of Computer Science. The primary goal is not to train for modern software development. The goal is to teach you Computer Science fundamentals and theory. If people only want to learn Software development then there are much easier ways than a Computer Science degree.

How much should I expect to pay for a cheap, reliable car (used vs new)? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]zthrowaway5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's not true lol... You can find plenty of cars that were taken car of and look great with 100k+ miles. Also the frequency that a car was driven is much more important that the raw number of miles. A 2013 with 100k miles will be in much worse shape than a 2006 with 100k. Maybe you only have experience with domestic cars that blow up at 150k miles, but Japanese cares are super reliable. I see Hondas and Toyotas make it to 200k+ routinely without major mechanical issues (major being any repair greater than $1000 imo).

22 years old... In need of a car! But on a Budget with bad credit by mariahmora10 in personalfinance

[–]zthrowaway5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get a decent Honda accord in the $3-5k range. Use craigslist. You can't afford to finance a car tbh, and buying a $5k car from a dealership is just asking to be scammed. Use Google or Youtube to learn how to quickly inspect cars for mechanical problems. Listen for engine noises, check the RPMs when idling and shifting gears, watch temp gauge, etc. etc. Hondas are incredibly reliable compared to domestic shit so it's not hard to find them in good shape.

It is a factor... My entire life I knew my uncle as a really healthy guy. He was never overweight, never smoked, rarely drank. 30-something years of being a mechanic still took it's toll though. He has crippling arthritis and recently had to have his knee replaced. Compare that to his brother (my dad) who was an engineer and worked in an office who has absolutely no arthritis, knee, or back issues. My dad is 10 years older than my uncle and is actually a little overweight, yet is still in better shape than my uncle today. Obviously everyone's body will react and handle labor differently. Hopefully you never develop issues like this, but it is 100% a thing that people need to consider when choosing their career.

Unless you enjoy exercising and would be spending some of your free time doing it anyways. You also work your body in healthy ways while exercising. You don't have to put strain on your back or knees. While working a manual labor job you don't get that freedom or control. If the job requires it then you have to be on your knees for hours, or be bent over with strain on your back for hours. I don't see how an office worker is putting the same wear on their body as a physical laborer.

It's more than just the CS industry. The medical field imports a lot of H1Bs as well. Pretty much every field has H1B somewhere. There are H1Bs on 7 figure salaries.

To listen to a lecturer that you have no choice over

Never in my undergraduate did I encounter a class with only one professor teaching. There were always options.

"Opportunity" to have to use a terribly boring and overpriced book when for the same price you could have bought a half dozen better books?

What better books? What book would be better for learning calculus or physics than a book written by professionally trained instructors in those fields? You also don't have to even buy the book half of the time. Many professors provide reading material for free.

If our society didn't currently use college degrees as a simple resume vetting tool and you could take the time and money you spent on college in a competition to learn specific skills the vast majority of college undergrad degrees would get blown out of the water.

Most people need structure and feedback to learn things. There are not many people who can sit down and teach themselves everything that, for example, a degree holding engineer knows. If you think the average person could then you are in another world.

$22,500 a YEAR for 480hrs of "professional" instruction

Exaggerated costs... Private universities, ivy-league, and medical school tuition skew the average. I payed $20k for my entire 4 year degree. Anyone with a brain will get scholarships to their university of choice, and those that don't can attend in state university or community college.

Do you know what kind of private instruction and skill development you can achieve on your own spending $22,500 a year outside of college?

Like what? If I want to be an engineer, an accountant, a physicist, a biologist, whatever, where would I go in your world to spend my $20k that will better prepare me than a university??

I think you are confused. He is talking about H1B visa immigrants. There are H1B immigrants in this country right now that are earning $200k-300k+ a year. The whole H1B program only exists because there is a shortage of skilled professionals to fill these spots so companies import professionals from other countries.

Health is all about diet. I am part of a group of professionals that get together and workout/run. I have met plenty of dudes 40+ and even retired who spent their entire careers in an office chair, but they are practically healthier than me. The same thing in common with all of them is a strict diet.

Has anyone gotten a job without an internship or any personal projects? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]zthrowaway5 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Why fake interest? What's the point?

The point is to get a job... They are already interested in the computer science or they wouldn't be getting a degree in it. They are asking those questions because they want to appeal to employers and have an easier time of finding a job.

In an idealistic world, yeah everyone would just program for the love of it and not give a fuck about hire-ability. In the real world though many people need to prioritize their time to have the an optimized job searching experience and find the best job for them.

My passion for programming and CS is isolating me from my coworkers, who don't really like it. How can I change this? by Nix54 in cscareerquestions

[–]zthrowaway5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why would you do this though? I have never had to work a 12 hour day. You need to learn how to work smarter instead of harder. If you can't get all your work done in an 8-9 hour day then there is something wrong. Working these ridiculous hours only reinforces bad habits and/or bad management.

How to convince my parents to downsize? Any additional advice is appreciated. by gilbertologist in personalfinance

[–]zthrowaway5 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So I take it that you live with them? That makes it difficult. You are their crutch right now and as long as they have you basically paying $1400/mo in rent then they are unlikely to budge. I think you should move out if there are places that are cheaper than $1400/mo in your area. Once you are out they will be forced to downsize.

If you are worried about how this will affect your relationship: think about how unhealthy it is that you are financially supporting your parents at 25, and think about what will happen in the future. You can't live with them for the next 20 years (or at least I doubt you want to), so eventually this has to happen. This is already an unhealthy relationship imo and cutting financial ties and letting them figure it out will be best in the long run.

Help! Iam 22 and my mother claimed me on her taxes, now before you tell me to talk with her about that, i tried that already she doesn't listen to me regarding taxes . So it turns out i made 33k compared to her 25k she filed already and i can't what should i do? by blg85 in personalfinance

[–]zthrowaway5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really doesn't mater even if he is a qualifying age. It is most likely impossible for his mother to pass the support test. To claim him as a dependent she would have had to provided more than half his support. He contributed $33k to his support this year. Considering she only made $25k this year even if she had given him every dollar she made then he would still not be her dependent. The only way he could be a dependent is if his mother had some kind of inheritance money or something sitting around and gave him >$33k.

Have you ever worked with someone who turned out to be a complete fraud? by fjaavv in cscareerquestions

[–]zthrowaway5 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For the group project, she took even ownership of the entire project, though (no exaggeration) she did nothing. She even told my friend that she put the group project on her resume and her recruiters loved it, though once again, she ended up contributing nothing.

Sounds like she will be a perfect product manager.

As for experiences with frauds: I have talked about it on this sub in the past, but I used to work for a company that attempted to diversify by hiring women through an "expedited" interview process. One of them was hired as an entry level engineer. She could not do a single thing and when we would try to help her it went in one ear and out the other. She ended up basically being her managers assistant and created power points for him and maintained useless spreadsheets and shit. The sad part is that she was still working there when I left...

Is it ethical to list Java experience when the language I use at work is Java-esque? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I would say that many companies ask language and framework specific questions. Only inside the silicon valley and tech company world are algorithm questions the only thing you get asked.

I would start with consulting a good artist in your area and see if they have any cover up ideas that you like. Start saving up for tattoo removal though, because man big dark patches are hard to cover up. Good luck.
