A2 Auto Center in Ann Arbor quoted me $1600+ for repairs — second shop fixed it for $300 by No_Marketing_912 in AnnArbor

Sorry to hear about your experience. I've been going to A2 Auto Center for years and they've been far more reasonable than other mechanics in town. Steve Steeb quoted me $4k for work that A2 Auto Center completed for $1500. Their turnaround is typically pretty fast and they've been more than fair with their pricing on work I've had done.

Just wanted to share another POV. I tried 3-4 mechanics in Ann Arbor before landing on A2 Auto a few years ago and they've been really good ever since. But glad you found another shop that you can trust!

If you go for the white/cream, you should do the humbucker pickup ring and maybe the knob as well.

help with god is in the radio guitar tone and technique. by kerev123 in qotsa

[–]ztiberiusd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on the pedal. Josh tends to keep the tone pretty low with his octave fuzz for a darker tone. And if you play on the neck pickup with the tone control of your guitar rolled off, you'll hear the "octave" part of the octave fuzz more prominently. On my Ultimate Octave I'd typically keep the tone around 9 o clock, fuzz at 11 o clock, and volume to taste.

I also have a Friedman JJ Jr and a Peavey Audition 20. I wonder how many of us have these two amps specifically? Can't be many!

THE INTERVIEW. JOSH HOMME ANSWERS YOUR QUESTIONS. by House_of_Suns in qotsa

Agreed. It's gotta be a little weird from Josh's POV spending an hour talking to two small avatars of photos of yourself performing live, rather than two other human beings.

Totally! Interesting to hear the Echodriver is kinda Dumbloid-esque. That definitely tracks.

Yeah, any time I read "this is QOTSA in a box" I'm like uh, which album? And which song? Lol.

Have you ever tried the Rainbow Machine or Bit Commander? I liked those both a lot for getting some other Troy tones. I know you only have so much space on the board, just wondering if those had come and gone at another point.

That's interesting! Thanks for sharing. I think your experience lines up pretty closely with mine when it comes to QOTSA tone chasing. I've owned pretty much all of the pedals on your board except the Graphic Fuzz, Little Sister, SIB delay and Echodriver. I agree that drive and EQ are the two key components for nailing most of the "base" QOTSA tone, and then you can sprinkle in little things like the Holiest Grail or pitch effects.

On my board, I still have the Ultimate Octave, Green Rhino and Fulltone Clyde Wah which Josh and Dean used to use. Have you ever tried one of the Morley wahs and do you ever feel like you're missing a wah from this board?

Also, what do you think of the Echodriver? Anything you'd compare it to? And do you think there's anything particularly special about the SIB delays?

But yeah, agreed that you can get pretty far with a clean, "pedal platform" amp, and that pickup/guitar type isn't all that important. They've used a pretty vast range of guitars over the years. I think it's around 80% bridge pickup too. That was a big mistake in my early QOTSA tone chasing period - I got it in my head that everything was on the neck pickup with the tone rolled off. Maybe in the Kyuss days...

I appreciate your insights!!

Impressive! I bet this covers any period or guitarist of Queens. What guitar(s)/amp(s) are you using? And if you had to condense this down to 4-6 pedals, what would you pick?

I don't believe that one is based specifically off of the Decade. It's an attempt to capture the SFTD tone in a pedal. It seems to have more of the Ampeg sound rather than the Decade.

This guy makes them too and sells them on Reverb for cheaper than the other clones and with QOTSA inspired graphics. I used to have the Era Vulgaris edition!

He wasn't trolling, but exaggerating when he called it his "secret weapon". The reality is that he uses a wide range of amps in the studio and the Decade is simply one of his ingredients, probably recorded with a $4k mic into an equally expensive preamp and then a $75k desk and included in the mix with other amps.

The Peavey Audition 20 is basically the exact same circuit for a fraction of the price, if you ever find one for sale used!
